Love love LOVE the use of the Link's Awakening cave theme for that intro. It's brilliantly woven into each of the dungeon tracks in that game, and when it suddenly appears again in the shrine music I almost burst into tears (granted this was probably also because I'd just waited in line for ten hours for the Switch launch so I was already vulnerable, but still!).

This game's atmosphere lets you believe that everyone has lives outside of their interactions with you, and that you're just a part of the world instead of its center. Huge dragons fly around and don't give much of a damn about you, even when you shoot arrows at them for materials. People walk back and forth between places and fight monsters that attack them. Hell, even the _monsters_ have lives apart from yours. If you watch a camp full of Moblins without getting their attention, they'll eat, argue with one another, etc. Right next to the Faron Tower, you'll find two Lizalfos chattering excitedly because they're so happy to have found Hearty Durians to eat. It's a world to explore, and it functions on its own.

This video's take on Link is the reason Skyward Sword, for all its flaws, has my favorite ending of any Zelda. After a game that sets up why Zelda and Ganon are at odds, being incarnations of warring deities, Link is the wildcard that defeats the evil god, and his reward is that he's reincarnated whenever the gods clash again. And even if he wins every time, he will spend every life he's got from now on at war. Skyward Sword is Link's origin story and his origin story is that he's cursed by the devil to never know peace.

    • @D.H.1082
      @D.H.1082 4 роки тому +1

Well, to be fair, we don't know what happens to most Links *after* he/they save(s) the world. It is known that once defeated, Ganon takes a very long time to re-awaken, or reincarnate. Add to that the fact that no Link that we know about has ever been in his 20s or older when he saves the world. For all we know, after achieving his destiny, Link often gets to live a full life of peace, relative to his fight to save the world.

Love it Mikey. I came back to Breath of the Wild last fall after putting it aside for no good reason when it originally came out. Obsessed over it for a good 2-3 weeks, just sucking all the marrow out I could. I started playing Zelda with Ocarina when I was 4. I learned to read with Zelda (and Pokémon). I’ve played every 3D Zelda and a few of the 2D ones.
Personally, Breath of the Wild is my favorite. It helped me get through rough times in my life more than once. I owned it for Wii U and later bought it again when I got a Switch, and it absolutely does not lose its magic on a second playthrough. I’ve been playing since launch, and I’m still finding things I’ve never seen before.

  • @abbycaldwell3166

Love the appreciation for getting this masterpiece of a game on the WiiU, since that really was my experience with Breath of the Wild. I'd had the WiiU and couldn't get the Switch version because 1) I didn't have a Switch and 2) both the Switch and BotW were sold out for a while.
I have a lot of good memories of spending afternoons sitting on the couch in the living room with the WiiU gamepad plugged in, TV turned off, because the game text is just so small. It was great. I nearly 100 percented the game and after spending a year away at college I'm ready to pick it up again. My dorm thrived on a mix of old Wii games and brand new stuff and I began to miss spending that time playing BotW. This video game me a whole lot of emotions.

I thought The Elder Scrolls IV: Skyrim was the perfect action/adventure game. I never wanted the short story to end......but then Breath of the Wild blew Skyrim out of the water (for me personally).
Both games are amazing in different ways. I have an emotional connection to both because playing them helped get me through some difficult times in my life, but Breath of the Wild really, truly hit the mark for me in so many ways no other game has (and I’ve been a hardcore gamer since the 80’s).
For me, no amount of credit and praise Breath of the Wild gets is ever going to be enough to justify the game’s perfection. It’s the perfect world you’d want to escape to just to have a “slice of life” getaway experience.

I love video games, but have carpal tunnel & can't play most of them. That said, that wasn't always true. I had an NES, but never owned The Legend of Zelda. I rented it a few times. It was freaking hard and we didn't have internet then and I have a low threshold for frustration (like, I would never play a Soulslike, because I would end up breaking my hands and my console and my television). I admired people who played it, but I was more of a Super Mario Bros. 2 person, if I'm honest. Peach FTW (unless you needed to dig; then Toad FTW). Also Arkanoid. I freaking loved Arkanoid.
I know BotW was a revelation for Zelda lovers, and I'm so happy for you all. It's a beautiful and engrossing game, perfect for... /gestures vaguely at everything/
I had a Wii, but not a Wii U; don't have a Switch because my hands would never forgive me. Been playing a lot of PSVR during the apocalypse, though. Gave myself tennis elbow playing Beat Saber. Fun times.
Enjoy riding the horses and parachuting off of things and cooking with the adorable little cooking song.
I never knew there were batteries in NES cartridges, & I was in high school when that thing came out.

You didn't even go into how incredible this Zelda was, and I mean Princess Zelda. She's devoted, anxious, incredibly curious and intelligent. You can feel the weight of all the previous games on her shoulders and the expectations from her place as "Zelda". Through her, we also get the most defined Link. We learn he's a huge glutton who chose silence because he doesn't want others to ber his emotional burdens. Zelda's story carries the emotional core right to the end, where she gets to deal the final blow and *end* this saga in a way that none of the previous heroes have. It's finally the legend of *Zelda* .

