Firstly, this is a fantastic design and a beautiful looking tote bag, made one for my wife yesterday and she loves it. Also, the video itself is easy to follow and very well put together. However, for anyone not familiar with making any kind of lined bags, be aware of a mistake in the video at step 7 (4 min 26 seconds) where the stitch lines for the sides of the lining are shown as full along both sides. Please note one side should have a gap left open big enough so the whole thing can be turned inside out, this is stitched later in the video. Attach bottom to each outer layer. Top stitch below the seam line to reinforce. Make corners (should be 5.5” across), trim off excess fabric. Liner: Fold liner in half and sew down each side, leave an opening on one side to turn the bag right-side out after assembling. Make corners (should be 5.5” across), trim off excess fabric. Finish: place right sides together and match top edge. Sew around top edge. Turn bag right side out through the side opening. Sew closed the opening and push the liner into the outer bag. Top stitch around the top of the bag.

I have a small sewing/knitting business, so I need to replenish items I have made. Thank you. Nice pattern. I usually do a square cut for the corners. They just seam easier for me and all come out the same dimensions.

@@rtcrook3219 Thanks for your help. I thought I'd have to do interfacing, but the fact that it can be rolled up is a good point. I'm glad to see this bag standing up quite well without it.
I just finished making this bag! It turned out amazing, the video was an amazing guide to use for this. For anyone looking for the finished size, mine turned out to be: 17 inches wide 12 inches tall 5 inches deep I used 1/4 inch and 1/3 inch seam allowance for most of the project, so if you use different seam allowances you’re might turn out a little bigger/ smaller. I chose to use a lightweight fusible interfacing on the lining layer to help give it more structure, and I also added interior pockets. Something I would change for next time I make one is to stitch all the way up the straps when adding them to the side panel (around 1:40). It was implied in the video to only stick an inch or so above the pocket, but I think it would look nicer stitched all the way to the top. I don’t love the look of the topstitching at the end going across the handles (around 7:00) so by going all the way up you might be able to avoid that line. I definitely recommend using interfacing!! Especially if you’ll be carrying around a laptop and a book or two like me, it helps add more stability and strength to the finished bad. I used it on just the lining layer but plan on adding it to the bottom panel as well next time so that it might stand on its own. Otherwise I give this pattern a 10/10!!
Hello, sorry to disturb you, I just want to know more about the bottom panel you mentioned. I am a beginner, so I would appreciate any tip on what material you can use to achieve stability on the bottom of the bag :) thank you
I mentioned this is another comment, but stitching the straps all the way to the top of the outer layers before you stich the lining to it will not work for this design. If you want to stitch them all the way up to the top at the end, you should. But seriously, don't do it before hand. If you do, when you stitch the lining to the outer layer, you'll be preventing yourself from being able to finish the job. You'll have to cut away the stitching that ends up sewing the straps to themselves on the last step. You NEED that extra space until after it's turned out. Trust me, I learned that the hard way.
Hi,I am Elea-maryam I am 11 years old and I have to say, this video has changed my life. I have made this bag 5 times !!! I give this video 5 stars even if there was a mistake at the bit when you are sewing the bag inner layer but the simple explanations forgive.all to say that this video has a lot more ups than downs!
I made this as a gift for my friend! I love the pattern so much. The end result is an extremely professional looking bag. The only thing is that I missed when you left the turning point in the side seam of the lining, so I just left a 3" gap along the top seam and turned there, closing it when I top stitched it closed (technically more efficient) so I am super happy!!!
Shelly & DIY Sewing, thank you for adding this comment about making sure to leave the turning point in the side seam of the lining, a crucial, necessary step. Leaving the turning point on the side of the lining as opposed to the top edge of the tote's outer shell and lining also allows one to "hide" the stich line to close the lining inside the tote once it has been turned out. It leaves the top edge of the tote uniform, cleanly stitched, and very professional-looking. Excellent tutorial video with impressive results. Amazing, simple, elegant creation and extremely useful. Great success to all your projects!
Thank you for the lovely tutorial. For anyone who forgets to add a turning gap, never fear. It is easy enough to go back with a seam ripper and remove stitches to make a turning gap. Flip bag out, sew up seam and you are done!
This was my first sewing project ever! Made it with thick canvas, broke a needle, extended the strap length and added a hand strap. Feeling very satisfied so thank you for the pattern and instructions!
I'm a beginner sewer and tried this tutorial - its BRILLIANT. Took me a couple hours, but it was so worth it! I skipped the lining because I was using thick canvas material anyway. Important note not to stitch the handles starting right from top to bottom of the panel - start stitching the handle a cm below the top of the panel so that you can fold over the panel to finish the top stitch later. Also would recommend if you are a beginner like me starting with black material/black thread or white/white thread because omg my lines were so wonky haha.
Hi~Aliyah~🍀 I feel really good because you shared what you felt while watching this video You must be very proud to have completed it. Thank you for the good comments. See you in the next video~🌿🌸🌿
I followed this tutorial exactly (appart from adding inner pockets) and my bag turned out perfect!!! Im so so pleased! Thanks so much for filming it, I appreciate it a lot!
