Biased ass review. So when he says he's joking around you don't take that into consideration but when he says he wants to change the rap game you take it so seriously that you make half your review about it? It's obvious you just don't like Lil Dicky and where he's taking his music. It's something new that for some reason you aren't ready for and it has your panties in a bunch. Smh.

theneedledrop You do understand he started rap as a gateway to comedy right? It was only until he really realized he had a passion in hip-hop that shit really started getting serious with him. And serious doesn't always mean having "thoughtful" or "meaningful" bars throughout his music. It just means he knows rap is what he wants to do, he's found what style he wants to go with in his music, and he's manifesting that. Why does something "Changing the game" always have to be based around someone making it out of the struggle with deep meaning? Hasn't that been a topic in hip-hop for a while? Cause we all know Dicky didn't struggle, but that doesn't mean his debit card getting declined after trying to buy drinks isn't serious to him, it's just not serious to you. His shit is dope, original, funny, and i'm happy to say that I respect it.

I respectfully disagree with your views on Lil Dicky, as well as Childish Gambino and even Hopsin to an extent. I think you take them too much at their face value. Like when you listen to A$AP Ferg you are able to sit back and enjoy it for what it is, and not necessarily break it down to super tiny pieces. Sometimes it's about how the record sounds, like Gambino, or that the corny joke was meant to be a corny joke like in the case of Lil Dicky, who in my opinion has great comedic timing if not straight LOL jokes. I just respect the authenticity of these dudes But different strokes for different folks, i guess. I come here for that too, since there are very few rap records we usually agree on anyway, haha.

***** what is so cringe-worthy about it? white rappers are discriminated against in the rap game and the only time they are taking seriously when they rap about college or when they are being outrageous like Eminem. i think the theneedledrop is misrepresenting his statements. when lil dicky says he is "going to change the game" he is not talking about re defining the rap genre with his music. what he is saying by him being successful he will encourage other upper middle class kids to take risks and to following their dreams even if their dream is to become a raper. getting more people in the rap game, no matter their ethnicity, is changing the game. lil dicky was able to make a album because he was able to make a connecting with all sorts of people from different walks of life. lil dicky is destructing rap with his lyrics and encouraging people to shoot for the stars. in the song " the antagonist" he did not say he hates his funny raps. he said he loves his funny raps but sometimes he wants to spaz and in order for people to listen he has to draw them in with the funny shit first before they take his serious shit seriously. it seems like theneedledrop is judging the person and not really analyzing the lyrics. most of the features on the album are fans of his and some provided hooks and verses for free because they believe in what he is doing. I know everybody has different taste and i cant blame theneedledrop for not liking the album but i can object how he did the review because he sounded jaded. When Lil' Dicky says he's trying to change the game, he means he's trying to appeal to an audience that until now, hasn't really had a voice in rap. Middle class suburban white guys. He constantly brings up that rap is always about the the urban lifestyle, drugs, jewels and flaunting cash. His music focuses more on the sort of mediocre, awkward, and insecure nature of middle class lifestyle and you're average male struggles with life and love. This is how he relates to his audience, what makes him unique, and why people like him. Plus a lot of his humor is self-depreciating which again is very different from the typical rap artist. Granted he talks himself up in his songs, but that's in reference to his rap skills, not his overall character, which he constantly jabs at. Honestly, most of his humor is funny in the "it's funny because it's true/realistic" sense, as well as poking fun at himself all the time. If he wants to stay relevant, he might have to change that up a little and find something new to joke about, but we'll see what he's got in store for the future.

+Richard Cano Dude that is fuckin bullshit. You seriously think rap didnt find an audience with Middle class suburban white guys before lil Dicky? Just cause they came from the ghetto or the streets or whatever doesnt mean they dont have an audience in another societal class.

I didn't say they didn't find an audience. Any rapper can find an audience with anyone if the music's good. I said they couldn't relate to what they were rapping about. Most middle class white dudes can't relate to growing up in poor ghetto areas, knowing gang members, being a prison, or getting in fights. They can however relate to physical insecurity, bad luck with women, and just all around not being "cool" in the sense. No other rapper really does that. They all say "I'm a badass. Just try fucking with me." LD's message is, "I'm kind of a pussy. But that's ok. Most of us are pretty average like that."
      Also, watch your language, homie.

Frank Wave LOL only classic albums get 5 stars on iTunes? Almost every single damn album gets 5 stars on iTunes, cos people go there just to give albums they like 5 stars. The soundtrack for Pitch Perfect 2 currently has 5 stars. What exactly are you basing this off?

