  • This video tutorial shows how to fabricate a beautiful flowing pendant featuring a gorgeous Labradorite. I think of it as being Art Nouveau. The materials needed are 26 gauge sterling sheet, 12 gauge sterling square wire, 22 gauge sterling round wire, 14 gauge sterling round wire, and 3/16 inch fine silver bezel strip. Many different stones would look beautiful in this configuration. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

      I is my pleasure, do you have advise for soldering filigree (eg powdered solder)?

      @@puresas I have not tried that before, so unfortunately I’m probably not the best person to ask about that one. Sorry about that:)

    Gorgeous! I purchased a stone like this recently and am very inspired by your design. I think it is super helpful that you point out what areas should be soldered.

      Thanks Jaci! Glad you liked it. I really like labradorite. I actually collected some in Wyoming a couple of years ago. My friend cut a piece, and it turned out nice. The one he cut had more of a green/yellow flash to it. Every once in a while you run across some that has lavender or peachy colors to them. Send me a pic of your piece when you’re done. I’d love to see it! Thanks for the comment:)

    I loved how this design turned out. It almost reminded me of a Christmas ornament. I am going to try this design.. I only have 14 gauge square wire right now. so most likely I will just melt some silver down and make some 12 gauge square wire. And then I guess flatten it through my rolling mill. My rolling wire, so hopefully I won’t have to pull it through a draw plate…. I think I want to use some of my red Rosita cabs… I’m not gonna do it right now but it will be on my list of things to do. I’ll send you a pic on Instagram and I will tag you in my stories. Thanks for all you do, Michelle

    Thanks for what you're doing, keep at it, it grows! Also, its super helpful to know - at every step.- what you're using (sterling, fine, gauge, height, etc), so we can really "get" what you're doing and why you chose that technique/material. Im.always watching these videos, and wondering, " why did he choose that", or "what is that metal", etc. I imagine you want viewers to see you as a "go-to" for learning metalsmithing; what you are teaching. How do you keep the cardboard from rotting when it invariably gets wet (and it will)?

      Thanks Flying Chef! I started putting the gauges of the various materials in the video descriptions because I sometimes forget to say what they are:). As far as the tag board, it seems to hold up much better than the sawdust many people use. With a good tight setting, not too much water seems to get back there, so it isn’t much of an issue. Thank you for the comment!

    Hi Chad,
    Really enjoying your videos!.
    I see you put a backing under your cabochon to make is sit higher before you set it. What material do you use?

    • @chadssilversmithing
      @chadssilversmithing  Рік тому +1

      Hello Eric. Many people use sawdust, but I have found that tag board like the kind on the backs of legal pads holds up over time better. Thanks for the nice comment!

    Quick question, what kind of torch do you use? I bought an acetylene torch and called my home insurance and they told me they couldn't cover it.

      I use a Smith Acetylene/Air torch. I can’t speak to different insurance companies policies. Thanks for the comment Andrea!
