    I can say from experience that Grease Pencil tool in Blender is already ground breaking enough to take a closer look. I haven't touched other softwares after that because it is so powerful once you learn it 🥰

    Blender is very versatile, like a Swiss army knife. But if your only ever chopping vegetables then maybe use the big kitchen knife. Though that Swiss army knife is pretty big and getting way bigger pretty quickly

      @hjf4a2 for the most part I agree, tho I think it does do sculpting and modeling really great. There may be more steps involved depending on what your doing, but its totally worth it for free. Some prefer the workflow as it's not worse necessary, but rather just different because of being more multi purpose

      @hjf4a2 Blender is perfectly fine on its own. It handles modeling, sculpting, and animation very well. Who has the money to pay $1700 a year for Maya, or $719 a year for Cinema 4D?

    I'm an avid Blender user, 10 years professionally, but these "Why not Blender", subtle insults like knife analogy, etc. comments are unfunny jokes. I hope they let pros like Olof use their choice of tools, especially ones they're invested in and become really adept with. Don't be like some knife-cult neophytes looking to convert every professional chefs they encounter.
    Besides, it's not the be-all end-all tool they'd have you believe, thousands like me write addons to work around its known limitations with countless tricks, some made a living selling addons to or hired by teams that tried to adopt it and hit barriers pretty fast, and that's not necessarily a feature...

      Agreed. I find blender to be a potentially capable software in the hands of a trained professional, but i find the blender community to be incredibly toxic and ignorant. They are very hostile to industry standards or anyone who does anything different which is really terrible since most everyone who does anything different actually does it better because those people are some of the best in the industry who paved the way for the features blender just copied. Its almost, an open hostility to growth or professional advancement.

      @@Ben-rz9cf Toxic blender community that is hostile to anyone who does anything different, open hostility to growth? lmao man, that is such an exaggeration. There are more people who diss on Blender without ever giving it a fair chance, they are the only ones resistant to growth.
      Sure, there might be newbies fiddling with a free toy, they might make ignorant comments about other software, but a true professional is always learning and looks to improve productivity. Some of the most popular Blender gurus always advocate learning to use a wide array of tools and to not be bound to software. Knowledge never goes to waste but I've seen many pros stop learning after a few years. I find majority Blender users just passionate about CG, always eager to try something new and the community itself is wholesome. Even the industry ensures they can't rely on Blender alone for jobs. So I got no clue where you get all that from.

      @@oakmin9047 "Sure, there might be newbies fiddling with a free toy..." isn't that like 90% of blender's community?
      Go to the blender reddit and say geometry nodes will never be as good as Houdini. I dare you =)
      (To be clear, I love blender, but the blender cult is real)

    • @oakmin9047
      @oakmin9047 3 роки тому +4

      @@H-L Maybe true about Reddit noobs tho, I never go there lol.
      I think the key word is "different", Blender isn't meant to replace anything, but provides many standard, widely used tools in its own framework. It can be very convenient for projects that don't need a specialist software like Zbrush, Houdini or Marvelous Designer.
      Blender nodes will provide something unique for the existing workflow, that's a certain. Like sculpting for Blender is really good in a space that is dominated by Zbrush. Blender has a few perks over Zbrush like multiple viewports, blocking scenes, different lighting setups, textures, rigging, renders etc So even if I'm a Zbrush user, I still practice on Blender, 'cause the workflow justifies the time I invest in it.

    I'm currently making an animation. Which I'll likely use as an animation reel. It'll likely go for 5-10 minutes, and will be black-white. Do you as a professional think it is a good idea to use it that way? Or is it too long?
    I'm drawing in more anime style, so I can make 1 second a day for now (12 frames) is there from your experience a "mediocre capability of making"?
    Big thanks if you will actually answer my questions. I'm 15 yet animation as a whole made my life so much better. I hope in future I'll get better to the levels of making an unimaginably creative and good looking animation

    • @OlofStorm
      @OlofStorm  3 роки тому +9

      I dont think there are any right or wrong ways to approach it if you feel you can make it in a certain way. I dont think a full animation equals a demo reel. The reel would most likely contain a collection of the work you have done from different projects to show your capabilities. Of course the full animation is a good thing in itself in the portfolio, but maybe only use your favourite parts of it in a reel.
      10 min of animation is ambitious. But you have to be the one to feel if its doable or not. We all work at different speeds.

  • @salarycat

    Yes I was also wondering on this. Blender seems to be the better package to do the kind of work you do, AND it's free, AND it's clean i.e. no data tracking / no accounts / no malware apps / no unnecessary clutter. I get it, it's a very big investment to switch, especially when it comes to 3d software, but in this case it does seem like a sensible course of action.

    • @jdotem
      @jdotem Рік тому +1

      It is anything but sensible to arbitrarily switch to another 3D tool that does the bare minimum of what c4d and other industry standard software can do just because you personally think it's better.

    • @salarycat
      @salarycat Рік тому

      @@jdotem As someone with 20+ years of Cinema 4D experience, I’d say my capacity of comparing the capabilities of each software is relevant. How do you back up your claim that my position is irrelevant, and that blender does “the bare minimum” of what c4d can do? Just compare grease pencil to doodle tool, and Eevee + real time compositor to Sketch & toon.

    • @jdotem
      @jdotem Рік тому

      @salarycat
      When it comes to motion graphics, which c4d is most well known for, in blender you have to fiddle with geometry nodes for hours when it would've taken minutes with mograph fields and effectors, that is the bare minimum. I've had similar conversations with motion designers with decades of experience who have differing opinions about switching to blender, however it doesn't make for a convincing argument either way because regardless of your experience it's still an anecdote. If this guy can already accomplish what blender does with the tools that he's taken years to master, what is the point of switching in the first place?

Now he doesn't see the need to change the software that he is already comfortable with. It is expensive. But he has been working for some time now So now its part of his work budget. The Greatest Commandment
    34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
    37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
