I have a question: when you cut the pattern, do you need to leave some extra space for where you're going to be sewing? if not, where do I sew it, to make the right size? because I imagine that if you sew too far from the edge the garment will be tighter... or not? Sorry, I'm just learning and I still have never sewn anything!
This is a great question! What you’re referring to is called seam allowance (SA). The distance you sew from the edge of the fabric. The pattern instructions should tell you how much SA is included. If none is included, then you can add some in yourself. But most standard patterns include a 1.5cm SA. In the video when I mark in the labels on the pattern I should have also marked in what the given SA was to make it clear. Sorry about that! But the pattern instructions should tell you, and sticking to the SA will give you a true-to-size fit! Hope this helps!
@@VintageThirsty Thank you very much! This helps a lot, because in videos I always hear about seam allowance but I never understand how to calculate them or if they are included in the pattern! Thank you so much, you've been extremely helpful!

I bought my 1st as a Kenmore from Sears, but my second one was special...from a retired seamstress who obviously had an amazing life and career. I wish I had gotten to know her more, she was in her 80s-90s years ago when I met her, unforgettable woman! Now, I have a great classic Janome I bought in '02 that's still on warranty. This is exactly what I needed in my life. I’ve been so scared of using patterns for so long that I struggle through making my own and it’s always unnecessarily complicated hahaha. Thank you for the thoroughness and encouragement!! I’m totally gonna try this 🥰
I love how soft and clear your voice is. Even though I have the captions running, I love how you enunciate. Being deaf/hard of hearing, this is key. I also love how you use your hands and how you clearly walk us through the lesson. I look forward to learning more from you!
You are a gem. I’m starting sewing for the first time at age 42 and my mom bought me a cute little handheld sewing stitcher and in the first day I bled it and and clogged it into the teeth lol so far I’m doing well.
So imagine learning how to sew during elementary and high school by watching mom and making a few things like a skirt, straight paints... then you decide to start sewing again as a more mature woman. My mom never traced the pattern. She laid it out and we would pin it but follow along the size we were making, never cutting the pattern itself. I don’t recall how we pinned it so I came here. I’m not sure I’m willing to trace and cut out a template first 😩
What I learned in school was to put the pins parallel to the lines of the pattern and cut as close to the pins as possible (assuming the pattern includes seam allowance). We'd pin both the pattern and the fabric like 1-2 millimeters inside of the line that designates the size we'd be making. Then we would gently peel back the edge of the pattern until we reached the pin line and would cut along the line. If you want, you can sort of redrape the pattern over your shears so that you can see the pattern lines and notches a bit better. I hope that made sense/was helpful!
Hi. I am professoanal pattern maker of any type of clothing design. We provide pattern making services. if your need this service please contact with me.thanks
I learned to pin the pattern directly to the fabric also... pins horizontal to the pattern edge, but the way she does it allows you to trace it onto paper in the size you want thus maintaining the original pattern in case you need to size up or down for future garments
My grandmother recently gave me her collection of sewing patterns she’s kept from around the 1960s-70s, and I had no clue how to follow them, so Thankyou so much for this video!
I've never in life touched a needle outside of art class, so I really appreciate this tutorial!! I'm looking to start plush making rather than garments but all of this is so interesting! Your voice and demeanor is also very patient and not really intimidating so for what it's worth that also helps!
We had to learn sewing in middle school and I hated it. I thought it was boring but now I realize how cool it is to be able to make your own chlothes. I would like to learn sewing again but I don't have a sewing machine. I was thinking of learning to sew by hand and if I learn the basics and start to like it I will get a machine. My grandmother used to make a living making chlothes so I know she will help me learn again if I ask her. Next time I visit hole I will definetly ask for some tips from her!❤
You’re just a doll! Thank you for posting this! I’ve wanted to learn to sew forever and when my granny passed on, I made up my mind to learn. She could sew beautifully. I just learned how to operate my sewing machine lmbo. So, I’m very very green. I have an apron pattern of my granny’s and now I can understand it too lol. You’re pleasant to listen to and you get to the point. So, if you wanted to post a ton of tutorial videos for beginners, I believe people would watch. Just sayin’. 😊😎
THANK YOU! I’ve had patterns and a machine for yonks but couldn’t find a video that was comprehensive enough for a total beginner when it comes to actually reading and using the patterns I have. Thank you for this it’s a life saver!
