      @@gabrielonate2506 It all started when I applied at a local apprenticeship and I went in as a laborer apprentice. I worked for a little more than 3 years, became a journeyman and then did some other type of work. I went back to the apprenticeship and applied for Operator. And now I’m an apprentice again but as an operator this time.

      @Diesel and Iron true, but In my personal experience it's way worse at non-union. It's much more frustrating when the boss gives himself a raise of millions, but denies you a dollar an hour raise and berates you for being "ungrateful" and "lazy" even though you're the reason he can afford that supercar. With unions you still have corruption, but at least you the worker have protection from most unfair practices, good benefits, and a bit more of a say in your future. Is it perfect, absolutely it isn't, but it beats the alternative.

    As an owner operator, I charge $100/hr rolling my skid steer. But it costs me $50/hr when adding machine ammotorization (5000 hour useful life of engine) + fuel + tracks + oil + filter + maintenance. Also got to factor in truck and trailer hauling. When I am rolling up into someones driveway with a $70k truck, $70k skid steers, $20k trailer + attachments = lots of money invested.

      Most people outside the industry (and sadly, even some IN the industry) don't understand why mobilization fees exist and why hiring someone to do dirt work isn't just a flat $60/hr. There is a lot of upfront cost for the gear, let alone the maintenance plus the fuel just to get the equipment to the job.

    • @KarasCyborg
      @KarasCyborg Рік тому

      @@DieselandIron Agreed. To top it off, to get a 'tech there' to fix something on your machine in the field, it's going to cost $150+ hour plus transport of their truck to and from and hopefully they got the parts on the truck. And those mobile techs have to pay the equipment makers thousands of dollars a year to be able to call the factory and call one of the factory techs to help them isolate a problem. One pack rat in a machine can do untold damage chewing wires or dragging in kindling / dryer lint bedding to start and engine fire. There's also equipment insurance to stack on top of costs. When people look at how much it costs to rent a skid steer : $400/day for up to 4 hours. Plus sizable deposit $4000+ Plus insurance. Plus taxes. Plus They have to clean/grease/fuel machine and pay to have it brought out to them and take it back. It's a bargain to pay someone else to deal with all that headache.

    Apparently my geographical location is labor HELL! Top rate where I dig graves and operate backhoe, skid steer , dump truck and large commercial mowers is stuck at less than $15 hourly. Seems pretty uniform for all the cemeteries around the area. I’ve seven years here, and I’m the foreman. We can’t get people even to do weed eater work around ground markers and monuments anymore. Literally everyone needs a starting wage which will never be offered. Of course I’m worth much more, but where does that money even come from?

    That is a bunch of bull about being stuck at a pay rate with unions, unions have a set set pay for the particular equipment. And if you become a member in the IUOE, you will be trained on any equipment you would like to learn. Not to mention the health care and other benefits.
    JOIN THE UNION IF YOU CAN!
    I have made a great living being a union member. I have a pension and an annuity fund, and a supplemental unemployment fund. The hell with non - unions. This is the time to take charge!

      You can absolutely have a great career with the union and there are a lot of benefits. Getting paid over scale is entirely up to your employer though. They are only required to pay scale so bonuses aren't as common as on the non union side. There are some benefits to both sides of the equation on this one.

    What you earn hourly depends on experience and most of all location. I seen a comment saying "In Canada starting wage is $25 an hour". Well I live in Atlantic Canada (right beside Maine), many experienced operators are not getting $25 an hour. Same goes for the ones driving dump trucks around here, many of them (experienced) make around $15 an hour, I know a fella that retired last year at the age of 80 after decades of floating heavy equipment for a local construction company and he was making $19.50 an hour.

If that’s a financial option would you take it starting over? I hear sometimes that these programs can be more on the scamming side if they say they can “help get you a job in the industry”.

      The first thing I would recommend is watching this video: ua-cam.com/video/maIDknW4DME/v-deo.html
      I actually cover that topic and talk about the pro's and con's. The condensed version is I wouldn't recommend any sort of "heavy equipment school" simply because almost everyone in the industry assumes you will have to be retrained from ground zero if you've been to one of those schools. They teach you how to move levers but they don't teach you how to truly operate a machine in real world conditions.
      Another reason I don't recommend that route is because it will never make sense to me to pay for an education when you can get paid to learn on the job. The training schools don't accelerate your career start so you might as well get a job at a company and get paid to be taught. As long as you are a dedicated, teachable individual, most companies in the industry have no issue bringing you on and teaching. I would highly recommend you call some small to medium sized companies in your area and let them know the situation. Be honest about your lack of experience and tell them you are willing to start at the bottom and learn. Business owners respect honesty. Where you get into trouble is by lying about your experience or overstating your capabilities.

