Handforged Damascus Knife - The Delamination Strikes Back
Вставка

- In this video I tried forging low layer damascus by hand. The second forgeweld didn't work out but the pattern still came out great. Hopefully by the third time everything will work and then the video will be a bit longer aswell.
Steel: 1.2842 (Manganese); 1.5634 (Nickel); 1.2067 (average High-Carbon)

Which side do you prefer? I think the dotted one looks more interesting.
I prefer steel that can't delaminate😳🤣
My foundry has been going beyond copper melt Temps, so I'm planning to give it a go with true crucible steel
I would prefer delamination free steel aswell 😄
That‘s pretty cool, crucible steel looks fantastic if you can pull it off. I‘ve been watching some videos by FZ knives and it looked amazing
@@NjordArtisan it's sort of been a byproduct of the casting. I can run a magnet over my ash the next day and pull chunks
@@tbishop4961two birds, one stone 😁
I thought about building a dedicated foundry to cast some thicker brass pieces. I've got a lot of old faucets but 80% of the brass is oddly shaped and buying thick brass plates seems awfully expensive
Since you are using a gas forge, try to weld the sides of the billet and make some kind of canister, that way you don't have to worry about flux and It will be easier to completely forge weld the damascus.
Great idea! I only saw that with san mai and never thought about doing it with damascus. Thanks!
Keep it forge welding hot when moving a large volume of steel.I would get delams by letting it get to cool. I found it difficult to get a feel for from videos on the net. Great work all the same!
Thanks! Yeah it probably comes down to experience. I finally managed some solid forgewelding in my second to last video and, like you said, my problem was that the steel got too cold.
I just did a triple restack to reforge together tomorrow, and now I will worry all night about delams! I suspect your billet didn't get hot enough all the way through for the second forge weld to stick, but my opinion is worth every penny you're paying for it.
Vey nice job🙏
Thank you! My second to last vid shows one without delaminations 😁
