🇻🇪 How are US sanctions affecting life in Venezuela? | The Stream
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- For more than 15 years, the United States has been imposing a wide variety of economic sanctions against Venezuela, claiming the South American country has aided in drug trafficking, sponsored terrorism, and committed human rights abuses. In 2017, then-US President Donald Trump ramped up these sanctions in an aim to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, adding that a “possible military option” was on the table. But US efforts to dismantle Venezuela’s elected government fell short, and civilians have borne the ill-effects of US sanctions.
According to a report by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, sanctions led to more than 40,000 deaths in 2017-2018. They’ve also increased diseases and worsened mortality, forced millions of people to leave the country, and are a major factor in an economic collapse that has left people scrambling to find food and medicine.
In this episode of The Stream we’ll look at the impact of sanctions on Venezuelans, and ask whether they are an effective foreign policy tool or simply collective punishment.

is affecting USA too, because migration of Venezuelans to USA has increased . I think it will increased to millions.
2 million Venezuelans migrated to Peru, and it has brought A LOT of crime to Peru. It’s horrible.

It is devastating that these sanctions hurt the innocent the most. The deaths associated with these sanctions is awful.
What I like about Trump, is that he has a big mouth and he disclosed the United States dirty secrets, lies and hypocrisy.
@holaforistas _ And now Trump goes around the country and blames President Joe Biden for the Venezuelan Migrant problem in America, when Trump is the one that sanctioned both the Government and Oil Industry that brought about the suffering in that country and created all these refugees coming from Venezuela

If you are an American native or resident of the continent called America, you should know and be well aware that no country has the name of continent of which it is a part. Except Australia, the only continent country. That is why the United States of America is part of America but it is not America by itself. Venezuelans are Americans too.
@@DemosBrutus you right let me correct that
@@DemosBrutus😂😂😂 Venezuelans are not Americans. Nobody thinks of south America as THE USA OF AMERICA. If you aren't a part of the USA history calling yourself American is cringe. If Venezuelans were Americans they wouldn't need to come here illegally

Hello @sandinielsen4401 I am Venezuela and I am still here in the country. The government of Chavez and the current one (Maduro) have ruined the economy of the country incredibly, they have stolen a lot of billions and there is proof of it. I remember how my life was before, it was much better than now, and in a period of a few months I together with the country have become impoverished in an absurd way. And it is not because of the US, it is because of the national government of Venezuela! the crisis started years before the sanctions.

Qatar and wealthy gulf states should provide immigration quotas for their fellow Venezuelans who are facing hardship due to US sanctions
This is a pretty stupid assumption, especially for Venezuela. The Venezuelan government is corrupt and sanctions don’t target the overall economy. I’ve had friends travel there to open up gym franchises. There is mommy there and an economy, but the few at the top want to control the many.
That is because Venezuala breach their contract ..
Is venezuelans like him speaking is the main reason its citizens are suffering.
Venezuela did this to themselves! MASSIVE corruption. Leaders throughout the country have been stealing their citizens money for decades and shipping it offshore, to Spain. Rich Venezuelan leaders are buying up the most expensive and exclusive neighborhoods in Madrid! Smarten up people!
Why does a bigger country (world reserve currency actually, super powerful) need to put sanctions on small countries that don't even pose any threat or do that much, if any, wrong around the world? Just because it doesn't agree with or like its politics or political leaders? Nevermind how good or effective they are as politicians or economists. Sanctions hurt the normal (all) people, the whole country.
And the fact of the matter is, just pretty recently, Biden sent a U.S. envoy to Venezuela asking for Venezuelan oil. This, after, Madero has had unsuccessful coup attempts against carried out by the United States and a unwillingness to officially recognize him as the President of Venezuela.
Talk about creating enemies and people who hate the United States, the Government of the United States anyway...
But if one reads some books, what the U.S. rules based order does to countries who default on their debt to the I.M.F. is... horrendous. Crimes against humanity and nature.
Govt of Venezuela should do everything to come out of this sanction, welfare of its citizens should be d top most priority of any govt.
If Venezuela government was like that these sanctions were not necessary from the beginning. Ignorance was and will be always downfall for any country and its people.
The revolutionary government of Venezuela has done everything it can for the last 23 years, when sanctions against the Chávez government began and today against the Maduro government. Today all that effort is paying off.

