🇻🇪 How are US sanctions affecting life in Venezuela? | The Stream

  • For more than 15 years, the United States has been imposing a wide variety of economic sanctions against Venezuela, claiming the South American country has aided in drug trafficking, sponsored terrorism, and committed human rights abuses. In 2017, then-US President Donald Trump ramped up these sanctions in an aim to oust Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, adding that a “possible military option” was on the table. But US efforts to dismantle Venezuela’s elected government fell short, and civilians have borne the ill-effects of US sanctions.
According to a report by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, sanctions led to more than 40,000 deaths in 2017-2018. They’ve also increased diseases and worsened mortality, forced millions of people to leave the country, and are a major factor in an economic collapse that has left people scrambling to find food and medicine.
In this episode of The Stream we’ll look at the impact of sanctions on Venezuelans, and ask whether they are an effective foreign policy tool or simply collective punishment.

Why does a bigger country (world reserve currency actually, super powerful) need to put sanctions on small countries that don't even pose any threat or do that much, if any, wrong around the world? Just because it doesn't agree with or like its politics or political leaders? Nevermind how good or effective they are as politicians or economists. Sanctions hurt the normal (all) people, the whole country.
And the fact of the matter is, just pretty recently, Biden sent a U.S. envoy to Venezuela asking for Venezuelan oil. This, after, Madero has had unsuccessful coup attempts against carried out by the United States and a unwillingness to officially recognize him as the President of Venezuela.
Talk about creating enemies and people who hate the United States, the Government of the United States anyway...
But if one reads some books, what the U.S. rules based order does to countries who default on their debt to the I.M.F. is... horrendous. Crimes against humanity and nature.

USA is so proned to impose sanction on any countries where democracy and forms of freedom are regularly are voileted
But sanction doesn't work because the impact is worst on general public and not on authorities for whom is sanction is aimed.
Why? Because in these countries the leaders do not care about welfare of people who are helpless to change the dictators. So in fact, sanction help these dictatorial leaders because they can blame all ills on USA. Economically these leaders never suffer because whatever little there's it's used by and for the leaders.

America needs to stop all monetary and food aid and any other aid to any country and focus on lifting it’s own people out of poverty. And I don’t mean welfare programs. I mean start creating jobs by boosting domestic production of everything we consume. Give out federal grants to individuals who will build businesses inside americas borders and produce every part of what ever they do inside the country.

Absolutely! The West must stop providing aid to these ungrateful countries. The US single handedly saved the continent of Africa from AIDs, all for free and a great cost to the American tax payer. Expert said there would be literally nothing left to Africa, hopefully we learn our lesson and don't help next time!

That simple notions informs how businesses demand their workers to show great customer service, all the way to the quality of life you are used to in America. I can create an exhaustive list if need be , but my point is most Americans would cry if companies worked within regulations like you described. Because you guys are spoiled and have built your wealth through resource extraction from the Global South.

Big population, fair amount of natural resources, poor education, ignorant and greedy government, ignorant citizens, etc. The world has changed, indeed. However, technology is the key to unlock the better life. How to get that technology? Through proper education. Government should spent money for benefit of its people not just spendthrift.

You are misunderstanding the term 'sanctions'. Not dealing with a country is covered by the national sovereignty of the country.
Sanctions on the other hands are aiming to prevent the targeted country to deal with anybody which only the UN is authorised to issue. All other sanctions are illegal. Just like attacking a countries in terms of war.

the problem is that sanctions are not imposed by the US only in regard to its own trade relationship with the sanctioned country, but rather often make it hard or impossible (and financially punishable) for other countries to trade with the sanctioned country as well. if it was only a matter of the US cutting trade relations with a particular country, that would be a different situation, but companies from whatever country trading with Cuba, for example, are liable to be financially punished, so it is in effect an attempt to completely isolate a country from the world market altogether, not just from your own market.
