The man from the age of big racks explains why large rigs aren't his thing.
Steel: hard metal. Panther: one of the most ferocious animals. Put them together, and you have perhaps the greatest band of the 21st century. And, hot off the release of their latest, most ass-kicking album ever, Steel Panther is re-invading America. While in Nashville, before they played a blistering set for a packed crowd at Marathon Music Works, Panther’s lead guitarist Satchel invited PG’s John Bohlinger to soundcheck to show off his mighty rig.

Credit to Bollinger. He didn't cut anything out.
Best interviewer
It’s a good analogy
I didn't realise that he doubled as editor, too.
I didn't realise that he doubled as editor, too.
He was so serious 😂
I don't know if Satchel is more amazing as a guitar player or as a comedian. He's so freakin' hysterical with that talk of an Artificial Intelligence chick of the future.
I always thought there's always a hint of humor in music somehow. Like I can definitely feel that with Metallica because as people they have good sense of humor as well
A legend
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
He’s honestly one of the best only an idiot would dislike him. Makes me so sad that people all a sudden hate on steel panther cos their older, like bruh u want them to turn into a country band or something 😭
Satchel's playing is incredible.
Yooooooo Dean Lamb let’s gooooooo
Dean Lamb's playing is incredible.
low standards
Steelspire... Arch panther collab
That spark in Satchel's eye when he stumbles on a random vulgar tangent and decides to just go with it
This is honestly the most serious I've ever seen Satchel. LOL
That’s exactly what I was thinking! He pretty much stayed on point. Usually he’s off the rails immediately and you can’t get him back!
@@gibsonguitarplayer
This dude is a phenomenal guitar player
First discovered him in The Atomic Punks. Had NEVER heard anyone mimic EVH so closely before him. I WAS BLOW'D AWAY!!!
@@kojam1 the only other person I’ve heard do EVH as closely is Dweezil..
Russ has monster chops!
@@addicted2tone349 The Dweeze!! 👍
Check out the Australian group who does Van Halen 1 from beginning to the end. DUDE ON GUITAR IS I-N-S-A-N-E! To date, closest EVH mimic'r! 😱
You joking right?
@@kojam1I saw that, its insanely good 👍

“Amp’s?! We don’t need no stinkin Amp’s!!” - Satchel the Great… First of His Name
UHF??
I could listen to Satchel, play guitar and talk shit for hours and still be entertained. The dude is amazing. :-)
He's prob the best guitarist on the circuit. I see a LOT of great shredders but he's consistent & every time he solos I see something new.
I love how he still has the 80s vibe and style
Satchel is so funny! Great guitarist, awesome musician, seems a very cool guy!
Wow, it's great to see the same model of Amplifire that I use in a live touring rig!
They're great and don't get enough recognition. Would love to have Satchel's settings as I have an Amplifire as well.
@@Scott__C On the old Rigdown of Satchel (maybe 2017), they show her EVH 5150 III. And you can see the settings that he was using on that time in a live gig. You can start from there.
@@thiagosullivan Thanks!
@@Scott__C Something like Red channel, Gain between 5-6, Low beetween 6-7, mid 7, high 7, volume 4, presence 5
Same here, and I use the 5150 too, it's an incredible unit.
I remember finally getting a Marshall stack, and the sound engineer told me to turn it the other way around, because it was too loud.
Dave Ulbrick of Ulbrick amps taught me that.
Great dude.
I like how he's only half in character.
This man never fails to make me laugh
Saw them at Whisky a few weeks ago. Satchel sounded great. Didn't even know he wasn't using an amp.
10 years ago when recording an album everyone wanted to use a plug in for guitar tones because it was easier and I did not agree so the engineer and singer said if you can listen to these tracks to tell us which amps are live and which are plug ins then you can use a live amp and we will stop arguing, they played some songs and I pointed them all out, if ur a guitar player with a good ear it wasn’t hard to tell back then. But when the kempers and stuff like that got popular it was a completely story.
Ever see that meme with the timeline with the line 6 pod (kidney bean) up through today's modellers and it says "20 years of saying it sounds just like the real thing!"? haha
More power too him although as famous as they are use a Helix or AX-FX dude
@@kane6529 Atomic uses the same DSP chip as in the AXEFX. It's a secret gem. I have the helix as well as the Amplifire. Amplifire sounds better for amps. Helix obviously has better options on effects with the exception of compressors and delay. Both of these are better in Amplifire IMO
@@tah5w whatever tickles your pickle and keeps you rocking
John, as always handles that like a pro lol
I bought the EHV iconic 40w 1x12 combo amp, kinda impressed. Pulled the back cover off and way more guitar midrange punch. Took out the EVH 16ohm speaker and installed an old music man Eminence 12 inch 4ohm speaker and switched the impedance sw to 4 ohm. Chugs good now.😊
I wish this was an option back when I gigged. Front of house system wasn't what it is now. Playing bass meant I had the biggest, heaviest rig to lug around.
But look how buffed you are now! You're the only guy from your band that can take your shirt off at the beach and see your feet when you look down. You, sir, have no guitar-gut. You Strong Like Bull!! No! You strong like Bass Player!!!
