Morrissey wants the listener to relate, that's why his lyrics are ambiguous when it comes to gender and sexual orientation. Also Morrissey genuinely did not know his sexual orientation, he was celibate and on top of that he didn't like sexual orientation to be labeled. Journalists back in the time of the smiths were obsessed with his sexuality, I think people now are picking up on thst and mistaking this preoccupation with fact. You are absolutely dead on about Morrissey wanting the listener to go find out more ... this discovery for me as a teen was so exciting and it lead me to discover more bands and literature...for an artist to have a strong influence on a teenager, enough to make them read books shows how clever and inspiring he is. Please do "I Know It's Over" thanks for the vid.
Listen to the headmaster ritual, and to that joke isn't funny anymore, i believe you'll like it... The smiths fans are very passionate about the band , i could marry a girl from the rival football club or super religious but i would never marry a girl who doesn't like the smiths, total deal breaker xD
You could ask 50 smiths fans what they think the lyrics means and 50 could have a different answer to each other, surely it’s what you take from the lyrics that is the most important thing? I have my own interpretation of smith songs but nice to hear someone else’s take on it. P.s could you do well I wonder?
Thanks for digging so deep into the song, Morrissey's lyrics are always ambiguous and subject to interpretation. Sometimes I think he's in denial but whatever. Over the past year I've gotten fixated on their music after being a casual fan for a few decade or so. Smiths songs I'd like to see you react to: 'Ask' which I think is their catchiest single. 'Girlfriend in a Coma' which is their funniest. 'Asleep' is their most devastating song.
Whoever is telling you you are wrong about The Smiths lyrics, they are, well, wrong. Morrissey's lyrics are very ambiguous and open to interpretation, so yours might be as valid as anyone else's. Most of the times he made no reference to gender, though by not mentioning it, it kind of became the elephant in the room (that's what made the connection with me), a bit like Brick's homosexuality in the movie version of A cat on a hot tin roof, and I think someone as clever as Morrissey did that on purpose, but I don't know how his lyrics couldn't be as equally relevant for a shy straight girl as they were for me.
I thought you might enjoy this, someone needs to give you an up-tempo list. You've stuck with it and sometimes that isn't easy with the fanbase, so props
try The Stranglers - Walk on by OR No more heroes The Tragically Hip - New Orleans is sinking Stereolab - Baby Lulu Weekend - Drum beat for baby Japan - Swing The Undertones - My perfect cousin The Cure - A Forest Bauhaus - Bela Lagosi's Dead Gordon Downie - Canada Geese The Dickies - Stuck in a pagoda, with Tricia Toyota PIL - Public Image The Pixies - Gouge Away
The sound of their first edition of the first album is actually horrible. Gives unlife to the drowsiness in some of the slower songs, however. I heard some of their singles first and bought "Hatful of Hollow" in november -84. Some show on swedish radio had already played "Still ill" a couple of times, and God, it has stuck with me. I was 17 and there wasn't any other band like The Smiths around back then. Political, sexual and controversial. Morrissey was on the covers of the music press and tabloids all of the time. I really love "Still ill" 'cos it carries all of the content that made them unique. Joyce/Rourke became a driven rythm section almost from the beginning. Marr/Morrissey is one of the best song writing duos ever. Love your reactions.
There is two ways of seeing this song : political- social- which means what the country gives for you to live. Also critic in hier our way of life is decaying we cant live like before. All of remains to us is just work so we cant live dreams anymore. The other way to see this song is looking the romance describe on it. there is no line between what is said about this romance and the political view. About romance: an abusive one , he acuses the person like someone that just take and not give. A romantic start like kiss and up with a fight that hurts his lips and maybe more so he felt later like dying from this enjuries. This moment of dream is over. I had myself lived that perfect romantic start and endet up with me on floor being punshed on face. There are some pains and some felling of willness that never goes away after that . Still life goes on not for all is just bright side acctualy most of us agressor or agressed have to work hard to get what what we need.
Classic punchy Johnny. Visit Manchester and see the 'iron bridge' for yourself. Just along the street from the Morrissey family home. Prefer the lyric "England's a swine". As a Scotsman I would say that!
Fantastic! I love seeing anyone hear them for the first time. Please do more!
Another one of my faves by The Smiths. There are so many to choose from ☺️
This is my favorite smiths track so I got v excited to see your upload
Glad I could come through for you!
I've been loving these Smiths/Moz videos, keep it up!
Glad you like them!
I am a fan of Smiths and I really like your analysis. Don't be so hard and demanding on yourself or pay so much attention to what others say.
track number two from this album: You've Got Everything Now
always loved that one
You should react to Handsome Devil. One of their best songs.
I really think you have very good insights into lyrical content so don't take negative comments too seriously
Thank you kindly!

Good call on these three - probably in my top 5 of Smiths songs!

Thanks for that feedback! Much appreciated on that insight!
I think it's about Thatcherism.

Funny thing is this is their weakest album
