- Restoring a rusty knife I found in the ground, in the place where my grandpa's house used to be. The house stood there for more than 100 years, so this knife must be really old, and it shows.
There was little metal under all that rust, so I decided to make it into a small wood carving knife.
The wooden beam was part of grandpa's house, so I thought it was a nice touch to use it as the handle for this restoration.
lets see here, fake fake fake fake, ooh, flaky fake, and a deep fried FAKE ASS VIDEO, rust does NOT GROW, it EATS!
You can repeat fake as long as you like, it's actually not fake. Look at medieval swords found buried in the ground, they look exactly like this. Also check metal detecting groups, 99% of the iron they find looks like this.
After removing the crust you can see that the metal was eaten away, full of holes and missing parts.

This really makes me want to get back in the metalsmithing studio. I made my own carving knives with wooden handles like this. They were want I used to carve the wax for casting jewelry. I really miss it.

Carving knives typically have larger handles than traditional western style knives, for more control and to minimize sore spots in your hands

on some restoration channels ive seen a thing that can just like,, remove rust. and i dont know how it works but this guy pretty much just saws it off so it feels like hes not making much of an attempt to keep the original design
This is very much a comfort video for me. Whenever I’m having a rough time, I watch this video. If I’m feeling down, I remind myself that just like that rusty knife, all it takes is some hard work to break through the exterior.

Amazing job, love what you did with the wire, I might try that technique myself some day. However, the Handle is unnecessary large. It looks way wrong on such a small blade. But that’s just me picking faults when I should be focusing on the incredible craftsmanship to do something like this!

Fun fact, one of my brothers threw a kitchen knife behind my shed a long time ago, I found it when cleaning up around the shed about 6-7 years later, it didn’t look nearly as bad as this did at the beginning.
