      Happy new year, dear Professor! Thank you for your continued contribution on the commander format, my most beloved and now only played format in all of Magic. I hope Wizards will listen to your arguments and reprint cards in those commander designed boosters, so that everyone can do, what they should - play the game and enjoy it, without the need to pump endless (and most of the time) non existent resources into their hobby.

      I think the core sets of the past are another great source for a magic card pool to get Commander cards.

      Would really like a return of conspiracies on the form of a conspiracy deck, shared among all players, similar to archenemy's schemes, and you'd flip the top conspiracy of the deck and it would stay in effect until either a condition is met or some card triggers a player to flip another. With this design each player could put in that deck some cards, maybe up to 3 each, and they could interact with the monarch, like giving bonuses to the monarch and debuffs to the others, having an increased effect if you are the monarch...

    Battlebond was such a thorough homerun. Tuning based on multiplayer dynamics is a lot safer than tuning based on the idea that you'll have consistent access to a single central card that's central to your deck's theme.
    Monarch, friend or foe, and voting create really interesting and novel gameplay scenarios, and the battlebond lands have really increased accessibility of 4 and 5C deckbuilding.
    It really seems like when R&D designs directly for Commander, things end up overtuned or on-rails when it comes to deckbuilding.
    Plus the actual set was really fun and allowed me to play Magic with friends of mine who are only tangentially aware of how to play.
    I honestly can't disagree with anything you've said here. You nailed it.

    Really hope that they'll revisit Battlebond. Recently discovered Deadly Designs and run it in my Ghen deck to control archenemies. I'd also like them to revisit Archemeny, because certain commanders are bound to end up advancing towards their win-con earlier than others. It'd be interesting to see them revisit mechanics like Tempting Offer, Assist or Strive in that context to make games where one player is quickly established as the archenemy more engaging.

    I'll throw a vote in for Strixhaven. The Mystical Archives made some of those cards affordable for me and I enjoy the MDFC legendary creatures as commanders, and I can't leave out the elder dragon cycle.

    • @AtriumXP666
      @AtriumXP666 3 роки тому +2

      their cycle of multicolor lands is also solid, if not entirely wonderful.
      I think the Mystical Archives was just a bit hindered by having so many Standard-focused cards in the pool, making them feel less powerful overall, but that's not really a fair criticism here.

      Make sure that you can find the right playgroup first, so that you can have some enjoyable playing experience.

      Once I learned Commander format, it became the only way I play the game. Does not have to be expensive. When you play with enough players, it's as often politics that will win you games as deck power. Never underestimate the value of commons. Surprise your opponents to maximize fun for everyone.

    Battle bond was one of the most fun I've had in a game store. Whole event was like a party and it brought in a bunch of new faces, roommates who usually just played against eachother or friends / SOs of the regulars, but it was awesome to see so many people having fun together like that.

    I have to say, I think that Lorwyn/shadowmoor/morningtide/eventide were fantastic for EDH, as well as Tarkir block. Those both reinvigorated my desire to play magic, provided some amazing cards for EDH, and were a blast to play in limited. They gave a lot of tribal support and made some interesting deck builds

    • @dac314
      @dac314 3 роки тому +6

      I'd say the same for Ixalan. Great tribes, cool new setting, lots of potent legendaries, and the way they unevenly split the color wedges into (UG), (WB), (BUR), and (WRG) was unique from nearly every other set that sticks to EITHER wedges or pairs, and doesn't mix the two.

      Seeing a fair few folks bigging up Strixhaven, which is always heartening to see diverse perspectives! I kinda wish I'd found the setting less....uninspiring? Like, ideally give me cards that engage me with both mechanics and flavour...but I'm far more likely to play bad cards with great flavour. than great cards with bad flavour. But, that could just be moi!~

    • @Flailkerrin
      @Flailkerrin 3 роки тому

      @@daveSoupy No argument there, I think it did a good job as a dual colour set. That's on me, should've clarified I didn't really have an issue mechanically with it. Sadly, it simply never dispelled the: Navrica, the magical world of american college stereotypes! feeling for me. A pity, but every set can't hit the mark for everyone!

  • @TheMaverickGirlGaming

    Really big on all kinds of different sets. Definitely a fan of all these special multiplayer sets but there's so many other great sets out there that can be beneficial as well in Standard and such. I don't think there's necessarily a strict best answer, but there's so many great options out there that whatever you choose to work with, you're gonna be in for a good time at your Commander table!

    I can say for someone getting back into Magic after 16-17 years the biggest help besides my LGS has been the pre-con commander decks and commander legends packs. But even then it's still not enough. It's Video's like yours and others who make Magic easier to understand. I still find myself asking questions at games and confused as to what to put into my newest commander decks to make them competitive.

    • @Flailkerrin
      @Flailkerrin 3 роки тому

      Overlooked point bout pre-con decks! I've slowly been picking up one or two a year to have an accessible handful to lend to newer players. Brewing decks is usually to be worried about after you're hooked, so skimming right past to get a game in is always a huge plus.