You always could just plug bsss into the PA to be fair. Thats how Motown did it
@@Ukraineaissance2014 "Motown"? Which band is he in? 😂
Satchel interviews are always great but this clip surprised me. Seems more and more great guitar players are trying/using the digital amp modelers Guthrie Govan and Nitra Strauss to name a few others. Crazy how good these have gotten in the last 10 years.
less money to be made cause gigs are dying cause of cultural changes,so instead of hauling around huge 4x12 cabs with heavy af amp heads which needs trucks and expensive plane fees for cargo a little suitcase is a winner and tbh they sound great now.
im considering getting rid of my gear and switching to software.
Indeed, those things are impressive. Paul Landers (Rammstein) also gets his massive sound from a tiny box. Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) also made the switch.
@@mountainousterrain1704 I saw Maiden last year and could see Marshall heads in back for the guitars, but didn't know Steve Harris switched to modelers. Where did you see that?
I would Never sell my pedals or Equipment, because I enjoy turning dials, LOL.....I still have a modeller for simplicity, but I Still mainly use my old shit.
Some of the guys are actually playing through a lap top with a foot pedal to control their effects and just run it through the PA system.
I was just waiting for the interview to go off the rails!
Didn’t take long 🤭🤭🤭
His stick routine is always anticipated 😮
Premiere Guitar, I love you for posting this uncensored lol
So glad you didn’t cut this. 🤟🔥 💯
Great tone!
God bless PG for not censoring this beautiful content!
And you never have to worry about the power or conditioning affecting your tone. Winning 🤙🏻
“It’s a good analogy”
Lol 😂
Best analogy EVER!!!! 🤘🎸
saw them in detroit in march....best concert of my life....im 51....he is awesome live in person....a true guitar god
Absolutely killer guitar player and awesome dude. 🤘
Dude slammed on the fight! record🍺🤘🔥
I started doing the same thing a few months ago. Went from using an amp to using a headrush mx5 into a pa. Its great if you learn how to setup the modeler properly and download some good IRs
Sounds great as usual. See you at the Key Club!!
I love this dude man he cracks me up and he is really intelligent and very wise but he makes you feel like he’s a just a regular guy which he is both is both a great dude probably a cool Ass buddy to hang with and a very Smart and experienced Guitarist. It’s all for his persona and I bet a kick out of him.
Jeff waters of anhillator does a similar thing and saves thousands on cargo charges on planes on tour. Whole amp rig in his suitcase.
About to start a tour with my AF6. Life-changer!
Love to see Steel Panther again in Vancouver 🤘🏽
Satchel is Ben Stiller of guitars
We don't have guitar or bass amps on stage. Digital drums too. Been like that for the last 10 years. In ear monitors means near zero stage sound. Perfect!
Yeah real perfect. Do you wear your pink panties and ballet shoes on stage too?
satchel was the first guy i thought of when the Friedman IRX came out. He needs to try it!!
Best Gear discussion ever....ahhh........love this guy....
But a wall of amps does look really cool though
Your tone is awesome
Sound amazing
For starters : Amp Modelers, Profilers etc. only make sense when the PA is good. That will mostly not be the case when you start performing in small unknown venues. A good Amp will always sound good. Keep that in mind
In my city your amp goes to the PA anyways so it will sound shitty no matter what
@@ClaimedEagle I should have made clear that you need a powerful Amp and cabinet (or combo), loud enough for small to midsize venues where pluging in the PA will not be necessary. If you are at a level where you play big venues, PA systems will likely be good so modelers might do the trick than.
Spoken like a true boomer. A Headrush or Boss pedal board direct to the PA will blow away your over compensating stack. And most small venue clubs have PAs. Get with the timers Boomer.
@@Charlie_B. Everything you plug into a shitty PA will sound like shit. Just like the way you talk to people who wish to help. The gear you mentioned is fantastic, and will not break your back, but if you start as a new Band you will likely play in shitty clubs with shitty PA‘s.
@@lennyramon622 good point!
I'm a GT1000 user (mostly for metal tones)but, I have a fascination for a good deluxe reverb amp with an octo fuzz in front. The vibration in my chest is like a drug
Agree with everything you said. I have a Friedman 50 watt head and 4x12. I’m 57 now and if I ever gig again I’m using my Pod Go direct into a PA. It sounds killer and probably weighs 5 pounds in its bag.
Mate. I'm 55 in 2 weeks. Looking at that Tiny Laney amp .
Using a cheap but brilliant solid state lunchbox amp through my master 30 ( which has a crackly pot or 2 ) and it still sounds brill ....
See I love the celestion speaker in that old master .
Need to get those pots sorted though!
I’m 28 and have a marshal 50w head with a 4x12 cabinet.
