I live in Adelaide, South Australia and we have a few cork oaks around that I've been dying to collect some acorns off. I went to collect some off a particular tree last year to find it all fenced off as it's in the middle of a carpark that was being rebuilt. Hopefully this autumn I can get some to start next year. Seeing Mikes beautiful examples has got me even more eager although it'll be many years before I can get them anywhere near looking like those. Our Winters are much colder than yours in SoCal so I'd imagine that last heavy thinning Mike was talking about would have to be done in early rather than late Autumn here.
Its early December here and weather is weird, 49F to 75F. Trees has not gone dormant yet but getting close. We will do a final trimming for this season and prepare for spring push. I'll be filming this process in the coming weeks
Wow, amazing trees!!! So do they bud back through the thick cork layer? His branches look pretty skinny compared to the trunk so they must be relatively young? If i trunk chop one, will it bud back on the trunk?
Oaks backbud on old branches and trunks only after they get cut back hard. They do throw random new branches once in awhile but not as often during drastic cuts. You do not want to large girth branch as it loses its taper
Outstanding Oak's, very nice. I have one cork oak, and I have had trouble keeping strength in lower branches as well, so your tips were great. One question though, where do you get your raw stock, are you cutting down nursery trees? Any suggestions on where to obtain material?
Thank you for watching. Luckily cork oak trees are readily available in our local area. We even have a grower for prebonsai. I do cut down nursery stock tree if the girth is something i'm look for. Or even growing it from seed.
Air layering of oaks in general is doable but a long process. Cork oak especially are tough to layer as they have a thick and resist cambium layer. If successful it usually takes several years to be able to separate.
Dear Mike. Will the Cork Oak be ok in Ohio? And where a Good Place to Buy Cork Oak and Elm trees ? Will they Ship to Ohio? Very Nice Bonsai Garden Mike. Enjoy your Retirement. Peace. Greg of Ohio

Beautiful tree collection. Quick question what soil is used for those oaks?
I’ll have to ask. But from what I remember it’s akadama scoria and pumice. But I don’t remember the ratios

Can you ask Michael advice on collecting oaks?!
You can actually contact Michael through FB. Usually Michael will grow oaks and elms in wooden boxes until they are ready for a show pot
Question: Have you done air-layering a cork oak tree? If so, any tips would be appreciated. I'm in the Fresno county.

Great video but what's the home made fertiliser recipe?
osmocote fertilizer is primarly what Michael uses.
@@BaikoenBonsai thank you for your reply but he did say Osmocote + homemade organic fertilizer replacing green king.
Where can we buy Cork bark oaks. Thank you.
Depends on what part of the country you live in. Cork Oaks are used as landscape trees

Seeds are your best choices you get to put movement into your trees; pregrown ones are usually too straight and too cylinderish
