Honestly, rather than a strip down and a race, I'd rather see how cheaply this car could be restored using OEM, eBay and scrap yard parts.
of course you would, but the videos wouldn't get the same views and the cost and time to produce them would be massive.

Yep, totally agree. Fix it up for cheap. Those headlights don’t need replacing for starters. Numerous videos on UA-cam about how to refurb them. The rack could come off a breaker and I’m sure those anti roll bar bushes can be bought 3rd party, maybe a polly bush kit exists. Also, get Ethan to fit it all. Now that would be amazing content. Come on Ethan, your a pro now.

Randomly I used to work at this garage , unlike other places I’ve worked this garage actually does things properly and I can’t recommend them enough . And Tom if you see this well done glad to see your doing alright 👍🏻.

You can save those headlights 100% and they come out very good. Ive done worse
As someone who is not an experienced detailer at all I would make those headlights 90% better. I restored the headlights on mums car one day and forgot to tell her. She asked what I did to her headlights because she kept thinking she had full beam on. £20 would sort them headlights easily.

@alana mcarroll Tom and his dad (who used to run the garage) are ex Volvo technicians, they know their stuff. They only use genuine Volvo parts as aftermarket parts are shit quality.

I'd have found this a lot more interesting if the price breakdown also included just what was necessary to get it a fresh 12-month ticket. That would truly indicate if it was REALLY a bargain or not.
100% - The $1000 stereo and replace the headlights (vs just refinishing them) is more theatre than useful.
@@chrish6373 Exactly. My car is getting towards 20-years old now and I know for a fact if I took it to a garage and asked for 'back to perfection' repairs I'd be looking at at least 3-4K. This isn't exactly interesting nor surprising. - I think I'd just find these videos far more fun if they concentrated on buying cheap and seeing how much a new MOT sets them back because, in my eyes, this video makes that Volvo look like a nail, but if it can pass an MOT for less than £300-£400, it's way more satisfying. I mean, let's face it, 90% of people who buy 'cheap cars' are only interested/terrified in what the next MOT will bring.

You can get an aftermarket radio for 100 pounds with an installation kit and it would even sound better than the original one. For the headlights, just get an used pair from a donor car, you can find plenty.
Out of curiosity to see how over inflated the prices of that garage were had a look on Ebay a set of headlights in excellent shape £72 anti roll bar brushes £23 droplinks £12 radio £39.95 so yeah 6k right......
No thats what brand new OEM parts + labour cost. After market or Used parts are obviously gonna cheaper

All Volvo engines from the P2 era are 5cyl.
those headlights would polish up easily, of course you have to know what you're doing, but id never replace those headlamps, when you could do it for cheap yourself.
Do it myself on my rover using pink stuff, Autosol, brasso then wax over. By hand aswell. aye I gotta do it every 6 month but still cheaper than new headlights!.
Or use the magical lamp, it's awesome.

You could buy yourself a polisher, some quality compound, polish, sanding pads, clear coat, wax etc for less than one headlamp.
i have this exact same car with way more mileage and my headlights were so fogged up you couldn't even see the bulbs and such on the inside, sanded them down starting with 800 grit and going down all the way to 1500 grit and the put some 2k clear coat on them and they look almost new. took a bit of time and effort but saved me a load of money.

@@gpglicious which is absolute BS when it comes to stuff like the steering rack, swirl flaps and a few other parts that are just designed poorly and brake over and over again :)
Good news is that they finally realized that the pricing us absurd and now give a lifetime warranty on the repair.
@Do One Meh, depends on the model / year / engine / extras.
Overall the reliability is higher than average, but several specific parts brake all the time and Volvo can't seem to figure it out (for example the swirl flaps had two revisions ant they were still sh*t, so Volvo dropped them altogether). There are a lot of broken ones on the road because the cars are dirt cheap, the parts are absurdly expensive and the owners just can't be bothered.

