    Hi Tom. I haven't had a large Chinese quince to work on before, but I was looking at the straight lines of the tree in general, with little or no branch tapering. I thought the tree's shape might be improved by reducing its height, possibly in the future, and by finding new lateral shoots to develop into branches lower down in the tree. It would give it a more compact look and reduce its weight for you, too.

    • @BaikoenBonsai
      @BaikoenBonsai 3 дні тому

      That’s the plan. Chinese or Korean quince are apex dominant. So forcing back budding is going to be important. I didn’t want to cut to hard to fast to lose what growth already existed.

    Is it true that you need a male for a princess to fruit? I keep reading conflicting things. If you don’t how do you encourage them to fruit?

    • @BaikoenBonsai
      @BaikoenBonsai 3 дні тому

      A single female can produce fruit. However, the fruit will be sterile or be seedless. Seedless fruit doesn’t stay on the tree for long. I’m certain it can cross pollinate with other persimmons species as I’ve been hand pollination some with edible variety to see if they will seed out

      5c or 41F, would be cold enough to put your willow ficus to drop it leaves and go fully dormant. You may want to watch how much water as it could cause root rot.
