Three and a half years since that fateful Champions League final Loris Karius has still not re-established himself as the goalkeeper that was once promised.
But where is he now? What happened to him since that game? Why didn’t any of the subsequent loan moves work?

Manscaped new slogan for Tifo videos:
"we handle balls much better than Karius"
you're welcome, I'll be awaiting my royalty cheques.
I'd say it was in rather poor taste
and great placement - as it shows up at the end of a video based on Karius, who spent more time in front of the mirror than training grounds.
I'll never forget my dad's words when Bale scored his second "Oh my god...his career is over (sigh)..." 😔
I can almost picture it bro.. really is sad
ya...just can't seem to find an amicable solution for him...perhaps play him in cup games to get some gametime like how chelsea did with arizzabalaga and he's doing better...but ya can't forget the goals that were let in on that day. they say he was concussed though?
Brutal world of top flight.
He puts the Karius in precarious, am I right? ayyyy
@@_ace786 Well, Ramos (because who else) put an elbow strike to Karius' head in one corner kick situation prior to Bale's second goal. Whether or not this caused concussion I, of course, cannot say.
Was really hoping he would get back on his feet at Union. I think you have to have a certain confidence to be a goalkeeper, and he lost it that night in Kyiv.
I play goalkeeper in Sunday league and I just can’t imagine. Mistakes in front of my friends is bad enough. I feel like I’d want to quit, but I’ve never dedicated my whole life to a sport. What a horrible position to be in.
I think it's also to do with your mental state and how much trust you feel. I just remember how Kepa completely crumbled under Lampard as Lampard made it pretty clear he did not trust him, plus his GF broke up with him and he just looked a shell of a man.
Luckily for Kepa, it seems Tuchel is helping to restore that trust and tbf Karius could probably do with a manager doing the same to him. May be worth him going to somewhere like MLS and get away from the bad media attention and have a manger over there treat him with some trust that he just won't get over here in Europe after what happened in the champs league
@@joshbrown2217 Lampard can be blamed for a lot of things but Kepa's form? Nah, you're having a laugh. The truth is that Kepa was never good enough for a club like Chelsea and we were stupid to pay 72 million for that. Marina probably still has nightmares about that.
Kepa's form had nothing to do with Lampard, he was awful under Sarri as well and it's not like he's done anything great under Tuchel either apart from saving a couple of penalties.
In fact, Lampard was quite patient with Kepa in the beginning and even defended him the press. But Kepa put in stinker after stinker. A manager cannot be blamed for a keeper fumbling the ball out of his hands into the goal or just standing still as it rolls past him. Heck, a 50 year old Willy Caballero did a better job in the nets when Kepa was dropped so Lampard can hardly be blamed.
We have Edouard Mendy now who's one of the best keepers on the world and a rock solid wall. Thankfully the shambles that is Kepa is long in the past. Doesn't change the fact that we threw 70 million pounds down the drain but oh well.
No Union fans wanted him. He was given one chance against Paderborn in the Pokal, and turned in two shots that any pro 'keeper would've saved. He didn't deserve another chance after getting Union knocked out.
@@areebsiddiqui758 Kepa was never good enough to be 72 million euros worthy. That's a fact but it went downhill cause of some stinkers which led to poor confidence then Lampard came in and he did Kepa no favors. Confidence is huge and when you were dealing with the stuff Kepa was dealing with, you will be crushed.
His entire situation got worse when Liverpool got rid of him and replaced him with an actual world class goalkeeper and redeemed themselves by winning the CL the following year.
Yup. It almost proved how a "good" keeper made all the difference for Liverpool. And how Karius simply wasn't good enough to be that guy

Another option is to lower his wage demands and play as starter for a top 2nd division club to win promotion. Any 1st division club is going to be reluctant to take a risk on Karius. The path to redemption is hard. So he needs to swallow a bit of pride to start over from the bottom. So he could rise again to the top.

Well, things have happened to him. Obviously.
That also happens with every Man Utd player except their "gods" Bruno and Ronaldo. This just frustrates me as people never see the good things that Maguire does and just see the mistakes.

