Sincere and gently elegant, this was a special kind of folk music expression, just between old friends.

This is really something. I never even knew that Nanci Griffith and Dave Van Ronk ever performed together. Thanks.

Nanci is one of the greatest singers, songwriters and guitar players on the planet. Saw her twice in Los Angeles back in the 1990s. And Van Ronk--the self-styled "Mayor of McDougal St. Two giants.

Was it the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles where you saw Nanci Griffith?
I was at one of her concerts there so we may have been there at the same time. Only time I ever saw Nanci in concert.

Wow,what a beautiful version. One of those songs that if the vocal is fragile like it deserves to be delivered you can't keep from crying.

sad that we lost Dave Van Ronk in 2002 and Nancy Grifith in 2021 ... Van Ronk performed this song at Phil Ochs tribute concert memorial in 1976. I saw Van Ronk perform multiple times in the Village.

the version he performed at Phil Ochs' memorial was my favorite. As far as I know, it's only recorded on film, and used in the terrific Och's biodoc, Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune - very moving. Von Ronk was an amazing interpreter of the folk and blues traditions, and stayed true to the genres.

I once heard DVR introduce this song as 'A song I stole from Bob Dylan who stole it from me."

      Actually
Dave wrote this song and Dylan stolid it from him.

@verbaud Certainly Nanci is such a singer. She is always honoring those who influenced her, and mentoring those who will come after.

Two of my favorite artists who I never would have thought had collaborated. I'd like to see Nanci and Van Morrison. Both having worked with the Chieftains.