I think there’s even more to be said about how the story of the past era comments on the “eternal roles” of Link and Zelda. Each of them suffers acutely from the weight of the expectations placed on them by Hyrule’s legends and they’re constantly doubting themselves (such as Link consciously choosing not to talk to people because he’s worried he’ll say something wrong and Zelda just destroying herself emotionally because she can’t do the Triforce magic she’s supposed to). Their only real solace in the midst of it all is each other’s company, but by the time they realize this it’s too late and everything is coming crashing down around them. Arguably, it’s precisely _because_ of Hyrule’s obsession with these legends and the resultant crushing pressure on Link and Zelda that they aren’t able to stop Ganon the first time, and it’s only after they find each other once again 100 years later that they’re able to pull together and overcome it all.

I’ve never played a Zelda game before in my life except for maining Link in Smash Bros at friends’ houses (I was a PlayStation kid and I still don’t have a PS4). I’ve clocked in many hours on Skyrim and still not even gotten close to finishing the main story line but that was my favorite game for a very long time, but it was missing some of the puzzle aspects that I enjoyed from my other favorite games/game franchises: Uncharted and Prince of Persia.
Finally when quarantine hit I bought a Switch and BOTW because it looked amazing and my friends who ARE big Zelda fans wouldn’t shut up about it.
I had played it at a friend’s house briefly but didn’t have the intimate time with the game that I wanted... I didn’t even get to a second shrine on The Great Plateau.
Finally, I had my own console and a HELL of a lot of free time on my hands. Roughly an hour after finally leaving the Plateau I decided this was the perfect game for my relatively casual taste in video games and that it’s my favorite game of all time so far. Eventually I found and completed all the shrines and defeated Ganon and although it does feel slightly emptier now, I can still wander Hyrule aimlessly for hours on end without getting bored. I’ve also been rewatching all the Movies With Mikey so this video was perfect. Thank you for adding more context and depth to, what I consider, an already perfect game.
BOTW is so good that every other Switch game I’ve downloaded has been quickly abandoned so I can continue to murder Bokoblins and uncover more Korok Seeds. I’m gonna buy the DLC pack very soon.
Nothing compares to this game, but maybe I just really fucking suck at Dark Souls.

I just wanna make a quick note on the Link/Freeman connection. Freeman is effectively mute in his games, though to my memory it's never addressed by any other characters (other than maybe a passing, "Man of few words, huh?" kinda comment). Link, however, is treated as a speaking character by the NPCs. They ask him questions, and react as if he responded. There's a discussion to be had about the idea that Link's reactions to things shouldn't "override" the players, but it's a different tactic they took with the Hero of TIme compared to the One Free Man. It's definitely more Nintendo-y.

  • @brad42334

Link speaks in this game, as evidenced by 2:40. I don't think it is ever shown that he isn't allowed to speak; it is just rarely written out. Usually it comes in the form of a character responding to Link's implied questions or explanations. For example a character might say something like "What happened?" and then "Oh that's terrible!" suggesting that Link answered between text boxes. Link even gives vocal commands to Macar and Medli in Wind Waker.
As for character traits, Link likes to sleep in and is "a bit of a glutton" according to one of Zelda's diaries.

I may be overanalyzing but, the number of smashy smash pretty pretty jewel pots mean that in the game they're not valuable? like take something we think is useless now or so common that if it broke it sucks, but you can go down to target and get more. so wouldn't that be the case in the game, minus not having a target in which you have to make them. I don't know I need coffee hope you have a good day I'm gonna research the pots more. Sorry I'm not good at comments

Link is not a blank slate or a vessel for the player. Characters that are that need to have possible development, and he doesn't have any. Games where you customize your character and then have meaningful dialogue choices are vessels for the player. Link is not that at all. He does not need to eat, drink or sleep to survive. He does not need friends, he does not need comfort, he does not need *anything* except a villain to fight. His courage and emotions cannot fail him. He has none of the flaws of being a person, so he is not a person *at all*. You might feel lonely, or awe-struck, or comforted by the amazing world, but Link is not. Link doesn't care about anything. I'd question if he's even self-aware. Link is a quest-solving elemental.

Referring to a UA-cam video's 'Description' as 'the doobly' or 'the doobly-doo' is something I've only ever heard one other person say, which is Matt Colville.
Is this a reference I'm not getting? Where did this strange and funny phrase come from? Is it just a coincidence? Is Mikey a fan of Colville? Are Mikey and Colville both fans of someone or something else?

The term dooblydoo is an older one. A lot of people who were around when UA-cam started getting big mid to late 2000s tend to use the term. I think it was popularized or invented by John and Hank Green who were known as thevlogbrothers.
