Why Springfield Armory Discontinued the XD-E

  • Last month, Springfield Armory discontinued the XD-E -- just three and a half years after its release. As the only small single stack 9mm on the market that's DA/SA, it filled an important niche. So why did it fail? We don't know for sure, but we've got some pretty good guesses.

As a DaSa hammer fired shooter, it breaks my heart to hear Springfield discontinued the xde. We don’t need more plastic striker guns! I think that was their only DASA handgun too.

Sorry to hear it’s being discontinued.. As soon as the XDE came in a 45 acp, I bought one. Couldn’t be happier with it.. It shoots like a dream.. will devour any 45’s you put through it.. It has great sights, conceals well. For a hammer fired handgun, Springfield did a nice job! Can’t compare to any other striker fired guns out there.. This XDE stands alone very well. Too bad more people did not go out and shoot this gun. Gun manufacturers can’t please everyone.. Thanks for the video👍

The really sad thing about this is these were very easy to rack for those with arthritis or low hand strength. Before the Shield EZ came along this was the only option that was easy to rack that wasn't a SA 1911-style .380. The 9mm was SO smooth too!! Anyone still selling leftover stock online? I remember seeing 9mm XDE's for $350 and $399 a lot in the months before Rona kicked off.

Let me say I have owned one as my EDC for several years and put many shots down range without a single issue. My wife loves it as well. It’s been a great gun. Sorry to hear they are discontinuing it. I better load up on a few additional magazines. I can see why they discontinued it though just by the 300+ comments so far on this thread. It would require a locking system, and the Walther p38 locking system takes too much room to do properly in a thin slide. It could be possible to squeeze it in there, but they might have to expose the locking lugs, and that's asking for major problems. If they did a tilting barrel system, it wouldn't be a cheetah. Dasa usually soaks up quite a bit of room in the hammer mechanism, so getting a true micro compact dasa is very difficult to get done right. The xde is the same size as a g19, and therefore is a compact handgun. Which goes to show how hard it is to squeeze all of these features we want in something so small.

Went today on the hunt for a medium to compact 9mm da/sa semi-automatic pistol. My list included Beretta Storm compact, Cz p07 and a few other cheaper Turk or Taurus models. First 2 places had nothing I needed. I strolled onto Bass Pro later on and the XDE was there like an orphan or dog at the pound! Needless to say I adopted. Yes, was the demo model none in storage. Funny I bought primarily, yes odd primarily to use with my laser ELMS targeting system to eliminate the bang rack that plagues the trainer with striker fire pistols. Which I have quite a few. I do intend to cycle this as my carry gun as well. It wasn’t terribly expensive $529. Agreed could do without the safety but for my primary and occasional secondary purposes it’s gonna do A Okay! I totally disagree with your comments about the safety.. being able to load/unload the chamber with the safety engaged is a nice feature. I also own a Sig P320 X Compact with Romeo One Pro Optics but recently I've been reluctant to carry it because of recent reports of unintended discharge. Lately I've been carrying my S&W M&P 2.0 in 10mm 4.6 inch with manual safety... had no failures to feed with hot defense or range ammo... I have to say, 15+1 of 10mm in a full size gun that's still light enough to carry all day, and I don't feel like I'm compromising anything. It's too bad about the XDE though.. really love mine.

I rented one of these as I was really interested in it. I found the added height of the slide made it awkward and perceived muzzle flip was higher than I was expecting. I didn’t see any real benefit over other compact 9mm pistols even though it was DA/SA. So I think your analysis is correct. While not DA/SA, I am very curious how the S&W CSX will do and if they will ever make a DA/SA version.

Hi Chris, nice video, as usual. As a DA/SA guy myself, I personally prefer (or at least I don't mind) a manual slide-mounted safety for carry. I have always practiced a draw stroke that integrates disengaging the safety; it very quickly became a natural part of my draw, and it feels weird to do it any other way.
I think the Smith & Wesson 3rd generation single stack DA/SA subcompacts (3913, CS9, your 3953, etc.) are among the best carry guns ever made; it's a shame they aren't made anymore. A CS9 is almost identical in size to a Shield, weighs just 2oz more, has all the advantages of DA/SA, but came out just as the popularity of striker-fired guns was exploding (but unfortunately ahead of the subcompact craze).
The cancellation of the XD-E is too bad, I had the XD-E high on my list of carry guns to explore. There are some subcompact 9mm DA/SA guns available, but most use double stack mags and I prefer single stack for the size and weight advantage.
I've been hoping for years that Beretta would come out with a single stack subcompact DA/SA gun in 9mm; I looked at the PX4 subcompact for carry, but it's really fat. The ideal would be a subcompact single stack version of the 92/M9, but that's pretty pie-in-the-sky. They'd sell a ton of them though.
As with any other industry, the highest profits come with catering to the lowest common denominator; as such any DA/SA subcompact will have to target a niche audience. Still, that niche is large enough that I have hope that someone will fill it.

All they need to do is redesign the H&K P30sk V1 for a staggered magazine and add an optic plate. DA/SA is a niche market, whereas anyone who likes striker fired guns can quickly adapt to the LEM trigger and new shooters will appreciate the additional safely inherent in a hammer fired system.

I read about the Springfield XDE in a Firearms magazine when they first came out and was interested, but I have always shot 45acp and waited for that caliber to come out. I purchased an XDE in 45acp in the spring of 2018 and have put it through a lot of use and used it for everyday carry. I have no complaints about my XDE and have had no issues with it. Price point and competition. If a first time buys asks most enthusiasts will recommend a glock or M&P are always the best choice until they build confidence.
But I’ve just never understood all the hate that an external safety gets. I’ve carried at least a dozen guns over the years. At least 5 with a safety and I now prefer to have it. I’ve never accidentally flipped a safety on or off.