@@АлянаВанчикова-и2ъ Hey! I can't tell exactly how much now off the top of my head, but the outer layer with the pockets but without straps took half of a meter exactly, and then the lining and inside pockets are another half a meter (bcoz the inside pockets were just as big as the outside ones), and then add the straps. So I think with a meter and a half all in all you should be fine, I just broke it down if you want to make it out of different fabrics 🤗🌞
I’ve made 6 bags over the last 18 months using this method and simple style. Yes, it’s great to view without all the talking like in other videos. The opening in the lining for turning was the only error in the video, but not a big problem. Love the style it’s classic.
I am going to try and make it! I have the measurements for fabric but could you please tell me how much fabric you bought for both the outer and inner parts? Thank you
Tried this out today, turned out amazing! Easy to follow instructions and the bag looks store bought. Like other comments I left out the turning and just left a gap in the top seam when attaching the lining and top-stitched it. Obsessed!
This was my first project back to sewing in over 13 years. It took me five days, but that was mostly me figuring out my machine and being careful. This guide was so incredibly clear and succinct. Everything was communicated super well, and there wasn’t any annoying filler for me to fast forward through. Thank you for this video. It kickstarted my love for sewing all over again :)
hi! Adrian Cardwell! Congratulations on starting sewing again! Your honest opinion is a great help to me! I'll be rooting for you in the new next video!🌸
Thank you! Made it, love it. It's a fast project. It turned out a bit smaller than I expected. Finished size (cca) 32 cm tall, 28 cm long and 14 cm wide
I made this a few days ago, I loved it. I modified it a bit to have a zipper closure and an umbrella holder inside. This will be my basic tote bag pattern from now on! Thank you.
@@chh4163 sorry I was travelling, I used cotton brush twill both as inner lining and outer. this time, I want to try using canvas or cotton. The twill was very sturdy and soft but a bulky when I packed it in my luggage. 😅
Thank you for this tutorial! My mom kept mentioning she wanted a tote made out of denim pants , so I use your tutorial to make it for her , I use the waist as handles and pockets for the front and back tote pockets, I use my cricut to add her grandkids names & she was in tears of happiness when she open her Christmas present , never did I get a reaction quite like that when I gave her a coach bag , thank you again ! Your tutorial is perfection!!!
There is a mistake in step 7 explanation. It was fail to mention to leave an opening when sewing for turning. THIS IS CRUCIAL INFORMATION FOR A BEGINNER.
I never used a sewing machine before today. Taught myself the basics, then followed this and managed to make a bag in a day. Well chuffed. GG on the clear instructions!! 🙌
As a beginner sewer who just bought her first sewing machine, this tutorial was amazing and I just finished my first bag! Thank you, this was so incredibly helpful and I’m incredibly happy with how it turned out for my first time sewing. 💕
@@arya-it8px I used cotton canvas for the exterior and handles. For the interior lining, I used a regular quilting cotton. I had originally bought 2.7 meters of each fabric because I wasn’t sure which tutorial I would use so I can’t say for certain, but I would say I used roughly 2.2 meters for the exterior and the handles, then I used roughly 1 meter for interior lining. I’m sorry I’m not entirely sure how much I used, my country uses the imperial system for measurements .
Just made that tote bag, it's my first ever sewing project. I'm a complete beginner, I made a lot of mistakes in the process trying to figure out everything for the first time. It turned out soooo pretty, I love it! This video is perfect to start and make some cool projects, I'll check the others!
@@shleymo It took me a few hours, i don't remember exactly, but it was about 4 (like 9am to 12pm), but i had to re-do some parts a couple of time so it might take a lot less time!
I just finish mine a couple of minutes ago, I'm so proud of the bag that I made thanks to you, I used 3 different fabrics, one for the upper part, another for the bottom and another for the lining, it's a very flexible design that you can combine with different colors and textures I will follow more tutorials from you, thanks
First time sewing and this video was very easy to follow and turned out amazing. I added a small embroidery piece on the pocket before sewing to make it more personalized and it worked perfectly.
For anyone wondering I made mine a bit bigger for personal preferences but I ended up making it with around 1.5 yards of cloth using some extra outlining all the pieces before cutting so I was able to use most of the cloth without some extra(not much)
In order to turn the bag, leave a gap on ONE SIDE OF THE LINING BAG. That way you can reach in this gap and turn it all right side out. She shows this in the video, but never mentions it directly.
I’ve made two of these for my grandchildren in the last 5 days. I really can’t get over how easy the video is to follow and the results are amazing, if I do say so myself!
I just made one of these yesterday and I cannot explain how professional and store-bought this design looks!! It’s absolutely incredible! I’m cutting out my pieces to make some more of these to replace using disposable plastic grocery bags! Thank you so much ♥️♥️
I tried this last night and it's a fool-proof pattern! I was going to use mi circular blade and pattern pieces but the blade wasn't sharp enough, but it still turned out great! Where do you start to sew the lining and leave the gap on? I left the gap with one of the straps and getting it straight after was a challenge haha
This is a wonderful tutorial, I love that i was able to press play and go. No Fluff. No Look At ME! from the creator. though she deserves all the love for this amazing video. I was able to whip this tote up in less than a couple hours, no stress, no hair pulling or crying! Thanks a million!!
2 hours in and I'm just at 1:50 :D Edit 1: next day and I'm at 4:03 I have made only the outer part and it took me 3 hours. (As a beginner its lowkey hard) final edit!: IM FINISHED!!! I slapped an iron on animal patch and it looks so professional. Some flaws with the threading due to an old style machine but still good!!! I'm suprised you dont have to do any special edge finish here! So I'm super happy with that! An I'm going to gift it to my friend and make more for me!!!

