I've heard dozens of versions of this song. This is the first one I've heard so far that really has a truly different take on it. I can understand why it would raise passions on both sides. I personally really really like it. That's the beauty of this song... it invites you to make it your own.
I hate how people dislike this cover.. This is my favorite cover ever. It's amazing, and super calming. Thanks for posting it, couldn't find it anywhere else.
what?! people disliking this cover? they're out of their minds , because this is really a great cover and for ppl to have an idea; this version stayed in my head since i was 17 years old, i never forgot it. now im 39! and i prefer it to massive attack's
It's YLT. It's what they do. Nobody else can do it. Cover any song, and put their spin on it; then write a gajillion songs of their own from folk to pop to RnB to acid jazz to crazed psychedelic guitar burning. For 30 years.
Well, my girlfriend left me, I'm balding, I have no future, my mom thinks i still love pokemon more than her, my butt has a crack in it, my college insisted I enroll in kindergarten again, i have dandruff, i dont have love handles, i have deathgrips, and i just got the flu. But, I'm thankful for this song.
My favorite version, so cool and soothing. If I had a car I would drive it playing this song. As a matter of fact I am driving it in my mind being thankful for having this song to trip to 🛣️🚘🌄🏜️🎼
Theres nothing like the original when William DeVaughn made this record in the 70s and it was fitting for the time and things that were happening then a lot of these young people they're not going to even understand what that song is all about except for Cadillac it was perfect in the 70s nobody can do it like William DeVaughn
Help me out folks, did Yo La Tengo do a live recording of this song? Because I heard it on the radio 20 years ago, and remember the vocals being thicker, making Ira's and Gorgia's less distinct and singing in an octave higher; remember the tempo being faster as well.
@@Rufusdos I just listened to it again and it's unambiguous. Brits know the word from American TV and music. Rod Stewart had a song and album called "Gasoline Alley" and another song called "Let Me Be Your Car" (written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin) with the line "Fill me up with five star gasoline."
Don't you watch the news, man? More and more universities these days are 'out-sourcing' degrees to kindergartens, because they just don't have the manpower or funding for any kind of proper, say, engineering or medicine faculty. Kindergarten teachers are good teachers (even though it's mostly fingerpainting) and are always very patient and smile a lot, so it makes sense that they should teach fluid mechanics and whatnot... 'Fingerpaint' is a fluid anyway, so I think it's a really good idea.

The drum groove is amazing
But not replicated well live from what I've seen

@@drunkenmasterii3250 oh, good taste! u didn't knew about massive attack's and i didn't know bout Love's cover and i love Love :)))
I agree. And I play it and sing along with this every mofo day!!🍀🤠✴️❤️
This is so utterly sick. I love it when great music intersects like this. I bet William DeVaughn is stoked.

That was for the haters, of course

Every few years I have to hear this song...
i am sure i lent this EP to a girl i was dating and she never gave it back. Thanks, Iris.
Georgia's vocals on this are so great.
most beautiful cover ever, it makes me cry
Diamonds in the bag, sunroof top ,
diggin' the scene, witha gangster lean... yeah
Just be thankful. simple
My goodness, this tune is so typicall and yet so surprising. Love it!!

They really took it down a notch, I would love to hear these guys' take on 'Kumbayah'
I wish iTunes store had this song.
i had this cd - black hole is one of my fav ylt songs!!!
This is just great.
They have a touch of "The Fleetwoods" in their sound. I like it.
I'd say it's my 3rd favorite version of this song. William Devaughn being the first.
positive message really made me reflect
Added to that, it was years later that I fell in love with DeVaughn's original, and I never realized it was the same song! #ProustianMoments :)
Them drums tho!
so extremely good.
Why is this song not on spotify!? weird.
Krazy Calvin it should be!!!
Not shocked
Laid back with no return ................lupie loop

in one of wfmu fundraiser events, afaik. but not 20 years ago.
might have been James (bass) singing it
They did a live video of this song once. "Live at grimies ylt" first song, and its really really good
Musica solo para entendidos!!
No te creas especial... Sé agradecido, no engreído
The only thing they pretty much duplicated was the bassline. Everything else is a new take.
are you serious?
Beet cover EVER
Massive Attack's cover of this song will always be the definitive version, just so smooth and effortlessly sexy...but this isn't bad.
well since massive attack isn't 1/1000th of the band YLT is, I guess they could use the shine.
Nahhh. William DeVaughn's original is the best.
Massive Attack is docked a grade for singing "gasoline" instead of "gangster lean."
@@nomoremister I doubt it. "Gasoline" isn't even a word in British English.

Diggin the scene with petroline.
Nice cover, i know the curtis mayfield version. Smooth
not curtis mayfield

Sounds like the girl from Bob's Burgers singing..
Apart from the sickening vocals, the rhythm is so fucking monotonous!!
+krazeerrol you're an idiot.
Like a bad Karaoke version.
That's deliberate. If you're missed that, it's over your head.
My favorite whitey remake.
This is just horrible. The horror.
Hot damn!!!
