      I have a question for you. I finished my corners some outside and inside corners) and part of my project I had to do a skim coat on a couple walls. I used the same compound for everything but the dried skim coat seems much softer and rougher than than the corners. I thinned out the compound a lot more for the skim coat than I did for the final coats on the corner. Any advice on fixing this? Re-skim coat with a thicker mixture? Anything to avoid it in the future? Thanks!

    • @vanislefaller
      @vanislefaller 6 років тому

      I forgot to mention when I am sending I am having trouble blending it in because the skim coat sands down very easily than the harder mud from the corner so its leaving a ridge no matter what I use to sand with

    • @Jonathonmaclean
      @Jonathonmaclean 6 років тому +1

      vanislefaller you want your mud fairly thin on your skim coat. Purpose of skimming is leaving as little mud on the walls as possible ( for obvious reasons ) and also to make it much easier for sanding. Hope this helps

    "Don't ask. " Been there, done that. I've been throwing mud at walls since 1970. East coast of the US Began with drywall, blueboard and old time hair plaster., even a bit of rock lath.
    Now the good part,, was an older Irishman,, that was just so good with every plaster and technique you can imagine. Right down to slaking his own lime in a barrel on the landing in the middle of the building,,, in other words,, making his own plaster. Don't ever pay him before Friday afternoon,,, liked his beer a bit much. But I learned so much from him. NOT the beer part. You have a good hand,, a pleasure to watch.

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills with us inexperienced drywall tapers. I recently started off my own painting company (which offers drywall repair), I have never had to repair or replace a corner bead, since I have only repaired small holes in the drywall (in fact, I did not even know what a corner bead was, until I typed in "Drywall metal corner repair/replacement). Thanks again for simply explaining this process and for showing us some simple tips to make this easier (such as showing us that the mud should be a little bit runny). Your willingness to share your knowledge and experience will help me look as though I will know what I am doing, if I land the drywall repair estimate.

    I'm glad I found you! Corner beads are the bane of my existence. My house had 1984 doorways all throughout the house. Actual door facings where they took doors down that went to every room, aside from bedrooms. They looked way too dated and I removed them all and did corner beads to every door facing. Now my only problem is keeping all of the members of my household from busting the crap out of them! Wreckless bunch of hooligans😂

    Thanks for your very useful and clear tutorials. I have a couple questions as to corner beads - first, what do you do when the two ends of drywall panels don't meet flush, ie one falls short of reaching the end of the other? Does the edge need to be made up or prefilled somehow? Second, how do you ensure that there is gap left to fill on the corners beads, is it just the natural shape of the corner bead that ensures this? Thanks again.

    I tried paper beads on my basement remodel and failed horribly. Every corner blistered quite badly after first fill coat. I worked in the trades as a carpenter for a number of years (hardly ever drywall except for a patch here and there) so I thought I could pull it off. My first thought was that I squeezed the paper on too hard and it was trying to pull off. But noticed that the blisters were actually over the metal corner not the part sitting on the mud strike. Like the paper delaminated from the metal! Made me wonder if material failure was the issue. Another friend from the trades said I should have applied a drier thinner first fill coat. I did use light AP for setting and fill coat. My final solution recommended from a drywall pro acquaintance was to use metal bead set in taping mud w/o nails since there was metal stud framing and double layer 5/8 rock in places. Then mesh tape and hot mud to bridge the metal with the wall. One fill coat on top of that with hot mud then topping off with light topping mud. Lots of work and was set back about a week. But my corners now seem bombproof. Next time I'll hire a pro. Getting too old for this *ish. But thanks for helping me believe I can do it lol.

    • @cy6324
      @cy6324 Рік тому

      My first few attempts with paper tape failed too. I think you need to use thinner (wetter) mud when using paper tape, and definitely do not squeeze it all out with your knife. Sometimes if I don't care to thin my mud I'll soak the paper in water before installing. Ive had 100% success with paper bonding when it is wet or when using water thinned mud.

    I apparently didn't get enough mud for all the spots to adhere, so there are some voids. 1) Should I use a syringe and squeeze in some wood glue. 2) Spray with water to get those areas wet and push the paper, hoping it wil stick. 3) Spray with water and add more mud? 4) cut out and start over? Any advice is appreciated!

    Awesome video, this helped me a lot! When you wipe out the mud with the knife, are you just wiping the paper or both the metal and paper part?

    Thanks for your vids. I've always drywalled but never mud and taped. That's not the case anymore!

    This video is great! :)
    I watched 2 or 3 videos before this one where the corner bead was already put on before the camera ever started rolling. How am I supposed to learn how to put the corner bead on if I can't watch them do it? The other youtubers just sort of talked a bit and did a little bit of mudding, but assumed that I had already put the bead on the corner.

    Back in the UK corners where made with using two trowels forming the corner between them or nailing dowel on the corners and plastering up to the dowel for a rounded edge. Modern systems are a great improvement on those old ways but they still worked good.

    your videos are great...just one suggestion. cut your bead with a forty five degree angle at the top outside corner and you wont need to add paper tape to prevent cracking, or you could tape your transitions when you tape flats.

    Awesome, thank you! Would it be possible to create a quick video of the sequence of events? For example when corner bead would be applied or when to do sanding. If using a plastic corner bead that is affixed with spray on adhesive do you apply the bead in the same step as mud on corner bead? Thanks again!
