  • Bertie and I take you for an early autumn walk in the garden to look at the chaste tree, Vitex Angus-castus and why it’s called ‘Monk’s Pepper’, beautiful Hydrangea aspera ‘Trellisick’, intriguing tree Alangium platanifolium with its small fuchsia like flowers and we end up with stunning Kniphofia rooperi. On the way we admire the froth of scented flowers of Kalopanax septemlobus which are a magnet for insects and Grevillea victoriae from the mountains of south east Australia.

Your Dahlia looks quite at home with the Geranium. My brother used to get given a lot of plants by his patients and I know that they are very special to him. I really like the chaste tree as the flowers look very similar to those on a buddleia. I can see that the bees love it.

Thank you for caring for the vole's life. Voles and such animals actually perform important functions in our gardens such as aerating the soil and providing food for larger prey animals. Of course, the vole's life is intrinsically valuable. : ) But most humans are too stupid to know that. It's pleasant to see someone who does. : )