Nope, I still remember that Alisson's point blank save against Napoli.
As a former goalkeeper myself, who quit practice because I couldn't handle the pressure and bullying from team mates, I feel really bad for him. Gollie is the hardest position in my opinion, almost nobody remembers you in victory, but everyone reminds your mistakes. I hope he can find redemption, but most importantly, peace. It wasn't just one game. As a United fan, I can remember laughing at Liverpool a lot for having a fumbling goalkeeper at that time. Like the video said, he was already making a lot of mistakes before the final and Klopp gave him many chances. This is quite similar to what Ferguson did to his goalkeeper Jim Leighton back in 1990 when he had a horrific FA Cup final. Like Karius, Jim was upset too after the game, and his career and confidence never recovered. There's always a point where every manager must make brave decisions for the better of the team.
@@sususegar Karius was already really sloppy, like vs Arsenal at Home in 2016/17 and Roma 2017/18 1st leg at Home, he nearly cost us. I still appreciate his service, but it was time to move on, gutted for the lad as he couldn't make his career.
@@ynwafanmrks1817 Yup, that's exactly what I mean. On the same token, United have this issue with several players right now who aren't punished for poor performances ie. reports of offering new contracts worth 300k for Maguire and 400k for Pogba
@@sususegar You guys are terribly mismanaged. Someone like Zidane would turn your team around in no time. Ole is too much of a soft guy and is just terrible. There has to be managerial changes and a CDM for Man Utd immediately if they were to progress in the future

Summer's long over, there won't be a new CDM soon and no one will sell quality players in January. I'm already writing off this season, Ole will be lucky to even finish top 4.
I'm not really keen on Zidane, and he himself said before he's not interested to go to England.
The story of Karius is literally heartbreaking in my opinion. Everyone should try to remember that up until his mistakes at Liverpool he had put everything in his life aside for his football career, like all pros do. At Liverpool he did the same and all the fashion & holidays things are just a way to cool down for himself and to not get overwhelmed.
After all that a few moments basically broke his career. You can say what you want about the move to besiktas and Union or the declined offer from Basel, but that would still add up to only a few mistakes over multiple years.
The career of a goalkeeper can be very brittle, which I see a lot since I am a goalie trainer myself.
Therefore I really try to remind people of the impact they can have when you hammer on a mistake of a goalkeeper, it can be unjustly harsh. I always tell my goalies to stand back up, focus on the next ball; and I think people around them should help them to do so.
So with Karius all the media, the fans, the managements and everything else made his life worse than it should have been.
Long story, this was just me, someone who loves goalkeeping, writing his thoughts. Be kind to goalies please :)
Well said!
Well said man
Could you please provide some insights regarding reflexes and spatial awareness? I love football, but often find myself playing as goal keeper because I can’t stand my goal keeper letting in silly goals. People say I have quick reflexes, but I beg to differ because I have general anxiety disorder, where when I am out of my house, I do not put down my defenses (psychological and physical). Therefore, would it be a combination of various factors including reading player body language helps me at being a goal keeper? Hard to say really? Bit of a philosophical question.
Oh please, I’m 5’4 and not nearly as rich, talented or good looking as Karius and I’m supposed to feel sorry for him now?? Many gk’s make mistakes and bounce back. Kepa was terrible for Chelsea, but he’s stayed firm. The mistake Karius made for the 1st goal when he literally passed the ball to Benzema is absolutely unforgivable.
@travis you are of course entitled to your own opinion, but I do think you are mixing up things. You speak of height, looks etc. while I speak of a career in sports and of goalkeepers in general.
I would never call anything unforgivable, but that is just because there is a certain finality in it which I dislike. If you want to see things black and white, be my guest.
Unfortunately the reality is that one or two small mistake by a goalkeeper in most cases means they had a bad game. It takes more than one or two inconsistent passes for a midfielder to get criticized.
Yes but inconsistent passes don’t really lead to a goal being conceded most of the time, a mistake from a goalkeeper normally does.
Difference is the goal keeper has 1 job, keep that ball out of the net at all costs. A midfielder has multiple roles, passing, pressing, tackling, marking, tracking back. If the GK can’t do his basics like stay on his line or catch instead of punch he’s no good. Once that doubts in his mind it’s almost impossible to get rid of.
And? That’s what they sign up for. Can’t be sad for people lol.

