3 Art Deco Earring Projects: A Silversmithing Tutorial

  • This tutorial shows how to make 3 different Art deco-ish earrings. The first and third have no stones, but the second features a pair of pretty citrines (6mm rounds). There are tons of variations possibilities with these, so have fun experimenting! I would categorize these as intermediate level projects because of the delicate soldering required. The materials for these can vary, but for these ones, I used 20 gauge sterling round wire, 18 gauge sterling round wire, 16 gauge sterling round wire, 12 gauge sterling half round wire, 14 gauge sterling square wire, and 3/16 inch fine silver bezel strip in 28 gauge. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande.
    I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. Hard to decide which I like best. All three are very interesting, and I'm beginning to like art deco more and more. Just came from the Tucson gem show where I found some cool rectangular stones to use for the art deco earrings you did several months ago. Thanks for all these great videos.

    I have a pair of the oval ones with topaz settings in the bottom of the crossover at the top. I love them so much I have often thought of reproducing them but have never really put the thought into it because I thought I had to put the bezel in this tutorial has got me thinking outside of the box. It has also made me realise that I lean toward Art Deco, even for formal wear on a personal level. I like to wear elegant clothes when attending a special black tie event and gravitate to art deco jewellery. But I never realised it because it has always been subconsciously subtle. Now I want to go bold.

      Have you checked out Art Moderne? It is kind of like a streamlined horizontal offshoot of Art Deco:)

    What gauge wire is considered standard that goes through the ear hole/piercing?

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  5 місяців тому +1

      Hello Booyalol! 20 gauge is what I've always heard. Some peoples' ear piercings can't do anything larger.