      Hi I live in Washington state. If you join any trade union as a apprentice you start around 25 to 30 a hour and max out at 50-60 a hour after 4 years. I have 30 years in iuoe. I have about starved to death a couple of times but over all I made a good living. I personally make 90 to 100 in 10 month’s

    In texas at ranger Excavating, i started at $12 to operate a roller and be a good labor hand. After 2 years with no raise but working hard and learning several machines, i left and went to a company where i worked less and made $15 an hour. The company didnt have their shizz together so now im a loader hand getting paid $19/hr with great benefits when im done with my first few months here. I think the key thing in the non union states is to learn as much as you can and always look for better companies until you find a place you can settle down at. Thats pretty much what ive noticed all the operators who are worth something do cause they actually can since theyre worth the money.

    Love your videos, but you are not even close on Union wages. Local 18 is about 41 per hour before fringe. Total package is approximately 90 per hour.
    Pipeline is alot more, 47 an hour, plus 75 per day for truck pay (not taxable income) . One can easily make 250k a year running Class A equipment on the pipeline.
    As far as the IUOE Apprenticeship, its a 4 year program, and you start off at 50% of scale, +10% if you operate equipment.
    You get a 10% raise every year, assuming you have met the requirements. 1st year apprentices must complete, Signal Person, 24 Hour Skid Steer, 8 hour forklift class before completing the practicals for certification on Industrial and Rough Terrain forklift.
    In addition, you must have obtains a CDL A or B, have 1000 On the job training hours, 160 hours of block traing, and 1 level 3 dirt upgrade.....meaning you can operate that piece of equipment at an average journeymen level....... that is just the first year.

      As long as you had a company that took care of you then you weren't missing much. The union typically pays higher than non union but that's not a hard and fast rule. So only half way through this video I can’t stress how inaccurate it is first of all iuoe apprenticeships are only four years.a journeyman scale varies depending on the local and there contracts but in the south 406 our scale is $32 and most jobs pay more .I made $39.05 running a freaking puddle jumper.I can’t speak for non union companies but I was offered a cash job by a local plumbing company.$200 per 8 hour shift and a company truck and trailer to haul machine from job to job.again a puddle jumper..so now I’ll watch the rest

      @DieselandIron  Рік тому +1

      I couldn't remember how long the apprenticeship was so you got me there. That being said, wages vary wildly depending on where you are in the country. im not sure if anyone will read this as its a 4 year old video. Ive been running equipment since I graduated Highschool. I started doing overhead crane operating in warehouses, running forklifts and driving Semi trucks around the yard ( no streets not licensed ), then i got into labour positions in small companies where I learned how to run skid steers, and small excavators and other equipment and hand tools. From this video I think I should proceed straight to a union and find a journeyman apprenticeship? I have the experience and basic knowledge but have no clue where to get into one.

      Yes, your best bet is to take your experience and get into the union. Depending on your abilities and how bad the union wants the dues, you might be able to skip the apprenticeship. Try hiring in with a union company and then calling the union rep when you get hired. They might just give you a temp journeyman card while they try you out.

      They can, doesn't mean they do. Anyone can pay above scale but, a lot of companies will only pay scale wages.

      Once you go over 40 hours you start making time and a half. Most operators have their 40 hours in by Wednesday night, so the other half of the week is all time and half. That's where I made all my money when I was operating full time.

    I think you covered everything in a realistic way. I started in construction several years ago with no experience at $13 an hour, i was let go after 1 month. I went to a small company and learned to oprate equipment and was hired as a foreman and operator for $20 an hour at a bigger company. I'm in north Florida.

    Any advice on someone from Florida wanting to get into a union? Always wanted to move and get into union and I have light experience with running backhoes and skidsteers as a kid. Wondering if any states allow for moving and getting into a union? Or help with relocating etc.

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  4 роки тому +2

      I don't think you're going to have any luck with someone helping to relocate unfortunately. You might get online to the IUOE website and see what your local is. That would be a start if you wanted to stay in the Florida area. If you're looking to relocate, Most states in the northern part of the us will have unions and we'll have a stronger Union presents than those in the south. I know for a fact that Michigan not only has a very strong union but is also super hungry for skilled trades