Perhaps Klopp's only mistake in that season was to not substitute Karius after Ramos went for him. Playing on with a concussion might work in a pre-season friendly, but it's not the best idea in a Champions League final.

@@Tomisasnake That's accurate. Karius would later write a thinly veiled apology on socials.

It's telling that the video says Liverpool inquired about Ali back in January 2018. Karius didn't really look like a solid first choice GK the season prior (16/17) either. I do wonder, had Liverpool won the UCL that year would they still have gone out and dropped a huge fee to get Alisson?

Inter Miami could use a keeper, sounds perfect for him!
Nothing to lose for both of them
You missed out that at Besiktas he was also dropped by his then TV presenter girlfriend after she too received threats online for his howlers.
It is very sad, but he’s been through a similar cycle at 3 clubs in a row. Distracted by an off pitch media lifestyle, his concentration fails in a crucial match & he makes a big error, fans get mad online, it spills over into his personal life with a partner who relies on positive social media for their livelihood, that relationship fails, his performance in training nose-dives and then he’s un-pickable for a match-day. This is obvious to all his managers, but he’s unable to resolve it. So many players can ride out this cycle, but for him it causes a crippling loss of confidence in his goal-keeping & life in general.
Compare this to LFCs other reserve keepers Kelleher or Adrian who have both conceded 5 (or more) in a senior game for LFC and just aren’t affected by these bad days.
Karius’ LFC contract expires next year just after he turns 29 & think there is no hope for him at a top European league side now and he’s almost not worth the trouble for a smaller club. LFC extended his contract after Kiev, but his continued link with LFC only made any error he made a bigger story. So really his problems were more than just one bad game, its a lack of top level mentality and how the Money-ball philosophy can fail spectacularly for a young player in this specialised position.

