What is most curious to me is the willingness, or even ability, of animals to move into terriTories so significantly different than they were adapted to. Im curious about your north advantage comment. Why would that be so? The territory from lower mexico to brazil is mostly jungle. and only a few miles wide in long stretches. Would that not favor the southern animals? The worlds a wondrous place...
I think like any invasive species (including us) animals have an instinct to expand their territory, when this new area opened up to them they would have wanted to check it out. I think the reason north America had the advantage was that south America was basically an island isolated from the rest of the world and so didn't have the competitive edge animals from the north had which was connected to the rest of the world many times over the years by Beringia.