This "uneconomical to repair" is such bullshit. Buy aftermarket parts for suspension, engine, seals, sensors, buy used parts like the intercooler, steering rack, headlights, radio and do it yourself! Then you'll have a 5 pot diesel in decent condition for about 1500-2000 quid.
I agree you could get second hand mirrors headlights etc
if you have plenty of free time and personal skill and instruments (not cheap by themselves) and a garage space where you can do it (a lot of people don't have that luxury), then sure go ahead and do it yourself. I think many people take these things for granted because they have their dad's garage with all the necessary tools in the countryside or something where they can mess around with this stuff, but not everyone has that in their lives unfortunately.
@@crabyman3555 I live in a one bedroom house with no garage, just a parking space behind the building. My first car in the uk was a £200 corsa b, did 37k miles in less than two years. My current car is £500 bmw e46, I've done 32k miles since I bought it. You can guess how well maintained both were for that kind of money. Oh, and I learnt IT in college.
steering rack leak is fixable by just a 5€ seal no need to replace the whole unit. You can replace the parts inside the rack as well when you have it off the car.
Ok but those headlights can be made SIGNIFICANTLY better with a $20 headlamp kit, new ones aren’t usually needed.
I paid a pro. guy to come out and do mine as I was getting nowhere with one of those headlamp restoration kits.
He did 3 headlamps (one on one of my other cars, the one the other side had been renewed already) for £99.
The car looks fantastic now.
Plus you can get new lenses for about $60 each.
I spent a quid on some rubbing compound.. It worked just fine
Agree the 3m kit is pretty good designed to use with a drill.
Takes about 3/4hr to do both sides.
Once they're done a 2K clearcoat should make them like factory
To me, that cost means nothing, you’re not going to buy new headlights, you’re either going to try and buff them out properly or buy second hand from eBay, or live with them, if they’re road legal.
In fact, I’m sure you could shop around and buy most of the parts second hand, or just fix it enough to pass a MOT and make it road legal.
This is not banganomics to take a car of that age and get prices for new, genuine replacement parts. 🤷♂️
It´s not supposed to be bangernomics in this episode...The point was really just to do a health check on it, and as a bonus show how a certified workshop could drain your wallet. Now i would start scavenging the scrap heaps if it was my car...
Spray WD40 on the headlight lenses moments before the MOT, it's a good temporary polish to get it through the beam pattern check. How do I know? My own friendly MOT man did it himself.
This is the perfect opportunity to show how much can be saved by doing the work yourself and finding bargain parts.

@@crabyman3555 I lived in the UK growing up so no, your opinion doesn’t ring true. I’ve fixed many cars on driveways, in one car garages to sitting at the side of the road hoping someone doesn’t sideswipe the car I’m besides or underneath and crush me.
But I’ve done it and I never had the luxury of UA-cam to teach me how to do things.
Now yes, you are right that some don’t have the personal skills but that’s why they’re called skills, learn them.
The car has been neglected. Like any car Volvos need servicing. Breaks, suspension, tyres, break shoes, break pads, wind screen washer pumps, little bits of plastic , like seat belt guides , that break, the audio system , hu850, common fault, gives up, .the older car will require more fixing but cheaper than buying new.
I love these evaluation shows, make me smile all the way through. Some crazy price for headlights though. But mega miles.

It does not matter, if you went to a certified dealer for repairs using OE parts, it would be as expensive everywhere. You just have to be smart, that's all... The first thing - the fact that they don't sell bushes for anti roll bar is a ripoff, and that is just the start. Virtually everything is a ripoff in that list, but those bushes scream the most. A whole anti roll bar for 275 if your 10$ bushes go bad? Who does that? That guys are not mechanics, they are just parts exchangers...

The £600 for a new drive shaft and grand for a new clutch stung a bit though.
I reckon you would get that through its Mot for less than £400.
The 240/740/940s would like to have a word with you. For serious though, these old school volvo's are so much cheaper to maintain than the newer ones from the 2000s.

It would be a great episode to do an Ebay/breakers yard challenge to scavenge parts and see how cheap you can get this roadworthy
Wouldn't cost as much if the Volvo specialist wasn't ripping the arse out of it, take it to a local indy and the price is a fraction of that.

That is a LOT of money for a steering rack, I paid $3600 Mexican pesos ($175 usd) for a rebuilt one from autozone with a 3 year warranty. works perfectly fine and my 1991 nissan maxima now runs great and is once again fun to drive
Please do not push this car to death. Its a lovely looking car. Make the necessary repairs only. Some wet standing for the headlights may work. Get a aftermarket radio. Fox the wipers. Replace the rubber bushings and tires. Find and fix the leaks. And some basic servicing like thorough cleaning, fluids change, brake pads etc. (Ethan can do that).
We would love to see this car getting some more life.

Don't know about the uk, but here in germany it is illegal to do that, you can do it yourself, but no shop will do it for you...
@@michihoffi69 Interesting. In the UK plenty of garages will do it for you or you an even get someone out to to you house who specialises in it (and usually small body/wheel repairs)

Normal price for one of those non-xenon lights is 60 pounds , brand new, original made by hella is aprox 150
Absolute rip off! If you're willing to put in the elbow grease you can make them near enough new. I've made far worse headlights look decent on several old VWs.

