- The Strokes playing at the Astoria in London, UK in January 2001.
This was before the Strokes released Is This It so some songs have different lyrics and some parts are switched around. Enjoy! - Ігри
0:00 The Modern Age
3:31 Soma
6:20 Barely Legal
10:26 Jules Talking
10:45 Someday
13:48 Alone, Together
17:18 Last Nite
20:40 Hard to Explain
25:05 New York City Cops
28:58 Trying your luck
32:32 Take it or leave it
The most notable difference from the album versions are lyrical changes. Like in Barely legal, Someday, Alone Together, and Hard to explain. Julian seems to be making up the lyrics in all of these early shows. Also, the guitars in Last nite, and Take it or leave it, are different..
Te mereces el cielo :,v
and the solo in nyc cops
The lyric changes are really interesting
Last nite is the same
This is a good audio Mixing, just Nick's guitar is a lil Buried but still great, who recorded, was it recorded from the Mixer?
Fun fact, Peter Doherty was in the crowd as he was still working on The Libertines and were trying to find out who The Strokes were out of jealousy and admiration. He even went to their next gig in Liverpool (or was it Manchester?) just to see them again
Fake news
@@DrVonNostrand It's from his own biography "A likely lad"
And the 00s indie rock movement was born
Mambo Nassau we need a new modern indie rock movement from New York City asap
The indie rock movement was actually born almost 2 decades earlier.
@@ironinquisitor3656 Which is why they said the 00s. This was very much its own wave.
Short lived tribute to early-mid 90s in early 00's....Not bad little indie scene.
But its all derived fr early-mid 90s.
@@ironinquisitor3656 REM....
Imo? Most important band in America history.
it’s always fun listening to the earlier versions of their songs, it feels like an alternate universe lol
I wonder if Julian ever just fell asleep while singing lol
no
One weird thing about The Strokes that I feel bad for them about is that they'll never get the experience of not being The Strokes and being a fan of them.
Facts
they never know how cool and great they are from fans perspective
Alex Turner would get closer than anyone else to be both
"“I remember when I knew. I remember it so clearly even though we were still so tiny. It was snowy and we were playing Luna Lounge. There were forty people, but it felt good, it was a good forty. We played “Modern Age” and “Last Nite” for the first time. After that show it was like, “Yeah, we’re better than the other people who are playing.” I don’t even say that to be mean. You just felt the energy when we were playing those songs, like, “I wish I was seeing it and not playing it.” - Albert.
For real. On top of the fucking insanely good music theyre also super cool
It's insane to see how much he grew between this and their iconic performance of it at the MTV $2 Bill just one year later. They still sound great here, but I just feel like Julian matured so much in that one year
You wanna see even more insane maturity within a year? Go see their 2000 Arlene's Grocery show vs. this 2001 London show.
probably sobered up a tad
Yeah, he's slowly fazing out the more manic and energetic vocal style he had early on in return for that classic coolness and pure confidence that became his staple.
@@TheStinkusofYore couldn’t have described it any better
This video looks like it's some rare footage from 60s :)
Hard to Explain is so different
just cooked from the deep web
Interesting lyrical differences! seems like he was still formulating some of the ideas or making it up on the spot as the songs matured. Amazingly enough, even the seemingly off the cuff phrases are still killer one liners with similar tongue-in-cheek, sarcastic and oxymoronic/juxtaposing meanings.
wish the visual quality was a little better tho
except for instances like 30:49 "Some went wrong in t'reach..." uh, what? XD
Jules must have gotten real burnt out post Is This It. He was completely in different form on this show. 😕
Oliver Kalamata touring fucks people up. It's hell
Kalamata
This modern age version literally sounds like really old Elvis. You could definitely draw a line from Hounddog to the Strokes.
I might think this is the tour they're doing in In Transit video.
No, In Transit was recorded after the release of Is This It in 2002. This performance is from January 2001 during their mini UK tour when they also played at NME awards (another video thats out there).
in transit was summer of ‘01
