    I stole the car from my wife and made her walk home from work ( not really...lol ) and took a 1 3/4 hour drive to Cow Bay to purposely shoot some video of local surfers. I had never been there before and didn't know what to expect except that MagicSeaWeed had predicted good conditions for that Friday. What I found was a gem of a surf spot with multiple entry points along the bay area in which to surf and a boatload of awesome surfers ripping it up!!!
    IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL THE SURFERS WITH WHOM I MET THAT DAY:
    First of all, I want to say that is was sincerely an honor, pleasure and privilege to meet all the surfers that I met that day. I want to thank each and every one of you who let me get up in their grill and in their personal space to ask surfing questions and to let me chat with them. You couldn't have been more friendly to this 54 year old outsider who is just learning how to surf and trying to make some fun UA-cam videos. Thanks again for your kindness and hospitality! ;)
    Secondly, I want to apologize as I think I pushed my little waterproof tough Olympus TG-4 camera way past it's limits that day so please forgive me and my camera for all of the out of focus, grainy and jittery clips and weird audio noises as I tried my hardest ( and so did the camera ) to do you guys justice and get some decent shots of all of you surfing that day. Oh yeah, I was surrounded by flies most of that day too in case you're wondering what all the black things flying around were.
    I found out after getting home and looking at the clips on a full screen, that DIGITAL ZOOM is a no-no in video production...causes grainy shots! I also had a digital compression setting in my camera set to a position for quantity of shots and not quality so that may have affected the quality of clips I took as well...can you tell that I'm new at this? In any case, I did get a lot of shots of various surfers who were there that day and I managed, after many hours of editing over 100 clips...to make this video. I tried my best with what I've got to work with...
    I hope you enjoy what I have presented to you. I also hope that you won't mind if I come up again some time in the future to shoot more surfing video. I had an awesome day with you all and I hope you enjoyed the day too...it sure looked like a good one from my point of view!!!
    Sincerely, John Egan ;)

Stoked and thanks for the support ;) Cheers, John ;) P.S. HI there Rogue Wave Surfboard Repair, Thanks for watching the video. I was stoked to get in on this action as it was one of my very first surf videos. It would be nice to someday ride waves like that but I'm still working on little 3 footers...lol! I only get out about half a dozen days a season if I'm lucky. Looked like a lot of work to me to get back to the point though...but great payback once you get there. I'd love to get back to catch some more action one of these days but I haven't been doing much camera work lately. Cheers, John 🤙

      @@Rogue_wave I just took up surfing at age 54 so the learning curve is a little steep especially when I only get out a few days a year but it's great fun and very challenging. I have not been dragging my camera gear to the beach recently as I'm trying to concentrate on learning how to surf more than messing around with cameras. I am getting close to the point where I'm thinking of bringing out the cameras again. My local break, where I usually shoot video, doesn't get huge waves like in this video but they are still fun. Who knows, I might shoot another video before the end of my season...stay tuned. 😎

      Hi Lucas, at this break you can walk back to the point on the rocky beach if you want to. The area is popular as it's right outside of our capital city of Halifax. A little further down the road is Lawrenctown Beach...where it all started here in Nova Scotia. I shot a quick video there too on my way back from a sesh on another gorgeous beach called Martinique. Here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/__aOPpYGt1I/v-deo.html&ab_channel=JohnEgan. Cheers, John ;)

      I was gonna ask if you surfed and you have answered my question. Are you still surfing these days? Yeah, the water is cold up here. I'm gonna get a pool thermometer to keep track of the water temps for viewers ( and myself ) when I go surfing. Good info to know for what wetsuit to wear if you have more than one too. Thanks for watching the video! Cheers, John ;)

I was just up to the "city" ( Halifax ) the other day and stopped at a camera shop. I can get a telephoto lens for my camera...might be a way to improve my close ups in the future. We'll see how the job hunt goes and I'll see if I can't pick a telephoto lens up sometime in the near future. Thanks for pumping up my "views" count bro! ;) Cheers, John ;)

      Hiya magic cheesball, sorry for the late reply but I just got a new job and my grand daughter just had her 1st birthday party...blah, blah, blah so I'm finally just getting the time to check and see what's been going on in the cyber world and this was my first chance to get back to you ;) Anyhow, thanks for the comment and yes Nova Scotia is a beautiful place especially the little spots like Cow Bay dotted all around the coast! Yeah, I agree...a lot of those guys had some really long mellow rides, eh? It was a gorgeous day with a number of the surfers in bare feet and no gloves. The surfers were wearing anything from 5/4/3's to 3/2's and the water was around 15°C/59°F. Cheers, John ;)

      hi john thanks for the reply back and congrats on the new job! 59° isn't as cold as i thought it would be i could survive that possibly ha. coldest i have been in here in Florida was around 64° to 65° in February so not to far off . it must be icebergs in the water there in February ha .

