Thank you so so much for this!! I keep seeing ‘easy hacks for Ikea’, that end up needing a band saw, 16 hrs in sanding, a place to paint or stain a piece. I live in an apartment, I’m older, and can’t do most of the hacks I see. This is so helpful to find hacks that are realistic and achievable, especially doing it in bits and pieces.

This is one of the greatest ideas I've ever seen about slowly building your collection so you'll eventually have everything you want. It makes me wish I could start all over again - Bravo!

OMG YES! The Zinsser BIN Primer is the best thing ever invented! I had to get my closet repainted after my upstairs neighbour flooded it with a badly installed washing machine where he forgot to connect the water evacuation to the building's plumbing. Absolute disaster and everything had rotten inside the closet and smelled like dog piss, even after everything had fully dried up. A good coat of that primer under the main paint and all the bad smells were sealed forever. I LOVE that stuff! It's super difficult to get a hold of in Europe but definitely worth it. I'm so glad I found out about this stuff. Without it I would have had to move.

Great video! I love that this speaks to both “budget friendly” options (at least starting with Ikea furniture) as well as potentially “upcycling” and not just throwing something away - great content and not something I’ve seen a lot of people covering! Thanks!

Awwww, aren't you built pretty! This is such great information...I had no idea that a company made IKEA upgrade parts like this. I wish I had known when I was decorating my son's apartment! IKEA was a godsend at that time, lol! He has slowly been replacing his IKEA pieces with higher quality furniture, but this would have made for a nicer transition period between.

You, know I am really starting to love your fashion sense, even though I really haven't given it a whole lot of thought before. I really love your suit. And I guess I do like the earrings. I love the genie vibe you seem to give off, especially in that interesting chair. I'm kind of on the fence about the earrings, but I'm starting to warm up to them more. Personally, I prefer only silver, gold, or authentic gemstone earrings. But... because of the relatively rare man who has worn those particular earrings first, I guess... in the male universe, they conjour up different communication and meaning than for a woman, so... that might affect whether you would wear that or not. We're definitely transitioning to a whole new look especially for men, and I... am not 100% certain about how I feel about certain choices, but I am impressed with your style. I don't think we're really at a point in time when it is 100% okay for men to get away with wearing anything they choose unless they are transgender or something... which sort of an odd thing in itself, because I mean, WHY does it matter to anybody??? but... it DOES, and to ME... and... well. It's just a weird time. But I really love your style and design aesthetic. I guess women aren't really allowed to wear anything they choose to work and in public and stuff either, though, although they definitely have a lot more freedom and can get away with a lot more than (heterosexual) men. One thing I'm certain of, is I do prefer to be heterosexual and I don't think it's a good idea to explore the other sexualities. Privately, I think that could be conducive to insanity. But, in this day and age, we can only look after ourselves, I guess... and we just do what we want to do. I probably shouldn't even breathe any of this. I'm sure someone like RuPaul would not be amused by me what-so-ever, but I personally hope I never meet him (and I wouldn't be that sad if you didn't either, even if it IS one of your dreams). But I do think you have a gift for creating truly attractive and pretty things, whether it's a beautiful room or a nice outfit and that you're very smart.

Good content. I love to reinvent. It brings a fresh look to something that can be old and dated. Hopefully this advice inspires others to think outside the box and not just for Ikea furniture.

Dear Design Daddy. If only you'd released this a day or two earlier! BEFORE I started painting my Ikea Tyssedal chest of drawers. 🤣🤣 (How inconsiderate of you 😁).
Sigh. But never mind, all is not lost. Following your video, I took my fine sandpaper and resanded the undercoat, but not gingerly as I would have done before, I really went for it and where the paint came off I sanded with vigour, as I had clearly missed those spots first time round. TBH I was surprised that so much of the paint stayed on! Grr I also have shellac flakes and didn't even think of using using shellac. But at least the undercoat is an 'all surface intelligent undercoat/primer,' so I hope it self-aware and does what it says on the tin! ✌✌

Hey DD, Luv your Burgundy suit! I had one way back in the 1960's and wore it a lot. (I was in my 20's so yes I'm OLD.) Enjoyed the hacks for the Ikea furniture. In the early 200'0's I switched our my Billy Bookcases for a wall full of other Ikea storage (Can't remember the name but it started with an H) I still have it and use it in both my family room and my office. It was a very short lived series and I was lucky to get it. I just replaced most of the Family room furniture and it surprising how will the old Ikea blends with the new decor.

Oh wow! I had no IDEA all the neat things you can do with IKEA furniture. That is WONDERFUL. So the furniture can change with YOU when you decide you like something else. Which... I seem to do. But I don't part with things easily. Well... I kind of do, because they tend to disappear whether I want them to or not, but I get over it when that happens. I've learned the hard way, it is very EXPENSIVE and honestly even dangerous to your health to have too much stuff, which is when it becomes very GOOD to have a kleptomaniac help you move. Oh brother. As things get better and better and better... decisions get harder and harder.

Super-informative video! I love me some IKEA. and IKEA hacks, and I own 3 of the 4x2 and 2 of 2x2 brown/black Kallax units that I'd like to turn into something that's, well, past basic. Do you know of any companies like Nordic Interiors which have products that can help transform Kallax units?

I think a lot of us started at Ikea, no shame in that. But even in my days of shopping there, I used to think...why am I handing over my 'minimal, dry' hard earned £$ on this pack of chipboard!. But if your talented at turning this stuff around, it's all worth it.

Please, please, Phoenix, excellent Design Daddy, drop the background music! I love you without that distraction but even the first few moments with background music are painful. Second, it's 2.2 children. Keep on keeping on - you definitely have so much to contribute to the design game. Here's hoping that you get to my other favourite Canadian (Nick Lewis) at 550k viewers (lol even if you're from Ontario and Nick is a BCer - as am I). Thanks for the ant-cat comments (I'm allergic and cats are evil but all my besties have always been rabid cat lovers so if you love cats I love you)!
