  • Simple custom range hood for beginners. In an earlier video I went over building the range hood frame. In today's video I finish it up by putting the boards around the outside. We went with a 7" MDF plank and a nice piece of birch for the skirt and top.
    The 10 degree angle I talked about while building the range hood frame comes into play during this finishing steps as well.
    Key points:
    1) YOU CAN DO THIS
    2) Do not rush
    3) Build a good frame first
    4)Choose you facing material
    5) decide on your angles. With planking I recommend using the same side tilt and front tilt angle. This will make lining up the plank seams easier.
    6) Don't get discouraged if you have gaps in your corners. they can be filled.
    7) Measure twice then cut

    Thanks so much for the explanations of every detail. I literally took my laptop to the garage and pushed play and pause to each step. And I made my own vent hood. I made it like the first one you made. I played and paused that video too lol.Thanks bunches. You saved me a lot of time, wood, mistakes and a headache.

      I purchased a 30" Valore hood from Costco for about $200. I tried to find the link for you but they must not carry that exact one anymore. Any hood should be fine. Just make sure the button controls are on the front or underneath. If on the front, you will need to make the frame a little bigger in front to accommodate your fingers in reaching the controls.

    Good inspiration, I am going to build a custom range hood myself. One thing that was not mentioned in the video is the height you can install it. Most building code requires around 30" above the stove. But you must check your stove manufacturer for details. These numbers are only for full metal hoods. If you use combustible materials, the requirement can be different. For our30" kitchen range, the manufacturer required the distance be at minimum 36" from the stovetop if wood cover is used.

    • @athomeandtravel995
      @athomeandtravel995  3 роки тому

      Now that is a great question. From what i do know is all locations focus on certain aspects of the building codes. In my area the distance between the range and combustible range hood material was never a concern. I would however check the code and stick to it if the building inspector focuses on that. Just for reference my distance between the two is 26" and the range hood never seems to get hot.

    Wow, what a great job. I am unfortunately not A DIYer, so I'd have to ask someone to build something like this. A few Qs:
    1/Don't the materials used have to be safe in case of fire? Non combustible? If using wood how would you treat it so it's not flammable?
    2/ Is there a minimum distance between the hood and the hob?
    3/ Would I hire a general handyman or a specialist carpenter to build this for me?
    4/can this be fitted on top of an existing typical metal hood?
    5/ How would you access the controls?
    6/ How would you replace a faulty vent that's covered by this hood? Would the whole thing have to come off? In that case is there a way to build and slot it in so that it just comes off like a sleeve (fully intact) when necessary? And goes back on as easily.
    Sorry for all these Qs but no one seems to address these issues in their videos 😬😳

    • @athomeandtravel995
      @athomeandtravel995  2 роки тому

      All great questions. Because you are not building one yourself and hiring it out, I would suggest asking these questions to your contractor. To answer a few though, No, the wood does not have to be special. It is far enough away from the heat source to be considered an issue. TO access the controls o front just make sure the frame is built about 1.5" out from the controls. That way you will have room to get your fingers in there. If you have an exposed current metal hood, a contractor should easily be able to build around it. Again, contact someone and they should be able to assist you.

      @@athomeandtravel995 i have done a number of custom hoods for people. this helps keep the cost of the renovation down as it is cheaper for me to build something unique than buy what they want. what is important though is to find a hood that has a 90 degree front to the bottom plane of the hood. the front face should go straight up and not lean back at an angle. also, if you find a hood with controls that are on the bottom of the hood, then you can make the surround tight to the range hood and have a real custom look. these hoods are quite easy to find through big box stores

      In the video i mentioned to keep the angles the same or else the shiplap wont match. Unfortunately with a 10 and 20 degree angle matching will be a problem. You may have to adjust one of the angles or possibly fudge the spacing for the shiplap.

      It all depends on the look you are going for. If you like the angles I used, go ahead and use them for a 36" hood. The appearance will be the same. You will just be a little wider at the top unless you decide to make it taller.

    Love it. When you have a moment here is my question. I'm redoing my kitchen and always wanted a custom wall range. The place in purchasing the cabinets is pricing a hood from the cabinets I'm ordering. My stove is 30inc and he informed the smallest the vendor hood is 36" frame and I'd use a 30" ventless insert (my house does not have any outside vent). The carpenter who will do my install is an excellent carpenter with wood and building. A's I'm going through this process I'm thinking custom maybe a better design because it will be a better focus point.
    Anyway in my research I'm seeing different price ranges for inserts. What suggestions do you have regarding the brand insert??
    I've seen price ranging from a couple hundred dollars to thousands.
    Thanks in advance for the listening and advice.

      Glad to hear you will be going with a custom range hood. To save money we did not use an insert. They are kind of pricy. we used a under cabinet range hood and built the wood around it. We purchased it from Costco for around $200. It is a 400 cfm so it does suck a lot of air. It does also have the recirculation option.

    How do you access switches on the front of the hood? Does the angled face of the hood allow you to still access the buttons with the flat faced wood trim? Great video, thanks!

    • @athomeandtravel995
      @athomeandtravel995  4 роки тому +1

      Great question. We used a regular under cabinet range hood (much cheaper) and not one of the range hood inserts. You are correct. Accessing the controls needs to be planned out when making the frame. The range hood we chose from Costco had the front face angled with the switches right in the front. What I did was made the side boards about 1.5 inches longer. That way when I fastened the front skirt board it gave me plenty of clearance to get our fingers in there to work the controls.

      You got this. It will really make a statement in your kitchen. Don't get frustrated if things don't line up perfectly. And when you put the facing around the frame, again, if the seams aren't perfect just use some filler and then sand everything smooth.

    I think I know the answer but I’ll ask anyway. If for some reason your hood stops working and you have to replace it. Will you have to rip all of those finish boards off to unhook hose clamp or aluminum tape from where insert is connected to pipe? That’s my dilemma so I’m trying to make an access on the side without showing to many fasteners. I guess I’m going to pocket hole it....thoughts?

    • @athomeandtravel995

      Great question. I did think about that same thing while I was building mine. I came to the conclusion if my fan stopped working I would find just a replacement fan. I would be able to replace that without having to take anything apart. I would access the fan from underneath. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I think I will see if I can find a replacement just in case.

    • @joshuaheater178

      At Home and Travel yeah that makes sense to fix from underneath. Problem for me is my family doesn’t want me to stain or put finish coat on in an existing working kitchen which makes your method impossible for me since I wouldn’t be able to seal connection from pipe to insert. Soooo access board it is. Working on it today. If I muster the courage I’ll show my results and let you know. I appreciate the videos. It helped me with how to start project. I am so sorry for not getting back with you sooner. Most range hoods are 30" standard. If you purchased a 30" your contractor could build around it making it look like 48". No one would ever know because it will be totally covered anyway. If you want a larger one I would search the internet to see what's available, No matter what you purchase your contractor will have to build around it. That I find works the best.

    • @OscarHanzely

      The minimum range hood size is determined by the stove itself. If somebody reads this this is helpful: if you purchase 48" range, you must have range hoot at least 48" wide or bigger. Cannot be smaller.
      Also when range hood insert says 48" its typicaly something like 46 3/4: or so that way it can be build in.