Like you, I don't think the DA/SA is the issue for sales. Look at how hot the CZ-P07 sells!
Springfield released a pistol which could have competed with the S&W shield in 2014. But they released it to compete with the Sig P365 in 2021, and it's not even close to comparable.
Compared the the Sig P365, the 9mm 3.3" barrel XDE is 1" longer, 3/4" taller, 7 oz heavier (that's 40%!!!) the same width, and holds 4 less rounds.
And yet, the lowest XDE price online right now is $450. The P365 is available for $460 with a 10rd magazine or $530 with the 12 rd.

These pistols are highly prized in the DA/SA enthusiast market. I don't think the XD-E would be competitive in this market and without that it was going to fail
I hear a lot of people bad mouth the XD series but while I no longer own any my experience with them has been good. If I were in the market for a full size 10mm I would definitely choose the XD-M over the G20 because it has a fully supported chamber.

When it first came out a lot of people were really scratching their heads, in this age of Glock 43X, SiG 365, and Hellcats would a manufacturer go seemingly backwards in tech?
Well, I think they anticpated the current resurgence of DA/SA in todays market. Just a mite too early. Also, bigger, slimmer guns are simply more comfortable and easier to shoot for a lot of people.

In the dark, you can see 3 little glowing dots on top of your gun, but you can't identity your target.
When you use a light to properly ID the target, the night sights get totally washed out, but you can perfectly see the silhouette of your irons.
Hopefully the wide adoption of optics will eventually push these things out of the market.

They are useful under very specific circumstances. Like if you're standing in a room with low light, but your target is in the next room and illuminated. Also useful when transitioning from daytime outside to inside a dark building and your eyes are still adjusting (though this is more of a concern for law enforcement than armed citizens). I like night sights because good ones (like the Ameriglo CAP sights in this video) tend to also have features that make them more visible under good lighting (ie, highly visible neon colored front sight with a black or subdued rear sight). There's no reason you can't get these features in non-tritium sights, but you seldom see that, except for fiber optic sights.

I have owned the XDS and XDE in .45 acp. I prefer a .45 but I'm not a big guy. Both guns fit well in my hand and were a breeze to shoot. I prefer the XDE and conceal carry with a IWB pocket holster. The limited mag capacity keeps the firearm at a manageable weight, but it is still just heavy enough to help recoil management.

Boy you are singing my song at 10:18 with your "if I could only have...." - couldn't agree more. I find it both interesting and confusing that no mfgr is addressing this market, however small, and I doubt it's as small as some think. Decent CCW size DA/SA with 10rds or more with modern options. Was looking at a BDA .380 this morning because it's relatively small and 13+1, if it wasn't $850+ I'd get one for old times sake. Still might.

I always wanted to but one of these. I love da/sa pistols. But the limited capacity was the only thing that kept me from purchasing. If they were available in double stack mags they would've been more desirable in my opinion. Oh well...

    Here's to hoping another company makes a slim, double-stack, DA/SA 9mm :,(

I love my XD-E. It has my favorite safety/ decocker system of all of my guns.

Living as I do in Minneapolis, my EDC for most of the year, fall winter spring, when wearing a jacket, is my Beretta 92F that I've owned since 1990, I've put so many rounds through it that I had to buy a new barrel a couple of years back. But during the summer my EDC is a stock Springfield XDe, I've had it since 2017 and I have to say I absolutely love it, it's a great shooter and I carry it with the nine round magazine and one in the pipe, not cocked and locked but I do carry it with the safety off. I agree with Paul Harrell that with a DA/SA, the long double action first trigger pull makes it safe to carry with the safety off. I have the 3.8 inch barrel version, and though Springfield never made an XDe IWB holster for anything other than the 3.3 inch barrel, I just bought that one and x-acto knife cut the front stopper of the holster off. To carry the XDe during the summer, I typically wear a back microfiber short sleeved polo with a black nylon sleeveless jacket. That way I can carry it with the jacket unzipped and with the black gun and holster no one's ever noticed that I'm carrying. All that said, I'll conclude by saying that I would never own or carry a striker fired pistol. I know I'm in the tiny minority and I'm not saying anything against striker fans, I just don't think they are anywhere near as safe to carry as an exposed hammer fired pistol. There are thousands of striker owners with bullet holes in their quads, but that never, or almost never, happens to exposed hammer slide or frame mounted safety DA/SA owners. Just my two cents... 😁

It's like a slimmed-down Sig P-239. Very sexy. One thing though, it can be carried locked and cocked, unlike most Da/Sa pistols.

It came out with a single stack Mag. Hard to go for it over a 365 or Hilkert.

Didn't see this video when you first put it out. I sold my 9mm XDE shortly after I bought it to buy a P365 and immediately regretted it, because I'm just a DA/SA guy. Luckily there are still a lot of new ones out there and I bought one again a few months ago and also talked a friend into buying one to replace his P99 AS. I put anti-DA/SA guys up there with anti-Trumpers. I think just having a decocker is best, since you really can't accidentally pull a DA trigger. If they made one in 40SW/357 Sig or 10mm it would be my daily carry. The pistol is really thin and smooth. For my first one I used a ClipDraw gun clip. I always carried it without a holster. My main carry these days is a Sig P224 in 357 Sig that I also usually carry without a holster.
