"Sublimity can be terrifying." - Paul Jacobs

- Paul Jacobs is known for his unusual “firsts”: He landed an official church appointment at the age of 15, won a Grammy for organ, and played the complete works of Bach in an 18-hour marathon concert. In this thoughtful and thought-provoking conversation, Paul Jacobs discusses a wide range of topics. Why do miracles happen only when you’re alone with yourself and the music? Why play organ music in today's existential vacuum? How do you find an individual voice on the most complex and variable of instruments? And what does it take to memorize an invisible matrix of pistons, stop pulling etc. and all the notes of six-part counterpoint Bach? www.livingthec...
I had a wonderful discussion with him at the recent Longwood Competition, when he expressed his dismay at our current American politics and government, not for the reasons you might imagine, but because they devalue beauty and high art, causing a slowly increasing poverty in our cultural life, which he sees as essential to a community. I drove home thinking about that at length.
Mr. Jacobs's sincerity, deep love for music, and humility are touching.
@@LivingtheClassicalLife All thanks from me to you! I love this series of programs "Living the Classical Life," and this episode featuring Paul Jacobs was no exception! I sigh at the thought of trying to memorize one Bach Prelude and Fugue at the piano. To think that Paul Jacobs has memorized all of the works Bach wrote for the organ is mind-boggling beyond belief. To have such an extraordinary mind and yet to be so human and modest about his staggering accomplishments stirs love and gratitude in my heart for such an incredible person being alive in this world!
@@LivingtheClassicalLife I only wish each LTCL episode were longer, but I guess I'm greedy!
I wish Paul would have video taped the Bach marathon recital... and share it on youtube...
Thank you for these enlightening and inspiring conversations. There is a sensitivity on the part of the interviewer that allows for these different experiences, memories, and insights to come through. A pleasure and an education to watch this series.

18 hours of Bach! Paul Jacobs is in GOD mode.
Another riveting episode! I found myself agreeing with Paul on every point! Highlights:
1. “People crave beauty”
2. Asking audience not to applaud.
3. That some of the most profound musician experiences occur when we are alone.
4. Everyone should hear this music.
Thanks Paul, Zsolt and Peter.