Omg GOD BLESS YOU 🙏🏾I been struggling to learn this forever, you are a great teacher! Now , I feel like I actually understand what to do with a pattern & not feel intimidated by the sewing language. Ahh I'm so excited to get my pieces assembled 📐✂️
The pants turned out super cute! Very well explained. My only request would be to have a visual when explaining the “grain line”. It’s probably pretty simple and I may be making it more complicated than it is but perhaps a ‘correct’ example. Then, an ‘incorrect’ example as a visual -if you would be up for it next time. Thank you 🙏😊
It is simpler than it made to be...the grainline is a guide to positioning your fabric, so you're not cutting on the bias (diagonal to fabric threads). So if you look closely at the fabric weave and see the cross threads, position the pattern so it's parallel to the fabric grain (usually parallel to the selvedge edge).
I’m not doing anything till I catch up on your videos. In just two minutes I learned more than any video 😩 Wish I wouldn’t have cut my patterns to my size now. Lessons learned thanks so much 🎯Great video
I just needed to say “ thank you” so much for your help! I just started making a dress with my first pattern and I was very intimidated! Your video was so helpful. If there’s anything I still had questions about, it was the type of stitching mentioned…baste, slip stitch, etc. I just don’t know all of the terminology yet.
Ahh ur an angel!! I’m in fashion class at school and I’ve always had a passion for fashion. I started hand sewing when I was 10 and I made a bag. Now that im in fashion class, I’ve made a couple of other things. My mom bought me my very own sewing machine, and im sooo excited. As soon as I get the chance, I can’t wait to start experimenting. Ahhh. I can save so much money, and suprise my family and friends!! So excited
Thank you so much for this video ! I got into sewing recently and getting started with actual patterns felt really daunting but you really cleared things up for me !
I actually learned a few things my husband found this for me and suggested I watch it. So I did. Thank you. I love your accent. Also I'm a little less scared of patterns now.
I am 38 and have never used a sewing machine in my life. However, I yearn to sew! This is my first sewing video ever. Before this video, I didn't even know whether or not to cut out the fabric at the same time as the pattern, or cut out a pattern at all. I didn't know a pattern displayed different sizes of the same style, or how to use a rotary wheel or the fabric- aerator- pizzacutter pokeywheel. This video was a huge help in learning new sewing skills.
My mum make her patterns from old newspapers, I asked her to teach me sew but teaching is not her greatest strength so here I am looking for videos. I did not know you can buy patterns
I’ve been so intimidated by patterns although I’ve been sewing for probably 15 years. I’m finally trying to learn and this is such a helpful video. Thank you
Please, make more videos like this for beginners like me. It is such a help! Also, I was eyeing similar kind of pants so now I know where to find good pattern and start sewing...soon. Could you make more videos on sewing terminology, please? Your voice is super calming and I love your jokes...
Thank you for making this video! I used it to hem my linen suit trousers the day before I had to wear them to my friends' wedding. I'd never hemmed before so I didn't think I'd be able to learn it in time, but it turned out great and I looked much smarter than if I'd left the legs unhemmed. I don't use a sewing machine yet so I appreciate you showed how to do it cleanly by hand. My mom used to hem all my pants for me growing up, so I'll definitely be hemming more pants and shorts for myself after this gave me confidence to!
I came here coz Jusuf recommended me to watch your videos im interested to sew my own clothes i want to create my own wardrobe. Diving into DIY world. Thank you!!! I hope i won't get lost when i start to sew. 😄
Absolutely brilliant . just bought my first sewing machine , an old singer 201k, just like my Mum had. looking bewilderingly at my first pattern . Now it makes sense to me, many thanks.
Even if just for the info on how to trace, this video is worth all the "likes". Being a beginner, I've recently bought tracing paper, which I now suspect was not the cheapest, or most practical, option.
Thank you for explaining everything super thoroughly while also being really funny and encouraging. I definitely plan on sewing something up to work with the inspiration I got from this video
I’ve been sewing for a while now, two tips I learned from this video will be a game changer for me. 1. Using a tracing wheel over the pattern onto tracing paper in stead of copying with pen and paper OVER the pattern. (That was like genius, idk why I didn’t think of that! My measurements are going to be more accurate 🤣) 2. Folding the fabric and cutting the fabric out at the same time to get two accurate pieces. 🤯 like I’ve been trying to get my measurements as accurate has possible and those two tips just got me closer! 🤣 thank you !