    I know they’ve already announced Commander Legends 2 (although it’s D&D themed), but I’d love a Commander Legends set that focuses on older mechanics, or mechanics that lack support/card numbers. Go digging for some of the less supported or weak mechanics and give them some love!

  • @hepatitis123

    Definitely agree with the "96 cards + [...]" part. That's why I've always loved my Seton, Krosan Protector deck. 1st turn Sol Ring literally slows the deck down an entire turn, so I don't even run it. Considering the fact that a large portion of the deck are creatures that produce Mana, I don't even run rocks at all, so no need for Signet.
    And as it is mono colour, I obviously don't need Command Tower lol.

      My Animar, Soul of Elements deck doesn't run Sol Ring or Arcane Signet. Mana dorks can be made cheaper with his ability that by the time I have 4 counters on him, means I'm casting all of my creatures for just their coloured mana, with about 3/4 of them only needing 1 or 2. Plus said mana dorks put more counters on Animar when I cast them that the rocks wouldn't.

    Some of my best mtg memories are two headed giant sealed standard tournaments.
    1. They weren't solved by hardcore players so people weren't sure what was best to play.
    2. A larger number of cards were available for play making the draft process more open and fun.
    3. Finally it let each player build strong focused decks. Ex. Combat focused w/interactive.

    I appreciate the points raised regarding the sets you selected. As a more casual player. I appreciate sets with a strong flavor or theme that it can be challenging to bring into Commander. And I love it when a set breaks out of the long running conventions and offers a new perspective the way Lorehold shook off the shackles of Boron. Its too easy to retread the well worn paths of existing archetypes. I really enjoy exploring other options, even though that may not be the most powerful ones.

    Just here to say Professor;
    Huge fan of your work as well as the way you analyze Magic cards. I myself have never been a MTG fan or creator (I played stuff like Chaotic, Yugioh, Shadowverse and Force of Will) and have gotten so fed up with the power creep and design flaws of many games I've opted to make my own game. But despite that HEAVY bias, I still find myself a regular consumer of your content. Your perspective and more realistic player-minded expectations keeps my mind open regarding what I can learn from Magic as I craft my own game. Granted a significant portion of that is what NOT to do....but that is still valuable. Keep up the amazing work for as long as you will. I'll still be here if you move on to another game or subject of content.

    I initially didn't care for Battlebond...until I cracked some packs. Set was amazing and hope to see BB2 or something similar in the near future.

    I have played MTG for 20 years and Battlebond and Conspiracy 1 both stand out as some of the best memories with the game I have ever had. Big agree here.

    Finished my studies a month ago, treated myself to a battlebond box. Even thoughI could only play sealed with it, it was still one of the best experiences I've had in limited, and got a sweet addition to my collector as a bonus! As someone who started playing after battlebond and conspiracy, I cant emphasise this enough: MAKE A NEW BATTLE BOND! I can't wait for the day that happens.

    I'm a newer player, but I love multiplayer and draft, so these sound so so fun. I recently bought a commander legends box, and have resleeved the cards so that I now have a cube I can draft over and over with friends! would love to see more Battlebond and Conspiracy

    For commander, I quite enjoy the the Offering Cycle (e.g Sylvan Offering). Anything that helps pay for services upfront or gets players planning combat together, really.

    I will always preach about how important and awesome Kamigawa block was for commander in the long run. Standard and draft players will tell you those sets were worthless and if commander didn’t develop it like it has, that might’ve been the case but luckily that didn’t happen and we get to celebrate the multiple legendaries/commanders and cards like Kodama’s reach. The flavour and quirky mechanics, some of which were ahead of its time, are something truly unique to that set and was basically Legends 2.

    Another amazing video. Going to be coming back to this for a while. That being said, as I am new(2 years) to magic, I thought masters was a complete mtg format for way too long because of the master's sets. Also, I have a bad feeling that we're going to get another battle bonds but it's going to be straight to amazon.
    Thanks, Prof for another great video. These get me through an interesting(testing) time.

    What a great take. Instead of focussing solely on EDH when printing new sets, Wizzards should focus on it's multiplayer element to simultaneously support other formats as well as keeping commander more accesable and "friendly". It makes so much more sense once you say it.

    I have been exploring EDH Old School lately and it's surprisingly fun! You don't have the problem with special format designed cards and you hardly have any infinite combo's, resulting in fun and diverse gameplay. If you have the cards, I would really recommend trying it out!

    God, I wish I could've played Battlebond. It wasn't as easy to get here where I play, plus there are rarely any people who are keen on playing limited so it's hard to get one fired. I'm really hoping for another Battlebond sometime in the near future.

    I did love these sets and I would love to see more of them. They have been a lot of help in filling out my multiplayer cube. However what I really want is more of the oversized card sealed products. Archenemy, and Planeschase were two of my favorite products WOTC has ever made and even Vanguards were a lot of fun all be it a bit unbalanced and the product was overall significantly underprinted. So for me I want more of all of these or even something new like it. I even liked the concepts in Explorers of Ixalan, and Horde Magic. So maybe even something like those could be fun. I just want more special sets that are actually special and encourage in person gameplay for casual events with friends. Either something that can take all night for one long and weird game or something fast to do in between cubing or commander.
