Lucius Julius Caesar, Proquaestor 46 BCE

- The only member of his family to side with Pompey, the younger Lucius Julius Caesar was the black sheep of his family, someone who was treated as a joke in our sources, and the victim of an unsolved murder. Here, I argue that he may have been the victim of a hatchet job (in our sources) and that his murder may have had larger political ramifications than are immediately apparent.

“I’m a Roman history enthousiast” “Oh really? Name 5 famous Romans” “Julius Caesar” “That’s on me, I set the bar too low”
So many Romans, so many permutations of similar names. I really enjoy this series. It really helps one get a granular sense of the many who played their small role in the drama of history.
It shows how many chefs were in the kitchen, at a bare minimum.
Good choice man. Diving deep into the sub gens caesarii of the gens julii. My favorite family other then the gens valerii
Well, well.
I never knew Lucius the younger existed.
Sad that everything we know about him is coloured by his cousin's disdain.
Been waiting for your upload. TY. Best Rome History commentator on UA-cam!!
As always the best Greek and Roman history on UA-cam
Thersites, you should do manius Valerius Corvus who fought the Gaullic warrior with the help of his pet raven in front of both opposing armies…
I'll look into him.
Interesting the familiar ties in a civil war! Nice find in Caesars cousin! Good historical research.
Hey Thersites, if you need help, make the next video about some obscure unknown dude related to Caesar
I'm following that advice right now. I have a video coming out on Saturday morning covering another second cousin of Caesar.
That Tony khan picture just makes me cackle. I don’t care for him or his company. Great video as always, good to see another pro wrestling fan
Your videos are so relaxing
Cudos for enlightening us sir!
If he was just a self interested little weasel he would surely not have taken a principled stand against Caesar in the first place.
He maybe was a “stupid” self interested little weasel.
To be fair, we don't know enough about Lucius to say what principles he held. Also, there were so few principled people in the late Republic that I assume that someone is ethically limited unless there is a specific reason for thinking otherwise.
good stuff
Hold up, so Lucius was the son of Caesar’s (the dictator) first Cousin, right? Or am I getting that wrong?
That's right. He is the son of Lucius Julius Caesar, the Consul of 64.
@@ThersitestheHistorian so wouldn’t that just make Lucius the Nephew of Gaius?
A Nephew is the son of a brother, not a cousin.
@@wjd23104 and also a cousin of the same generation, all cultures except Germanic ones work like this
Love the content. Have you thought about doing anymore streams recapping/following events from the war in Ukraine?
It's something I'd like to hear y'alls take on
I'll hit up the gang and see if anyone is down for it. It will have to wait until the second week of July since I am going to be busy all of next week.
Bahaha Tony Khan
Why are you using the acronym BCE? Before Christian Era?
BCE stands for before the common era
@@williamboisdenghien2849 obviously but I’m just gonna go ahead and propagate that it’s Before Christian Era so we can move back to saying anno Domini.
@@MagnumGreenPanther it started out of respect for Jews, in addition to the problem of the birth year of Jesus posing problems. Amusingly in French I saw it very rarely in print and while I understand the reason why it exists I only use it in English
