Fished it a few years back. Opening day and several days after. Bison grazed right next to me a few times. Geysers were in the foreground. Swung soft hackle the entire time. I caught a lot of fish. Great River.
Thanks Jeffrey! At times it felt a little dangerous as if you weren't paying attention you could easily fall into one of the deeper ones and never come out.
I made a trip to the henrys fork last fall and fished this river while i was in the area. you're definitely right, at least during the time i was fishing those fish were clubbing pupas on the swing
It has to be one of the most unique trout streams in the world, too bad it isn't know for having large fish. I agree with Alexei's comment that it is because of the emerging caddis that are prevalent in June there.
thanks for sharing, very cool footage and very unique with the hot springs. It looks like a perfect river for swing wet flies. It's awesome you were getting fish on the swing, too.
Sweet double hook up even though the other came off that’s amazing man, always love your videos thanks for making them. Very satisfying to watch when I can’t get out🙏🏼 hopefully one day I’ll be able to put the time in like you and exploration.
Thanks Hayden! What I loved most about that double hook up was that I was able to see the other fish take the second fly as I was fighting the first fish right in front of me.
Bro try a chubby size 10 or 12 with fluorocarbon tied on to the bend of the hook about 3 to 4 feet with euro jig fly. You catch a lot more fish and won't have to use split shot the euro nymph size 14 or 16
Agree! I will be fishing dry droppers more as the hatches start to heat up in Idaho/MT. I bought a few purple chubbys and foam hoppers for that reason. I didn't think of trying euro jig hooks but will do so, thanks for the tip.
Dope footage Purple Drake! What was the water temp at the Firehole? I tried to fish that as a straight newb in 2018 and the water as like 80 F in August. At least I got to wet wade on that volcanic rock. Also noticed a ton of caddis or stoneflies on your legs in one of the release footages.
Thanks Sung! I didn't take the water temp, but it felt relatively warm--I am guessing in the low 60s maybe mid 60s. I read that the river shuts down in July as the river gets too hot and a lot of the fish take refuge in the underwater springs or tributaries. There is only a short window to fish it in June and later in the fall. I think the Madison in the park is also like that. I saw a couple of Millers Caddis flying about (first time I have seen those, pretty cool to see an all white caddis) but I think the caddis that were on my waders and in which I saw a lot of along the bank were mainly spotted sedges and maybe a few mother's day caddis mixed in.

Enjoyable video. Fun that you can pull off the river and check out those scalding hot springs.

Loved the wild life and geology. Super pretty river. That is interesting that the fish prefer the swing there.

Fished the park several times in the 1990's but never the Firehole. What a unique setting
Agree, nowhere else like it!

Everything I read about the Firehole kept repeating it is great for wet flies--never seen a river described like that.
yup... this is the start of the poem. I took it in the valley down. Treasure-trout. I believe it was forrest fenn?

Sweet video man, was up there with ya, crowds were insane !
Thanks WSO! Probably the most heavily fished river in Yellowstone despite only being fishable for half the season.
I have moved! Fishing With Drake is the new channel 🍻
Got the old channel back--will be posting videos here again!

I seen for the most part you can’t walk around a lot it
Yes, you have to be careful of all the hot pools (very dangerous) and bison!
I’m sorry
You can’t tell where you are or what you’re doing. I know you’re in the fire hole but all I saw was dirt and sink holes. Pitiful video
