Hey Lex - next time you have Elon on the show, ask him about what type of government he plans for Mars. Because it’s going to become sovereign just like the British run colony in America broke away from the British and declared independence. We can’t have all these old out of touch earth people telling the people on Mars how to live their lives.

Regulations grow from needs. As technology & industry grows and changes, regulations must evolve too. Regs for industrial water treatment in a 1950’s ford automotive plant will be much different than 2020’s ford.
Government does have a tendency to create officials & offices that really don’t have a purpose. Each administration adding their own, without cutting the old out. So 100% agree there.

They arent growing unbridled… they are constantly being checked . But think again about what you are suggesting. Deflationary policy is government regulation. So are you suggesting we have run away inflation? You do realise deflationary policy is mainly to protect employees, the elderly, the disabled and poor. If we let inflation run off completely unless you worked in extremely high demand/paying industries you will most likely face poverty

By the way, ALL of Will Durant's books and lessons are online and they are great, about history and specific thinkers and philosophers. I also recommend Will Durant on all his lessons... IF you are a bit learned on any one of these thinkers and historical leaders you will disagree with his view a bit; with his always over optimistic view of them "a man of his time" is the explanation normally given when that man or woman or nation fuked up.

    • @Sobanhassan1761

Yes, indeed, the "great man in history were normally bad men" as Lord Acton (?) said, the one who said "all power corrupts"
The new of these great men by the affected ones is very different than the ones benefiting from these great men's actions. I remember reading the People's History Of Rome, and speaks on how the peoples around Rome didn't get why the Romans were so warlike and why they never seemed satisfied with what they took from them and were in constant state of expansion warring with all the lands they could reach.
Notice the Greeks and "Hellenisation" of the world idea, i.e, Alexander the "great"
This state was later worsened by new war tech and thus Europeans did it to the world, invading the world and autonomous people, but they were so sure there people NEEDED them somehow and their ideas.
Also remember Will Durant was one of the BETTER historians and thinkers; so imagine the rest.

My question is not ironic or challenging towards you, I wonder what your opinion or even facts are for why he is not as commonly known or popular, you would think the same people who listen to Durant would want to hear Toynbee also... I don't know him, so I cannot give an opinion about him, but if he is as you say... why??

I just finished doing a few hours of reading and learning a bit about Toynbee, and so far I think you are wrong, his Challenge and Response Theory of how the unit in history is the "civilization" is way too simplistic and obvious to merit that standing you give him, bc OF COURSE a civilization rises and falls according to the Response it gives to the Challenges it faces, and OF COURSE it is always a minority of GOOD leaders that can do that, many times charismatic ones, he doesn't mention (so far) that most times such leaders get drunk with power and end up atrocious, the few that do not end up accommodation the challenges and thus creating, or updating for the better, their societies.
      Did I get him right??
If I did get him right, this is NOT better than Durant. He is way more expansive in this thinking and conclusions, with many faceted answers and motives, as normally all social groupings are.

I’ve been saying for years we should have a basic constitutional government with the basic laws written in stone that every school kid can learn and understand. Then lesser regulations passed as required. Every generation, or say 25 years, the regulations are wiped clean and the ones that worked could be revoted on and returned to the books with reforms or additions made again, as required.

It's all about incentives. If the incentive is everyone to move into a few tiny dots on the map called cities then competition leads to inflation, concentrated power and wealth, empowers the psychopaths and sociopaths by forcing resource dependency on large numbers of people. Kids have to be a financial and relative immediate contribution to wealth as they are in a rural setting. Put everyone in a city and kids are a wealth drain on parents.

You've put your finger on one of the major causes of the social and political mess we find ourselves in. That would be the mass urbanization of America and Western society in general. The flooding of the population into ever larger metropolitan urban centers magnifies social ills such as crime, substance addiction, unraveling of beneficial social institutions both religious and secular alike, quality decline in both basic and higher education, and disintegration of the family structure. Ironically, electronic communications, if properly utilized, can remove some of the incentives to urbanize the population, but countering that is the technological and mechanical advancements that have led to the decline of human involvement in agriculture. There is less need for the small agrarian communities which once characterized much of the country. 150 years ago, a large proportion of the population made its living primarily or peripherally from agriculture, now it is probably less than 5%. A reverse migration from the cities to small towns may entice some percentage of city dwellers to move back to a simpler style of life where they can remain connected to work through the internet, but enjoy a less stressful mode of everyday life where crime and social upheaval are less prevalent. That's probably not enough to totally reverse mass urbanization, but it might ameliorate it to some extent. Perhaps I'm clutching at straws here.

And yeah, more people means more people that can just do whatever they want, assuming they don’t have to work. Thank you for reminding me of the Roman child tax credit. I am now infinity percent against the child tax credit in the USA. We need to decrease debt as our approach to increasing birthrate, which is why I propose the Federal Reserve needs to continue raising interest rates for as long as Only Fans is in business.