Thats the beauty of it all. We keep learning new things. I've been terrified of patterns, I see them as Egyptian hieroglyphs😩. But I think I can now face them🔥

Thank you for the tips on saving the pattern! That was such a concern of mine, granted I got mine on sale, but still. I wanted to get the most use out of it as I possible can!
You are God sent. I wish I could give you an award. Thank you for sharing. This is more than beginner friendly. This is amazing. Thank you for taking your time to share with us. ❤
New sub here! We love a good technic vid! I just want to add some of my thoughts…. Cutting the pattern is not a problem in modern sewing as you normally buy a downloadable file that you keep on you computer to print over and over again. When it comes to buying printed patterns (like vintage patterns) that’s wise to trace it and maintain the original piece intact. (Those are expensive and mostly unique). And for those who gonna trace it on another paper and do not have a poking device you can use a thinner transparent paper (frequently used for pattern making) that you can lay over the original pattern and just trace over it it. 😘 Ps: I looooovew the pants 😻😻😻
This video was PERFECT. Super easy to follow, fun and informative. Really hope your fashion journey has flourished! Sad to see there hasn't been a new video in a while 🧡
Finally a clear, detailed explanation. Thank you! I'm really into the idea of sewing clothes but I need tutorials that dumb it down like I'm a child. Please teach us more.
I have been sewing since I was 13 and now in my 70s I find this video simply delightful and thorough. Well done! Always great to review basics at any stage. I also am disappointed with the US pattern makers, the pattern paper is flimsy and tissue paper thin, perhaps trying to make them as inexpensively as possible. However with the cost of patterns, they really need to step up to the European standards of better quality paper.
I'm still quite a sewing novice, and the grain line is the thing that always messes me up and leads to my outfits draping and fitting all weird. Thank you for the tip!
I found this video on a whim. I was having a hard time finding a channel that suited me and spoke my language. Some other channels aren't as beginner-friendly as they claim, and use words for things that I'm not familiar with (and force me to have to hurriedly google whatever it is in the background). I find some of the other channels to also be a little condescending, and no one has fun with what they're teaching. This is my new favorite channel. I love your kindness and the way you explain things (thank you, by the way, for showing me what an awl is!). I am very much looking forward to other projects of yours. I watched the pleated skirt one and for once I didn't feel overwhelmed; it made me feel like I can actually do it! You are the best channel on here, in my opinion 🙂
I’ve only just found your channel and I’ve subscribed. It’s so lovely to find a Scots lady making such great quality videos. Your instructions were so clear and precise. I’m in Cumbria and aiming towards making or refashioning my who,e wardrobe towards a vintage style. I’ll watch out for your future videos. Your palazzo pants are gorgeous and very flattering.
Thank you so much this is very helpful! I love your channel, I have already gotten so much inspiration on patterns I want to try. Also your jokes aren't terrible.
I started sewing 55 years ago, when the only information I had was the sewing pattern itself. I envy modern girls who have access to so many books and videos at their fingertips. Trial and error is a very inefficient learning method.

@@JDlovescats979 Yes! That's what my mother always did.
Hi.
I am professoanal pattern maker of any type of clothing design. We provide pattern making services. if your need this service please contact with me.thanks
Actually we learned in Home Ec.
I love her videos because she’s so funny but she’s teaching us
this is exactly what i needed! I just bought a pattern for wide leggings, but its hella confusing, thank you!!
If only all videos could be so succinct and informative in such a short amount of time. Thanks.
@@5DNRG So if you're cutting twill would you want it to appear diagonal (while actually being parallel)?
I’m not doing anything till I catch up on your videos. In just two minutes I learned more than any video 😩 Wish I wouldn’t have cut my patterns to my size now. Lessons learned thanks so much 🎯Great video
I'm generally a wood/metal working maker, and am just taking baby steps into this form of making - and this is freaking brilliant.
My patterns and fabric should be arriving anyday now!! I'm sew excited to get started 😛
Love how you explain multi-sized patterns & how to use them. Thank you for very educational/informative video. I've been sewing for the longest time!
I've watched about 10 different videos on reading a pattern and you're the first one to talk about the symbols! OMG thank you!!!
We need more videos like this! You're so kind and I really like the way you explained it to us! 🌸
I got 3 lovely pages of info written down thanks to this video.. and now I'm feeling a lot more confident in trying new things
I just love you lol your too cute! Love the accent!