I've put a couple in my P1 V70. Ok,they're from China and don't have the adjusting motors but they work fine,£180 the pair and I didn't like paying that! Got a nice pair of genuine Volvo 'jewel' lights but you can bet as soon as I fit them a bloody stone'll go through 'em!
@@unknown_user283 not from china but still decent quality one, and original quality Hella, ( original volvo part is hella or mag. Marelli) is 150 pounds, yes xenon ones are expensive as hell, around 400 for piece, but halogen ones, as shown in video, are not expensive ;)
And also, those old ones can be polished to look almost brand new ;) if you cant believe that i will send you screenshot from catalogue
I think we all got to the point where we want to see a quality CT restoration video. There’s always talks about it, and many of us has done it. I’d really like to see you guys doing it, browse used car parts webshops, go to the local scrappy and admire your work at the end!

Nothin' wrong with Range Rovers other than poor ownership and neglected maintenance. No problems keeping one of them on the road for pennies... my L322 is easy to work on and parts are very cheap with a long production run. Sports are harder to work on and probably had more abuse from the Chester set.
Nice setup, always the best place to start independent specialist garages.
My XC70 D5 just cracked 630 000 km. Still runs great.

It must be possible to revive the headlamps for less than that. And a whole new front sway bar instead of just new bushes? Yeah, I'm certain that this could be put right for vastly less than £7000. I'd like to see how much you could fix for your £1400 guess (not including tyres and regular service items).

@@CarThrottle Quite probably selling the radio as it was on ebay would have given you enough money to make the car legal again.
You can repair the rear anti roll bar with new bushes, it's not the easiest job but entirely possible.
On my 2002 D5 the intercooler is the same part number as a petrol engined model and available used for about£40.The anti-skid message on my car was caused by cracked front abs rings and fixed cheaply.
This car could be sorted for a fraction of the quote in the video.
Those prices are why we have so many internet mechanics, cant imagine any one will be checking out gb autos any time soon 🤣

On the p2 volvos you should always expect to replace the spring seats lol 😂. They are the biggest weak point on the suspension. But a pair from rein or Sachs is only 40$ for the beefier xc90 version in the states so it’s not that bad if you do your own work.

What would have made a great episode/series would have been then going and seeing how cheaply you could do the jobs sourcing oem and used parts and doing the work yourselves. Now that would have been worth watching!

They missed a chance for "ribbed for extra pleasure"
7:27 knowing Volvo's assembly process, those bushing are probably formed on the anti-roll bar or put on before it's bent. Meaning even if you could order the bushings individually, you probably couldn't get them on, and even if you did you would probably just want to pay the full price for the new anti-roll bar, out of sheer convenience.
Apart from the radio (what a carve up!) we have carried much the same jobs on our two 1999 P80 models, and at a fraction of these bloated prices. Granted, a lot of the parts were used 'pulls' but the rack was about £50, in excellent working condition, headlights we replaced with Volvo 'Crystal Lights' so came in at a whopping £180 a pair, and most other parts were after market motor factor parts, but on cars of this age, they only get like this through neglect. If jobs are done as they become necessary, it need never that much to keep and older car of any make in good order. It's only when the jobs are allowed to snowball that you come across big fat repair bills.
Now do a series of you guys repairing this car yourself for a fraction of the cost!
Could do all those repairs for a fraction of the total, guess it makes it more interesting though
You know what might make good viewing is seeing you repair it with parts from a breaker/Ebay to show how much it actually costs to keep a cheap car on the road. Even using pattern parts would minimise that bill. No matter what he says those headlamps would polish if it was done properly.
I bought one in 2018. I loved it for the whole 3 hours it worked.

Dealerships and OEM parts are a ripoff anyway. Our Volvos are quite cheap in their upkeep, but only because we avoid those things! Car Throttle could have done this more intelligently I reckon.

Not really the Garage's fault, that's just the cost of OEM volvo parts and they have to use them to be a certified Volvo specialist I'm guessing
Remember this is all OEM Volvo parts, Volvo specialists are going to go main dealer.
You could easily get a 2nd hand steering rack for like £45-£60 probably.
If you went patent parts/2nd hand for as much as possible you could probably bring the lot down to like 2 grand.

OEM Volvo garages are generally expensive, plus it's an older car as well, so I'm not massively surprised. It's similar to what it would have cost the Merc to be restored that was on the channel.
Fix it yourself with ebay, used and aftermarket parts and try spending only 1/10 of his offer
I have the same car bought 5 months ago, pretty much all jobs done included here and paid 5000. I am quite happy about that price :D
This would be great with garage Labour charge on the parts you can’t do yourself, supplied with used/salvaged parts to get a real price. Those headlights in a scrapyard would be £20-30!

There used to be a euro car parts guy on a forum I use, kept coming on offering discount codes. He lasted a couple of weeks before he gave up after all the crap we gave him 🤣🤣