Many thanks for the effort and the pattern. White thread on white material made it tricky to see, and forgetting to include the turning gap caused momentary confusion. However, it is a great product!
I normally don’t comment but this was such an easy tutorial. I made my bag slightly bigger and even dyed the fabric and the bag came out so well. I wish there was a way to share pics cause I’m so happy with the outcome.
Fantastic tutorial. This was very easy to follow. I made this for my first ever sewing project and it looks like I bought it at the store. I'm astounded at the results.
Great video. Thank you so much for sharing. One addition is that we want to leave about a 5 inch gap on one side of the lining when sewing the sides of the lining so that when we sew it to the main bag, we have a space to turn the bag right side out. :)
I have never sewn anything, but my grandma recently passed away and I received her sewing machine (she was such a magician with it). I think I am going to try to sew this bag because it looks like something doable even by a non-sewer like me and I will feel closer to my nonna, thank you❤️ Edit: i decided i will use this comment as my little diary through my first sewing project ever lol
Day two: i did the other strap. This time the cutting of the fabbric was a bit easier but I am still struggling a bit, i will get the hang of it sooner or later Sad story: i don't have enough fabbric to cut the intern part, will have to find something else
Just did the rim of the pockets! It was a bit tricky because the corner was getting stuked in the machine (idk how to explain, but it would stuck and not moving as the needle proceeded) but they could be waaay worse lol
Thank you for sharing this tutorial. Very clear directions and easy to follow. I managed to make one similar like this with pockets inside instead of outside. I love the result.
I just wanted to take the time to say thank you for this video. I have covid and currently isolating, this has been the perfect project to keep me busy and use some fun material I’ve had for ages. I’ve been sewing for a long time but honestly struggle so much with it, your video was easy to follow and I’m so happy with the results 😍
It was an amazing project for sowing . First of all thank you so much for this easy tutorial. I am like the most beginner person in sewing like I literally had to learn how to sow straight lines and then also I messed it up thousands of times but it came out so great. 😊 if you are a begginer and want to practice your skills go for it
I just finished making this out of some hand dyed thick denim that I had...and other than the pockets ending up a little crooked, it looks great. Word of advice for anyone making this...use a new needle because you will be sewing through many layers of thick material. It will be a lot easier with a new sharp needle. I used a new quilting needle and it did the job. I would also iron the seams as you go so they are flat

I'm adapting the video to make a small backpack for my 2 y o granddaughter using left over fabric from a jumper I just finished. I will use fusible interface to stiffen the printed lawn cotton and a plain cotton muslin to make the lining so that it has some body. I plan to add snaps to the top to make a closure. The backpack will be to hold stuffed animals, etc. so it doesn't need to be so rugged.