Hello Elizabeth
My mum make her patterns from old newspapers, I asked her to teach me sew but teaching is not her greatest strength so here I am looking for videos. I did not know you can buy patterns
I came for the info I stayed for the accent .
Hello Petra
Thank you for making this video! I used it to hem my linen suit trousers the day before I had to wear them to my friends' wedding. I'd never hemmed before so I didn't think I'd be able to learn it in time, but it turned out great and I looked much smarter than if I'd left the legs unhemmed.
I don't use a sewing machine yet so I appreciate you showed how to do it cleanly by hand. My mom used to hem all my pants for me growing up, so I'll definitely be hemming more pants and shorts for myself after this gave me confidence to!
"Its like a pizza cutter, but for your fabric."😆 my favorite line of the video. Nice pants! Thanks for the info!
I came here coz Jusuf recommended me to watch your videos im interested to sew my own clothes i want to create my own wardrobe. Diving into DIY world. Thank you!!! I hope i won't get lost when i start to sew. 😄
Those pants fit you so well!! Dang
I can't believe you are the same age as my little brother
You are so mature and knowledgable, thank you for the brilliant information
i needed this video this week, impeccable timing
Absolutely brilliant . just bought my first sewing machine , an old singer 201k, just like my Mum had. looking bewilderingly at my first pattern . Now it makes sense to me, many thanks.
This is the kind of clear and simple pattern guide I’ve been searching for! 😅 thank you for laying things out so well for beginners, great video! 👏🏻👏🏻
Alexandra....SO RIGHT!!!! The INSPIRATION she is giving us!!!!!
I’ve been sewing for a while now, two tips I learned from this video will be a game changer for me.
1. Using a tracing wheel over the pattern onto tracing paper in stead of copying with pen and paper OVER the pattern. (That was like genius, idk why I didn’t think of that! My measurements are going to be more accurate 🤣)
2. Folding the fabric and cutting the fabric out at the same time to get two accurate pieces. 🤯 like I’ve been trying to get my measurements as accurate has possible and those two tips just got me closer! 🤣 thank you !
Omg!!! 8 years of sewing and I’ve been tracing wrong the entire time 🥴😩😭😭😤😂😂 I would just make my own. “Perks” of being self taught 😕 lol
Thats the beauty of it all. We keep learning new things. I've been terrified of patterns, I see them as Egyptian hieroglyphs😩. But I think I can now face them🔥
Well done! Bravo! 👏 I myself am a highly advanced sewer. However, I have recommended that beginners watch this particular video in order to diffuse their fear or intimidation of patterns and 🧵 sewing projects. You did a fantastic job. Thank you for sharing. God Bless you and yours, now and always. 👍👏💕🕊🙏😇🤗😘🥰🥳
Thank you so much for compiling such a thoughtful instructions video on sewing! As a beginner who wished to go to fashion school to learn all about the details in clothes and sewing tricks, I find this video so helpful😭💚 Your videos always show clear and step by step tutorial without being too confusing, and I love it. Hoping to see your channel grow!
Found this today, absolutely told me all I needed (never really sewed before). Thanks so much!
Oh My Goodness! Thank you, young lady, for this exellent video. If there were an award or 'openings' or 'video intros' This would win! I have been searching or this topic! You've given me hope!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! Please keep these excellent videos coming!
Hello, your video was very clear, and yes, I am inspired to restart my sewing journey. Three years ago, I started but pressed pause because of grad school. Now, I am preparing myself to get back to sewing and looking forward to make my own clothes :)
What about seam allowances?
I think this will encourage a lot of new sewing enthusiasts!
Ps: I looooovew the pants 😻😻😻
Your videos are super helpful and so well edited . Keep it going girl! Love your accent 🥰🥰
I'm still quite a sewing novice, and the grain line is the thing that always messes me up and leads to my outfits draping and fitting all weird. Thank you for the tip!
I‘m so happy I found your channel. Thanks for those entertaining and helpful videos. 😊
Hello Celia
They way you explained was very detailed, I am a newbie to this whole sewing world so you made me more comfortable with your suggestions.
Thank you so much this is very helpful! I love your channel, I have already gotten so much inspiration on patterns I want to try. Also your jokes aren't terrible.
I have at least 10 patterns that I’m imitated about. But your explanation he as shined more light on the subject. Thanks for explaining
I started sewing 55 years ago, when the only information I had was the sewing pattern itself. I envy modern girls who have access to so many books and videos at their fingertips. Trial and error is a very inefficient learning method.