    Hey John, Love the videos you post. My friend and I (from Massachusetts) are planning on driving up to Nova Scotia in May to explore the south coast. Do you have any tips for surf spots / places to camp out? anything you can pass along is much appreciated
    - Ryan

    • @funafter5081
      @funafter5081  6 років тому +2

      Hi Ryan, I am so stoked that you and your friend are coming up to Nova Scotia...that's awesome! Thanks for the kind word about my videos too. Wow, you kinda caught me off guard with this question as I am just getting into surfing myself and I actually haven't even got my own gear yet but I will pass along what I know. The popular spots are Lawrencetown and Cow Bay which are close to Dartmouth ( Halifax ) and as you go southwest from there I guess the next most popular spot would be Western Head just outside of Liverpool. What I would suggest is that you hook up with some surfers at Ltown or Cow Bay or surf shops near there and they will be able to fill you in on the other spots as they'd have more local knowledge than I do at this point. Another spot where you might be able to get some good surf info is at White Point Beach Resort as they have a crew that teaches surf lessons there and if there is somebody at the shop, I'm sure they'd be able to give you some advice on some surf spots in the southwest area of NS too. You can also surf at their beach as well if the surf is up and it's close to Western Head so if one place isn't firing the other might be. Also, there is a Nova Scotia Webcam at White Point which can give you a hint of the surf along the shore here at: www.novascotiawebcams.com/en/webcams/white-point-beach-resort/
      Here's another fun thing you can do: go on Google maps, in satellite mode, and look for white crescent beaches facing the ocean on the southwestern shores of the province, and you will probably find a place where you can drive up to an isolated beach and have the whole place to yourselves. I do have a buddy who is in my first surf video and his name is Brian Carey and he makes custom wooden surfboards. His Facebook site is: facebook.com/Aeonsurf/ and if you contacted him and told him I referred you to him, he may be able to let you know more info on the local surf scene. He's the guy who gave me my first two surf lessons and is in the first 3 surf videos that I posted on UA-cam. If you want to check surf conditions at Mavillette Beach, check out this webcam:
      www.novascotiawebcams.com/en/webcams/mavillette-beach/
      It's more of a beginner beach and it's where I plan on learning the ropes of this great sport.
      Now about camping...I used to camp at a provincial park called Graves Island which is on the south shore near Chester and it opens on May 18. It has nice facilities and would be halfway between the city ( Halifax/Dartmouth ) and Liverpool. If you want to stay closer to the southern end of the province there is also another provincial park called Rissers Beach and it opens on May 18 as well. It's just outside of Bridgewater if you're looking at a map. There are other provincial parks along the coast but I haven't stayed at them so I don't know what they are like. One example is Thomas Raddall provincial park but I haven't stayed there yet and it's possible you might be able to surf very close to that park too if the conditions are right.
      I wish I knew more in depth about the local surf scene for you as I would really like you to have a great experience here, but from what I have personally experienced with Nova Scotia surfers so far, is that they are very friendly and helpful about giving you advice on great places to surf. When I shot both of my Cow Bay videos last year I talked to a lot of them and they were very kind to me as a noob and an outsider and if you are packing a surfboard and a wetsuit and bump into a local surfer I'm sure they'd hook you up. Give my another year and I would be able to fill you in much better as I plan on getting more into surfing this year and I ask a lot of questions when I meet local surfers but as for now, that's probably about it... I wish you and your friend the very best in your travels, and as Ben Gravy says, I hope it's TOTALLY NUKING when you get here! Cheers, John ;)

    Hi John! Great Cow Bay video. Was wondering if this was all of your footage or if you had some more clips that didn’t make the video? I was out there this day and would love to see any other clips you might have of me!

    • @funafter5081
      @funafter5081  7 років тому

      Hi Claire, Thanks for the kind comment and yes, this was all the footage that I got that day except for out of focused clips. I was trying to shoot whoever was up on their board and it was hard to catch everybody all the time. Near the end of the day I was turning my camera off to save battery and I may have missed some rides while the camera was off and not ready to shoot. Oh man...now I'm really bummed that I missed you as I did see a couple of ladies out their surfing, but I'm afraid to say I didn't catch you girls up on your boards :( Were you surfing inside? If you were, I might have missed you too as I was positioned to get most of the rides from the outside because I don't have much zoom on my camera. Also from where I was positioned, if you were riding inside, I would have only caught the back of your head as you rode away from me. I'm so sorry dear! I'll be back again someday and maybe I'll catch you riding again. If you see me up there again, please feel free to punch me in the nose for missing your rides...seriously! Cheers, John ;)
