Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Venezuela, Cuba & How U.S. Sanctions Are Driving Migration

  • Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
  • In Part 3 of our interview with leftist Colombian President Gustavo Petro, he describes how hard-line U.S. policies are preventing the Americas from addressing issues like migration, calling on the Biden administration to "open up a plural dialogue" to bring the region closer together. He notes many people moving through Latin America to seek asylum in the United States are from Venezuela, a country that has been devastated by U.S. sanctions. He calls for an end to punitive economic sanctions against both Venezuela and Cuba, both to slow migration and to address historic injustice. "The scars of history - the invasions from before, the old imperialism, the old domination - continue to weigh against humanity."

He's clever alright. I fact much more clever than honest. He's well aware the economic crisis in Venezuela predate the sanctions but portends it's otherwise because it promotes his narrative.

The US interference in Central and South America is a large part of the immigration problems on the southern border of the USA. US policy ends up creating the problem of illegal immigration. This has been true for decades. President Petro is a breath of fresh air.

It isn’t, it’s never been. But US propaganda like movies, tv shows, etc have spread that whole lie like its true, the whole “American Dream”.
Many people from Latin America who do end up in the US will face many challenges and a high probability of them will end up in poverty or criminal activity.
We need to improve the conditions in Latin America so people have more opportunities and stay here to make the countries better, but at the same time the US needs to stop using us as their backyard and imposing sanctions on governments they disagree with.

it has been shown time and again that America often breaks its promises to other lands, especially if that land is populated with brown skinned peoples. just look at the promises made to people in Afghanistan who were of help to United States cohorts (in all of their guises) stationed there. their efforts and loyalties were re-payed by abandonment in many cases

President Petro should have a broader platform -- The current administration is so fixated on dominating Europe's energy supplies, that it has little use for competition. Venezuela's oil was plentiful for the U.S. and certainly Venezuela has good supply -- it does need upgrades as the ports have suffered from the blockades. The U.S. should stop dumping funds in Ukraine and support our neighbors in the Americas -- we arre the new world and the lands of self determination