I used it on just the lining layer but plan on adding it to the bottom panel as well next time so that it might stand on its own.
Otherwise I give this pattern a 10/10!!
We’re the handle measurements really 100cm x 12 cm?
What fabric can we use ?
@@vinabalaba5070 I used quilting cotton! But I imagine you could also use denim or recycled materials too like table cloths
Hi,I am Elea-maryam I am 11 years old and I have to say, this video has changed my life.
I have made this bag 5 times !!! I give this video 5 stars even if there was a mistake at the
bit when you are sewing the bag inner layer but the simple explanations forgive.all to say that this video has a lot more ups than downs!
Welcome~~Hello~ Shelly’s Adventure~🌸 Thank you so much for your detailed experience sharing comments~🤩✨⭐️
See you in the next tutorial video!
What's material u used?
@@sarah.mazlan 100% cotton fabric.
What was the total length of fabric used?
Thank you for the lovely tutorial. For anyone who forgets to add a turning gap, never fear. It is easy enough to go back with a seam ripper and remove stitches to make a turning gap. Flip bag out, sew up seam and you are done!
This was my first sewing project ever! Made it with thick canvas, broke a needle, extended the strap length and added a hand strap. Feeling very satisfied so thank you for the pattern and instructions!
Hey, Is the canvas fabric available on crafts store..?? Thank you for sharing 💜
You succeeded in completing your bag! Great job! See you in the next video!🦋🦋👏👏
What type of fabric you use?
Hi~Aliyah~🍀 I feel really good because you shared what you felt while watching this video You must be very proud to have completed it. Thank you for the good comments. See you in the next video~🌿🌸🌿

Hi! I was wondering how many meters of fabric did you use?
@@АлянаВанчикова-и2ъ Hey! I can't tell exactly how much now off the top of my head, but the outer layer with the pockets but without straps took half of a meter exactly, and then the lining and inside pockets are another half a meter (bcoz the inside pockets were just as big as the outside ones), and then add the straps. So I think with a meter and a half all in all you should be fine, I just broke it down if you want to make it out of different fabrics 🤗🌞

@@АлянаВанчикова-и2ъ No problem! Good luck and have fun! 🌞🍓

Could someone tell me what are the final measures? Like, height and width? And how long will be the straps for hanging?

As a beginner sewer who just bought her first sewing machine, this tutorial was amazing and I just finished my first bag! Thank you, this was so incredibly helpful and I’m incredibly happy with how it turned out for my first time sewing. 💕
May I ask how many meters of fabric did you use and which type ?
@@arya-it8px I used cotton canvas for the exterior and handles. For the interior lining, I used a regular quilting cotton. I had originally bought 2.7 meters of each fabric because I wasn’t sure which tutorial I would use so I can’t say for certain, but I would say I used roughly 2.2 meters for the exterior and the handles, then I used roughly 1 meter for interior lining. I’m sorry I’m not entirely sure how much I used, my country uses the imperial system for measurements .
Its fine , thanks for sharing 💜💜
Just made that tote bag, it's my first ever sewing project. I'm a complete beginner, I made a lot of mistakes in the process trying to figure out everything for the first time. It turned out soooo pretty, I love it! This video is perfect to start and make some cool projects, I'll check the others!

You guys have obviously never seen a good diy video before. This is the worst ever! Where are you people from?
I just finish mine a couple of minutes ago, I'm so proud of the bag that I made thanks to you, I used 3 different fabrics, one for the upper part, another for the bottom and another for the lining, it's a very flexible design that you can combine with different colors and textures
I will follow more tutorials from you, thanks
Thank you so much! Mine turned out fantastic! Note - I did add an "X-box" to the straps to secure them in place, I recommend!
First time sewing and this video was very easy to follow and turned out amazing. I added a small embroidery piece on the pocket before sewing to make it more personalized and it worked perfectly.
For anyone wondering I made mine a bit bigger for personal preferences but I ended up making it with around 1.5 yards of cloth using some extra outlining all the pieces before cutting so I was able to use most of the cloth without some extra(not much)
Did you use the 1.5 yards for the outside and the liner of the bag?
In order to turn the bag, leave a gap on ONE SIDE OF THE LINING BAG. That way you can reach in this gap and turn it all right side out. She shows this in the video, but never mentions it directly.
yep.... I saw no one talking about it.... really weird

This is exactly how every sewing tutorial should be done. Amazing. I have no questions at all.
2 hours in and I'm just at 1:50 :D
Edit 1: next day and I'm at 4:03 I have made only the outer part and it took me 3 hours. (As a beginner its lowkey hard)

Sad story: i don't have enough fabbric to cut the intern part, will have to find something else
Just did the rim of the pockets! It was a bit tricky because the corner was getting stuked in the machine (idk how to explain, but it would stuck and not moving as the needle proceeded) but they could be waaay worse lol
