ABOUT the song:
"Big Spender" is a song written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields for the musical Sweet Charity. It is sung, in the musical, by the dance hostess "girls"; it was choreographed by Bob Fosse for the Broadway musical and the film. It is "set to the beat of a striptease" as the girls "taunt" the customers.
A hit version of the song by Shirley Bassey reached #21 in the UK Singles Chart in December 1967. This version featured in the 2004 film The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, and in the 2005 film Nynne. The song has become one of Bassey's signature songs. She has performed the song numerous times, most notably for the 80th birthday of Prince Philip. She also sang it at the 2007 Glastonbury Festival. The song was also featured on Shirley's recent, 'Get The Party Started' CD.

WOW. I've never seen someone of that era to dance so freely and kinda silly and have so much fun on stage!!!

Artists should have fun at work, so its not silly. When you sing playback or need technical amplification that is really silly, i mean!, Which can also compensate for wrong tones with appropriate microphones ... Bassey was vocal powerful in her best times and had a well-developed technique for big bands. Now, however, she is already older (84) and also has to do a bit of tricks so that her fans can still experience her live. Her technique changed, because her voice also changes in the course of life, she sings a bit too tightly today and you can also hear the air flowing out while singing, which is never good in any vocal area - I don't speak of breathy jazz " singers" who always need microphones, even at small sessions in front of a small audience. You have to have a certain vocal, anatomical requirement if you want to be a real singer! From a textual point of view, it's only the little things that make a difference from opera to all other vocal styles. A lot of nonsense is being taught, especially today ...
in 1990? this wasn't unusual! you'd already had the 60s-80s eras of hippie music, punk, hair metal, glamour rock, disco, etc. people were quite free

One thing to bear in mind is the difference between the pre-1985 Shirley Bassey versus the post-1985 one. 1985 was when her daughter died in circumstances that were never really explained -- she was convinced foul play had to have been involved -- and perhaps not surprisingly under the stress her voice just cracked. She retrained, painstakingly, with an operatic coach to save her career, and the post 1985 voice comes out much more deeply than the pre 1985 which is more in the back of the throat. Two very different, yet equally powerful voices -- at that point it goes from a pretty strongly pop style to more cabaret/opera. So bear that in mind when you check the date on a recording!

Written for the 1966 stage play "Sweet Charity". "Big Spender" was released as a single by Peggy Lee (In 1966?) who had a HUGE hit with the song. In 1969 the movie version of "Sweet Charity" starring Shirley MacLaine was released for which she won a Golden Globe.
Billy Mac: What a great memory you have! Peggy did have a Top 10 USA hit with this song back in 1966. Shirley also had a hit with this song in the UK in 1967, and she has been very faithful to it by including it in her concert line-up for 4+ decades. Now in her 80's, Shirley will probably not be performing it anymore, which is sad

Why does the video quality here look like it's from 1960? I was nearly 30 years old in 1990 when this was made and video quality was much, much better than this!
The video I have of this particular performance is pretty bad, and with color it made it even look worse. I thus had no choice but to be remove the color. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of anyone else who has a better quality version of this performance, and who is willing to share it with all of us. IF there was such a video, it would have been uploaded by now. Maybe someday, the show producers will upload a good version...