Wasn't there talk of him having a concussion around the time of the Champions League final. That was meant to explain some of his mistakes away.
He had a concussion. Quite serious, but liverpool didnt have a back up goalie...
Who's surprised the lady left him at his lowest point?
You mean "not surprised"
@@vishwasshankar3929 no I mean "surprised" if you get the sarcasm
Ah come on, how do expect me to get sarcasm from a typed sentence without knowing the tone or the inflexion?
She stayed with him for over 2 years after that ucl final, and the relationship ended after he was caught cheating, but oh yes..."the lady left him at his lowest point" 😑
Hopefully he'll get a move and things will pick up.
Confidence is important when you play any position in football but probably even more so when you're a goalkeeper as mistakes are so polarised.
He's done at top class. Some people have 15 minutes of fame, others infamy.
Do feel really sorry for him, that Kiev game has obviously had a massive impact on him and how the media have played a huge part in the torrent of abuse he’s had.
Shame there hasn’t been more pros like Casillas who came out to try and help him, including Liverpool players in that too.
As a Chelsea fan and having seen first hand what loss of confidence can do to a keeper, I feel really bad for Karius. What happened in Kiev was unfortunate and is most probably unforgivable for LFC fans, but I think as fans we sometimes tend to forget that these guys are human too, and end up taking it too far. I really hope he is able to get back up someday, would be nice to see another goalkeeper redemption :)
Not in the loop here, what happened to which Chelsea GK?
@@croco3671 Kepa had some personal issues and other issues which made him lose his confidence in the first season under Lampard. He made quite a few errors in 1½ season under Lampard, conceded a lot of silly goals which eventually made chelsea buy Mendy, but he's been steadily improving under Tuchel, and won us the super cup :)
Yes he has been inconsistent before and he can take the blame for that but his mistakes in the UCL final were clearly because of the concussion. And since people themselves often don't realize if they get one there's nobody to be blamed other than the LFC medical staff. All of what happened that night wasn't his fault at all.
Karius Redemption starts tday. He’s bringing the Carabou cup to Newcastle ⚫️⚪️💪
He didn't, but he still was the mvp of the team
@@laffytaffy1467 yeh unfortunately it wasn’t to be for us but Karius was solid, had a good game imo
@@Thomascloke123 Yeah, the 2 goals weren't his fault at all
@@laffytaffy1467 had no chance with both, Casemiro’s header had already flew past him before he could react and obvs the second goal the deflection beat him nout he could of possibly done for both
Poor Karius, he doesn’t deserve that much hate.
He took us to the 2018 UCL final. Without him we wouldn’t even be in the final…
He inspired us to get a new and much better goalkeeper, (Alisson.) (No offence Karius)
He will always be a scouser, he will be always red at heart.
he had a concussion in the final leading to the mistakes, if only fans supported his comeback and didnt make fun of him he wouldnt be in this state
Not true. He was always bad. The “concussion” excuse was made up. Even if it was true he should’ve requested to be subbed off.
He had one bad game and now people since he’s awful.
I’d rather have him then Adrian
Kelleher>
And bruh one bad game in the UCL finals?
Think if u didn't win the UCL the next season vs spurs!
That would have been 2 finals gone
He has alot my friend. But at that times lfc back up keeper (mignolet) is as bad if not worse than him.
He was consistently poor over his entire Liverpool career. Theres a reason he lost his place back to Mignolet in his first season
Kelleher is better than both.
Shows how important psychology is in football.
Video is very light on how the fans treated him through social media. Liverpool fans showing us once again why they’re the worst fans in football. Degrading the man and terrorising his family.
Simple: Mental health collapse. He made a major mistake. The media didn't realise he was human with feelings. Destroyed him every opportunity. His confidence got shattered. Became unsure which is terrible for a GK. Made more mistakes. Media destroyed him more and the vicious cycle continued. Had they realised that athletes are subject to high stress and have mental health issues this wouldn't have happened. Confidence and positive psychology is key. Look at Man City v R Madrid in the last 5 minutes.
honestly I am a goalkeeper myself and I understand him and I can forgive one howler no matter how bad it is because all goakeepers have them, but two horrible howlers in a single game at any level I just couldn't forgive.
The ad came out of nowwhere
Started to feel sorry for him up until the point where he couldn't agree personal terms with Basel. The guy's facing a situation where he might not have a club next year and he's still nit-picking over how much he's going to get paid? Modern footballers are too greedy.
Also, he was concussed during the game. With howlers like that, it was pretty clear.
when you look at the error where benzema scored, it showes, it must have been a concussion.
he would have seen benzema CLEARLY with peripheral vision. but he didnt. it was not a "normal" error.
😅 that UCL final
Even I couldn't believe what karius was doing; it was a bit shocking
Karius was unlucky but definitely hasn't helped himself. I live in Istanbul and even as someone who doesn't go out that much, I've seen him in clubs multiple times. He parties non stop and doesn't seem to interested in football anymore tbh, don't really blame him for it.
Left out the most important piece; he actually had suffered a concussion early in that final, and if the team doctor had done his job and pulled him, he’d have a completely different footballing career. Who knows, he could still be LP’s #1.
Karius could have been a great keeper but, like many modern players, his off pitch behaviour would negatively impact his on pitch performances. Look into what he was doing as a civvie the night before the games he made mistakes in, he should have been a social media influencer rather than a footballer.
Manscaped just gives these lads energy
Mark Goldbridge always gets me
If you don't want hair itching your face while wearing a mask....stop wearing the mask
At this point, I can't even point and laugh at the man. His life after Kyiv is just sad.
6:00 basically sums up his carreer.
Theres no narrative around him. He was never good enough from day one and the Champions League final was the straw that broke the camels back. Poor keeper
As a Tranmere Rovers fan, hearing John Achteberg's name mentioned in your video was very exciting for me!
The Karius situation and the way he was treated means you’ll never walk alone are just empty words.
Liverpool actively supported him during his loan move and are training him despite his contract having very little time on it, meaning it'll cost them any shot at making some money from him.