@henry you're mistaken. Very few albums get 5 stars. The pitch perfect soundtrack doesn't have 5 stars lol.. but what about other sources? Like I take metacritic pretty seriously for example. I know many people don't tho, but to me, metacritic is probably the most reliable source.

I was shocked to hear how shallow his review was. Rap game persona and lyrics are all connected to the art of music. Fantano seemed to really have a personal agenda. Disrespectful to rap WHAT!?? Has he heard him on Sway's radio show or the track he did of russel westbrook? I always thought Rap should'nt be tied to being hard, fukin' bitches and showing off. Rap is music art should connect to every facet of life. Young DICK is the real deal. Love his skill too, I'm sure Snoop and T-pain feel this way toooooo.

He says, multiple times, that he has a decent flow, puts great effort into tracks, and generally that he has a bit of potential. He was covering entire songs and the concepts of them and why he did or did not like them. Plus, it doesn't help that this album's intentions are painfully obvious: Dicky gets to unload all of his "trash" material (which he thinks is trash, in his own opinion) and now he can show us just how INCREDIBLE he is.
Eminem responded to criticism of Relapse on Recovery, and it was okay for him to call Relapse trash because it's hindsight. However, if Eminem spent a good portion of Relapse going "I hate this album, wait for my next one!" then I'd be pissed.

TheOneAndOnlyNAB Lil dicky doesn't say he hates professional rapper at all? He says that this is the "absolute best" he could've made the album, you're letting Fantano's strawman argument sink in lol. Lil dicky doesn't say his album is bad he says he knows if he goes for a 100% serious rapper identity he'd have to be fake because that's not who he is. He's putting the actual art back into hip hop and its great, I'm tired of all the clone rappers talking about the same shit every song.

Ricci Schaeffer If Lil Dicky says he hates comedy/joke rappers while having an album littered with comedy/joke rap, then he's basically saying he hates a large portion of his own album.

In retrospect Dicky and his "slacker with aspirations to be one of the greats" has aged about as well as the majority of his fans who were spoken to by that ethos. He never seriously put himself out there, he washed everything he made in enough coats of irony and self-deprication that he wouldn't be upset by it when people came down harshly on it, and he ultimately dropped rap as another thing which he was able to temporarily get some praise from people with little persepctive or interest in but which he couldn't actually make waves in without exposing too much of his own personal weakness and his ego to.
Kendrick bleeds for his art, he tells us too much. Logic, for as much as the quality may vary, takes it entirely too personally when his music gets bad reviews because you can tell he really cares.
Dicky represents the most valueless of art. It's a shitpost. It's "I was only pretending". It's low-effort and heartless because it served to stroke the ego of the creator while also sheltering it. It's the sound of a guy who smokes too much weed and talks about how good of a writer he could be if he ever sat down to actually write out his ideas. It's every white guy from the suburbs you knew in college who came from a family with more money than yours could have ever dreamed of.

leading up to the end of this video I was getting ready for you to give this album a strong 4 or a light 5. It's music, legible music. He is somewhat clever with a really tight flow. On top of that you can pick 3 songs out of this lengthy album and hold them up to the light and see that he isnt an absolute waste of air.

I'm black, and I live for amazing artists. I agree this album is is too much comedy and he hates it too I'm sure. But hear this. People sleep on dicky hardcore, but, his lyrical dexterity is unshakable. And the silly songs I think is a business play to introduce himself in the game. Think about Eminem, from infinite, then all shady comedy to break into the game then real again to let the word be heard. It's good business acumen. Listen to Russel Westbrook on a farm, antagonist, then mul the messege over thinking big picture. I promise you are sleeping on dicky. He's hyper aware. Give it another shot I promise you won't be disappointed. Stay woke y'all.

    • @escapadebeats6839
      @escapadebeats6839 6 років тому +4

I agree that Lil Dicky can rap, but Eminem is a funny rapper not a guy doing a character. Lil Dicky is a stupid hip hop joke first off and the comedy is pretty low bar. No one is arguing that he can rap. The argument is that it's disrespectful to hip hop. For instance on Freaky Friday he raps about how if he could be black for a day he would marvel at his much bigger his dick is and say the n word and black hip hop fans still support him.

Guys, Anthony is allowed to not enjoy something. And just because you like it, doesn't mean Anthony is calling you a tasteless moron. I have friends that like some music that I think is miserable to listen to, and yet we're still friends. Let Anthony be your friend.
On that note, I think Pillow Talking is brilliant. Taking this ridiculous style of inflection that's trending in some modern rap and putting it over an awkward Og Maco-type minimalist beat, and applying it to an absurd back-and-forth pedestrian philosophical conversation for 10 minutes with dopey interjections from his "Brain" is just plain funny to me.