I eventually caved and gave modeling amps a chance. I used a vox valve tronix before and it was ok...but recently ive messed with a small fender mustang which was cheap and surprisingly good. But then i got ahold of boss katana mk2 and i absolutely love it. It took awhile to get what i wanted from it but its worth the learning curve. There was a time when i wouldnt have believed i would ever use a modeling amp so i really can't say ill never use a plugin modeler but ...as of right now i have absolutely zero interest in it. My favorite amp is still my old Fender excelsior tube amp and nothing else sounds or responds quite like it. I doubt many of you even know what it is, but its not really an amp that comes to mind when you mention high saturation gain haha. It doesnt even have an overdrive channel or an fx loop. But i drive it with a specific combination of pedals and its damn awesome. Im much more open to the idea of digital modeling but i just cant imagine using it exclusively, esp if its not part of a physical amp.
Outstanding
Bollinger is freaking amazing at this shit. He loves it
It’s amazing you reposted just this part. Haha.
This is cool. Satchel has a great sound!
Satchel unedited, thank you Premier Guitar. ❤️
This guy is hilarious but he’s also an accomplished musician. He graduated from the guitar program at the Musicians Institute in LA. It’s no slouch of a program either. 4 years of hard core study. Love this guy.
He also played for Rob Halford in the 90s!
The Atomic Amplifire is great. I have the FireBox & love it. Best bang for the buck up until the Hotone Ampero II came along. I've always hated the feel of modellers until the Stomp 2. It doesn't just sound great, but it feels like playing a real amp, which is something most modellers can't do.
Price of Amplifires about to go up. Great unit!
Seen panther and Airbourne last year in Sydney.
Modelling is great and all but airbourne were using marshall amps and stacks their tone sounded way more organic than panther
Bollinger is a super cool dude!!
I fucking love Satchel's Darkside shirt
We need the “Satchel-Musk” interview more now, than ever.
Bollinger when Premier told him his next rig rundown was Satchel...
-Fack.
Sounds like a great future!
Oddly enough those analogies really work well when describing gear 🤣🤣
I love Satchel... Funny AF!...
How is the host keeping it together here? So f#@$in funny!
He's a phenomenal guitar player and great sounds good travel rig
Lol words of wisdom from the great philosopher Satchel
Thank you for letting him be himself. Well his stage self🤘🏻
Satchel getting real, in a very SERIOUS, no fuckery, interview.
Omg, goes on and on and on and on and on......
I want one!
He’s got such a muscles he could carry easily anything😂
Never realized Satchel was such a wee little man
I love the analysis of the future of sex robots. 100% true lol
"It's a solid analogy "
Hard to argue with that tone...
Def sucks that stuff is so expensive to ship around for touring bc I get what he’s saying but tube amps will always be better. There’s a dif between in your ears loud and in your chest loud. As a listener I’m sure I couldn’t tell the difference but as a player I can feel the difference.
Agree, I just can’t do the in ears or frfr. If I’m using a modeler it’s going into the effects return of a tube amp lol
@@MattW4319 i got a quad cortex, but i still go into the fx returns of my solid state bass and guitar amp. get some great guitar tones using both.
One advantage of a high quality vintage style tube amp is that it’s relatively easy to repair since there is no circuit board. So you have that great classic tone for the rest of your life if you particularly love that amp.
@@ramencurry6672 if an amp goes down it can usually be fixed. If a processor goes down well……
@@ramencurry6672 Hughes & Kettner Triamp MKI 6L6 sitting on a full stack of greenbacks. greatest amp in the world imo. never find a modeler that sounds or feels anywhere near as good as that amp. so easy to open and easy to service/repair.
I have an Atomic FRFR speaker and blows doors by far!
Lol he says all that and then he says he's using the Amplifire 😂😂😂
top 5 best guitarist ever!
Sach looks incredible for being in his 50s
Sounds great, there is a lot of stuff that comes, and goes, and then the next thing cycle,a new updated version, prefer a good amp,as a basis, then cool pedals that can be updated for free,we all come full circle, went to a guitar store, and the backroom was full of digital stuff, like a big amp,you look in the back and a tiny module is the brains, which costs very little really to make, like a Ada rack, which was to die for in 1989,selling to peoples whims is the order of the day now, have a 1949 tube radio$40 on e-bay,10watts,what a sound, don,t want an updated version, but still keep my eye on new stuff, which have many variations, but the variation is what you play, and that can be had for free too
Needs way more commas to be readable.......
Russ is amazing. 🤘🤘
Feel the Steel ✌️🤘🏴🇦🇺
Only a dude named "Satchel" could manage to slip the term "pocket pussy" into an interview about amp modeling. 👍
I feel ya Satchel, I love my 5150 but as I get older..lugging that shit around gets old lol
This dude is Hilarious
Reminds me of Ben Stiller.
If you watch this over and over and just stare at Bollinger's face it gets funnier and funnier.
The greatest interview of all time fellas. History
Satchel should have a chat with Steve Lukather. They will surely get along lol (analogy wise)
Satchel needs to run for congress.
Definitely not a very period correct or full on rock rig. But from a business standpoint it makes perfect sense to have a simple portable rig.
When I grow up I wanna be like Satchel.
You don't have the bone structure... no one does.
@Greg Anderson speak for yourself sir.
Lol i love how hes so up to date with the culture of today 😂
I've switched to Digital for practice and efficiency........I still prefer my Marshall and pedals when I wanna Really jam......i'm still a "knob" and pedal guy.
