When the invasion of Poland began on september of 1939, Franco and Salazar tried to be mediators between both sides without success, since they believed that a war in Europe would only benefit the rise of URSS on the long term. At that time, Franco had a meeting with his generals where he warned them that if this war lasted too long, it would only be a matter of time that the "inexhaustible" end up defeating the "invincible". However due to the fast victories of Germany in Norway and France, Franco declared the country "non-beligerant", genuinely was thinking of joining the war alongside the Axis at some point between august and october of 1940. When both him and Hitler had their meeting in Hendaya on the 23rd of october, planned by both their ministers Serrano Suñer and Ribbentrop, things didn't go well as expected; Franco demanded weapons, weath and raw materials, the promise of having Gibraltar back and some of France's former colonies. Hitler wasn't interested that much on that matter and Ribbentrop previously told Suñer that if Spain had to enter the war they had to give them one of their islands in Baleares in order to stablish a base and cut the british access to the Mediterranean, which was an unaceptable term for us. Also there was also Admiral Canaris, who was secretly contacting Franco, reporting that Great Britain wasn't going to surrender any time soon, and even Mussolini and the italian fascists understood much better than the germans that Spain's entrance wasn't a smart choice due to their poor state. At the end, Franco was more worried to secure the reconstruction of Spain after a brutal civil war and the Blue Division, led by my great-uncle Muñoz Grandes, was sent as a payment for the asistance given to us in the civil war.

1) The hymn of the Spanish "legionarios" is "I am the boyfriend of the dead" and “Viva la Muerte“ or "Cierra España" is their war cry.
2) In the Krasny Bor battle 5900 Spanish troops stop the attack of 38,000 Russians. They lost around 3500 men, but they kill more than 1/3 of the enemy troops and keep their positions.

The "Bridgegrooms of Death" nickname actually comes from the Spanish Legion, Franco's and Milan-Astray's men that fought in the Rif and crossed the stretch of Gilbraltar when the Civil War began. It's still used by the Legion today.

"If you see a German soldier who is unshaven, in an unbuttoned tunic, and drunk, do not rush to arrest him, most likely this is a Spanish hero" is the actual quote. Far from the romantic way many spanish like to describe themselves while citing the war.

Hitler: So will you be helping us in the war?