I can drive around and see more and more Latin American migrants stuck in the streets just drinking so that they can probably escape reality.

Very even coverage with apologists from both sides and some intelligent analysts.
you cant make people suffer because you want to, that's morally wrong
USA is so proned to impose sanction on any countries where democracy and forms of freedom are regularly are voileted
But sanction doesn't work because the impact is worst on general public and not on authorities for whom is sanction is aimed.
Why? Because in these countries the leaders do not care about welfare of people who are helpless to change the dictators. So in fact, sanction help these dictatorial leaders because they can blame all ills on USA. Economically these leaders never suffer because whatever little there's it's used by and for the leaders.
Sanction can work effectively in countries where the leaders care their people.!
The lunatic, ridiculous and maniacal obsession of the US to impose sanctions on other countries is a reflection that the other methods it used before are not giving results.
The US supports coups and against democratically elected socialist governments. Then the US destroy the economies and then claim that socialism doesn’t work.
I think you need to look at who has their figure on trigger. Not only sanctions are causing mass migration, but also the toppling of government. In example, Honduras, Libya and Ukraine. Seven million Ukrainians out of 38 million
I think the US need to left the sanctions to avoid Venezuela moving more closer to China
Big ups to China 🇨🇳 👏👏👏, thumbs down to the United States 🇺🇸👎👎👎booo!!!
I believe that the United States believes that it has the right to intervene with the will of other countries. China offers Venezuela the benefits that the US has always denied them. It is too late for imperial impositions, that is over.
I love Tamara's dea of Santions as a method to better a situation 😂
Punishment as a means to make people happy
Not one person mentioned, Chavez or maduro’s fault in this
It’s their voters fault. Why did Venezuelans allow their politicians to ruin their country. Now they’re trying to escape their own mess. These people should never be given the right to vote in the US.
This is what happens when you steal assets owned by multi national oil conglomerates.
The same thing is going on in Iran- the Saudis did it the right way.
Step one is to give back the oil rights .
Who gave the right to the party that dished out the punishments?
Why anyone has to give right to any country? The U.S has its own right to dish out any punishment if it is necessary. We don't want to trade with any country we don't want to or need to. The Venezuela don't need to trade with the U.S. It can go find it's own trading partner in this world.

America needs to stop all monetary and food aid and any other aid to any country and focus on lifting it’s own people out of poverty. And I don’t mean welfare programs. I mean start creating jobs by boosting domestic production of everything we consume. Give out federal grants to individuals who will build businesses inside americas borders and produce every part of what ever they do inside the country.
exactly... where is the debate about this..... same for Europe...
Absolutely! The West must stop providing aid to these ungrateful countries. The US single handedly saved the continent of Africa from AIDs, all for free and a great cost to the American tax payer. You are misunderstanding the term 'sanctions'. Not dealing with a country is covered by the national sovereignty of the country.
Sanctions on the other hands are aiming to prevent the targeted country to deal with anybody which only the UN is authorised to issue. All other sanctions are illegal. Just like attacking a countries in terms of war.

I would only add "we don´t trade with *people who hate us". No nation has a right to trade with the US or Europe or India or Denmark or France, etc., against US will, and no country should have access to the Financial Market against US will. Just to be in line with what the video is saying.
*people who hate us= people who don´t let us control "our oil" (0:30)
Sanctions are for the real free nations.
the problem is that sanctions are not imposed by the US only in regard to its own trade relationship with the sanctioned country, but rather often make it hard or impossible (and financially punishable) for other countries to trade with the sanctioned country as well. if it was only a matter of the US cutting trade relations with a particular country, that would be a different situation, but companies from whatever country trading with Cuba, for example, are liable to be financially punished, so it is in effect an attempt to completely isolate a country from the world market altogether, not just from your own market.
@@araponga.revolucionaria That's the plan. Same thing in North Korea. It is right and just.
