ASU Graduate Commencement Spring 2024

On May 6, more than 6,900 ASU master’s and PhD candidates gathered in the Desert Financial Arena to celebrate their spring commencement.
The total spring class is ASU’s largest, with nearly 20,700 graduates, made up of close to 14,700 campus immersion students and more than 6,700 online students. 2024 also marks the 10th anniversary of the Starbucks College Achievement Plan and its 100,000th online graduate earning their degree this summer.
These spring graduates will be among the 9,500 Arizonans joining the workforce, contributing to the state and national economies.
In that vein, speaker Regent DuVal informed the joyous graduates, “You have exactly what our nation needs and you have the obligation to step up. You are what we need.”
President Michael Crow also addressed the eager crowd, emphasizing the significance of the master’s and PhD degrees and what it takes to achieve this milestone. He spoke of ASU being the largest producer of graduates from a single institution and how this connects to the world and the university’s ideal of inclusion. “It’s very difficult to be inclusive if you are small. The world is not small.”
Crow also encouraged the new graduates to focus on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four freedoms: freedom of speech and expression, freedom to worship, freedom from want where everyone has the same access to opportunities and freedom from fear.
“Focus on those four things and your life will have great meaning.”