The bass sounds so different with that Rickenbacker... Glad he changed to the Jazz bass
I like it more with the rick
2001. Perfection. Jules moved around the stage. I love this. Ty so much for posting. The Strokes are the best band in the universe.
Thanks for the upload.
Man...I miss these days. It's crazy that you're watching history being made and you don't even know it. Love Julian's vocals. I swoon. 💘💘💘
thx for uploading ..
I’m 18 years old and I literally love this kind of music, I really wish I can be older, so I would have enjoyed the best time of the strokes, in my opinion one of the best bands in its gender of music.
Los Chanclas R6 there's more than two musical genders
l m a fucking o @@haroldlovell234
what are you talking about? we can enjoy it way better nowadays
I'm the same age as the guys in the band and it was a big thing being able to see them live back then. The seedy bars and dives they played at. There was always a huge energy. I knew they'd be famous.
I wish i was 18
Great to see Julian move around the stage. Classic old show. ty posting.
It’s funny that they needed to play that entire album just to have a full concert 😂
15:31 i love when he goes demo on live alone together
Ty for post. The early yrs. Julian in a skinny tie and jacket. Perfect.
1:13 first shot of albert; all we see is hair. perfecto.
Leaving just in timeeee stayed here for a whileeeeeww
One of the best early shows
this is so perfect
I saw them open for Doves at 930 Club in DC (i think) just before this. My memory is it is was their second show after New York. Me and my buddy Rick talked to Nikolai Fraiture after the show for about 20 minutes
lucky!!!! was that at the black cat maybe? (i happen to have the audio for a bunch of their early concerts). their early concerts are real raw and full of energy, which isn't found in the studio edits.
I think the Doves tour was throughout March 2001, according to this Albert snippet from Radio 1 British radio doc - ua-cam.com/video/0JLa2JgaLPE/v-deo.html - I saw Strokes open for Guided by Voices in Feb 2001 at Bowery Ballroom, also mentioned by Albert in this recap of the year's touring...
@@TheCurryCaveupload those audios !
Pretty sure this is where oasis came and saw them
This is like a fever dream of the strokes with these different lyrics plus the footage🤣
I wonder how late it was when all their ‘Is This It?’ songs had the lyrics finalized
It sounds incredible
empezaba la historia STROKE
Soma literally sounds like the album version here. Awesome
love the tempo on hard to explain, wish they kept it that way
not surprised if this was their prime sounds like they really wanted it, inspirational
I was down the front for this !
Me too
I’m so jealous!!
No you weren't
Someday is almost still the demo version!!
this sounds pretty much as good as the mtv show they did a year later. The lyrics are just a bit untidy here but the bands playing is just perfect. Unfortunately the levels of the guitars are a bit weird. Alberts guitar is so low it makes Someday sound oddly weak and laid back. Either way… love this performance!
Love it
lights off LP tight x
What a great fucking performance of Soma
last time we saw jules in a suit
I watched this show thinking the same thing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The best
Baby Julian didnt give af. Metal and melodic
Rareee
I liked more the drums in this soma version
25:37 I like the "Fight in the streets"
25:00 Waou. If these people make an album, this one will be the first openner I think !!!
they did 6 albums
🎉🎉🎉
Why are you putting ads in this...
It kills the flow especially if you cannot skip it !

That New York City cops solo tho!
En directo o en lata, los buenos grupos suena casí igual, como y aquí THE STROKES.
They may have been rich boys but with all that privilege they still chose to stick with an unknown producer over a big name so that their album wouldn't sound so slick. And there were no references for the sound they were going for in 2001. Suck on that Steve Albini
Not all of them were rich boys 🙄🤦🏽♀️After all this years u don't know that???
Only Albert and Julian were from a rich family, Nikolai and the others no
Velvet underground long live
Aw, when Julian was fun

London 2001? Can anyone see Alex Turner?
The boys at their prime. I guess they're just cursed their debut album is the best among their other works.
Wrong.

I was a few months older than you, also no clue lol. Saw them in Camden in February, amazing nite
