HOW I BUILT A FAUX VENT HOOD FOR $6!!! ) Kitchen Cabinet Makeover Pt 2 | Home Reno Ep. 10

  • Watch as I transform the small cabinets above the microwave (that nobody ever uses) into a faux vent hood! The best part is it only cost me $6! I challenged myself to use only materials that I had leftover from other projects. I ended up having to buy more joint compound but I'm still counting it as a win!
    I also switched out the old black microwave for a new updated stainless steel model. Then I built a custom frame for the new faux vent hood and covered it in drywall. Next I covered the drywall in joint compound and sanded it smooth. Finally I tred a paint technique to look like plaster. Let me know how you think it turned out!

    I am so glad I found your channel. I have already watched about a third of your videos. You are very inspiring and have great ideas. I want to give you one piece of advice that my dad gave me. He said never stand directly behind the wood that you are cutting when using a table saw. If the wood kicks back, it can cause serious injury to you. Always stand to the side of it. He was a carpenter for 40 plus years. I hope it doesn't sound like I am lecturing you because I don't intend it to sound that way. I just would hate for you to get hurt. Thanks for the awesome videos.

      🤣🤣🤣 thank you! I told my husband you said he should appreciate me and he just laughed. My grandpa was actually the one to introduce me to tools about 8 years ago so I’ve had lots of practice. I have a q&a video where I talk about that a bit more if you’re interested. Thanks for watching!

    It looks amazing just don't know why exactly did you build it.. Is it just for the aesthetics? Does it have any function at all? I think you just enjoy building stuff 😊 and where and how did you learn to do all this... Amazing 😍

    • @KelseyRomitoDIY
      @KelseyRomitoDIY  2 роки тому +9

      Yep, just for aesthetics. The microwave is what actually does the venting. I never use those small cabinets above the microwave so I figured I would make it look pretty.
      And you’re absolutely right- I love building stuff. How did I learn this stuff? My grandpa was an engineer who did woodworking and I asked him to teach me some things and I just fell in love with it- LOTS of trial and error.
      Also, I google A LOT. 🤣🤣

      I wish I could post pictures on here so I could point to it with an arrow. It vents on the very top front of the microwave. If you look closely you’ll notice I left a small gap in between the microwave and the “vent hood” to leave plenty of space for air circulation.

    This is pretty and a good idea.. but I am wondering, if you have to unplug or plug in the microwave , how would you do that since no opening for the outlets?

    • @KelseyRomitoDIY
      @KelseyRomitoDIY  2 роки тому +1

      Good point. This occurred to me after I built it. I just replaced the microwave but should I need to unplug it for some reason, I would cut a small hole in the side of the cabinet to access the outlet.

    I only wish that DIYers would not use misleading information to draw in watchers of content. In this case, the $6 cost was only possible because you, as a DIYer, had a bunch of leftovers to use from other projects. Honestly, the screws alone in this project likely cost $2. The wood would have cost (as a from scratch project) at least $20, and that is without using laminate flooring to cover the bottom piece. This is a beautiful and inexpensive project. The faux $6 was unnecessary to draw attention.

      I see your point. Definitely shouldn’t assume that everyone has a garage full of random project materials like I do.

    This makes no sense. For me, the range hood is one of those necessary evil that one I would do away if not for its actual benefit of sucking away heat, airborne grease and odors. Range hood serves a real function and aesthetic is not it. So yeah I would have one but if there's a way to hide it I would. Needless to say, for me your kitchen is already good as it was. Your effort could have been channeled to installing some fans and ducts to serve the function.

  • @danielhh47
    @danielhh47 2 роки тому

    Wait so you built a fake vent hood over a microwave that doesn't actually vent outside and in doing so also got rid of a perfectly working cabinet?
    You could have added a real vent if you were this bored! Form over function it seems. 🤔

    • @KelseyRomitoDIY
      @KelseyRomitoDIY  2 роки тому +6

      Yep. And no I couldn’t have added a real vent (without a ridiculous amount of work) because this is an interior wall. Not sure about you but I never use the small cabinets above the stove or fridge because they aren’t easy to access and hold basically nothing. Also, if you’ve seen any of my other videos, you would know I added tons of storage above the refrigerator and also a built in hutch for lots of storage so the cabinet above the microwave was no big deal to sacrifice.
      But by all means make a snarky comment without having all the information if you are this bored.
