I have an actual telephone headset that I jacked into with alligator clips to make recordings back in my college days ('79-'83). I gotta drag that thing out and use it in my studio. Thanx for the reminder!📞
Same here on the M201 Royer combo! One of the most versatile mic pairings for guitar amp! I love running mine through my UA 4-710 pres and blending tube and solid state. Seriously endless possibilities
I'm saving up for a 201. I'm wondering if you have found any cheaper mics to pair with it that might get in the ballpark of the royer combination? Was thinking about a used 160 or even a cascade fathead or something. I don't know, on a budget as you can see.
People don't talk about the TLM 67 because its 'ugly', so to speak. I own 2 U67's and have also owed a TLM 67 at one point, and its a great mic, honestly I 'might' like them better than the newer 67's (I absolutely prefer it to the 87). The two tone body color and that round Neumann badge (instead of the diamond) I think turns a lot of people off. If it came with the standard body as the U87/67/m269 people would be all over the TLM 67. Superficial as it is, people are like that. Neumann's marketing team should have known better.
sE and Lauten are now my favorite brands. I have the Atlantis as well and honestly I don’t need any other mic for vocals. There’s a sound for any vocalist with it.
I love the M201. To me it's the best "bang for buck" mic you can buy (at least here in germany, since we pay a little less for it) and you can use on almost anything, especially Snare, hi hats and electric and acoustic guitar.
Great collection. My only high-end mic is a TLM 67 I've had almost 15 years. It's my go-to for vocals and acoustic or classical guitar. I think you're right that it's underrated.
Can’t wait to try the m201 with ribbon approach. I do absolutely love the m201 on Tom drums. It’s like a 421 on hifi steroids. Also gotta say I love the love given to Lauten Audio. I think they’re the most forward thinking mic manf. currently out there. For character and grimy grungy approach you should really check out the scope labs periscope. You’ll want two, I believe they’re Omni and they look super cool. They have a compression circuit built into the mic itself. It’s THE explosion drum room mic sound without needing to patch in a compressor.
Interesting choices. You should check out the AEA R88A. I can't imagine living without it anymore. Guitar, Drums, Vocals, choirs, complete bands... it's magic! So natural and not as dull as the Royers. For me a must have for every studio.
Can't go wrong with the Pearlman. Gets used on 90% of the vocals here, and many of my country or Americana folks like it on the acoustic instruments too (paired with the KM184).
Love the diversity of mic flavors you have in your arsenal. I'm curious if you have considered the Sphere L22, or are you specifically trying to stay away from that or other mic modeling approaches?
Great video! I also have a pair of KM184s. I use the Audix DCLIP mic clips for them. They fit perfect and they won't break like the Neumann clips. They're also only like $10!
Hey Colt! have you tried some Microtech Gefell microphones??? I think for your style of work and the artists that you work with the UMT 70S could work great for vocals and acoustic guitars… I leave you the suggestion in case you can contact them to try their products
Here, here! Been my absolute fave mic since using one in the 90’s. I have an early MV691 body with the UM70 head. They are so small and thin that people don’t pay them the respect but OMG what a sound.
Why no Gefell or Earthworks :) two of the greatest…Can’t have too many mics! I agree on the Beta57. It’s just literally better in every way than the SM57. Thicker and more gutsy on snare with a nice snap that sets it apart from condenser overheads. Curious about the Lautens.
So glad we have newer modern mics. There was a time where we all were looking for old mics, and not giving anything new a try. I just wanted to punch anybody saying you should us a u87.... most overhyped mic ever. I rather at the time use a tlm 103 then a crappy sounding u87. Sure I just pissed some u87 owner, but oh well thats life.
You are lucky to have experienced a good microphone, I really like the microphone but don't have the chance to use an expensive one, thanks for this video...
Can’t go wrong with Audio Technica. 4040 is a fantastic mic for recording anything and from a technician’s point of view, they would have to be some of the finest engineered mics out there.
I was surprised to not see a Senheiser 421. Best bass mic ever! Also, everyone pronounces Beyerdynamic wrong lol. It's pronounced (bear)dynamic, not (buyer)dynamic Kind of a pet peeve of mine 😂
Which is your all time favorite mic for vocals from all of that mics? If you need only two for a living on an island? Which do you pick? Thank you very much. best musical regards from Germany 🤘🏻
@@brandonvalencia4544 I own both, and it really depends on the the vocal. At some level it comes down to tastes and not quality, because they're both fantastic quality built mics.
Hey colt loving your videos. I was wondering if you could shootout a diy mic kit of maybe a Neumann and and compare it to the nuemann microphone you have. I was thinking of making my own microphones when I start my studio and wanted to know how much of a difference it would be of I attempted to make it rather than buying that microphone kind of how capi has the option for selling their 500 series products as a diy kit
Been trying to reach out to send you some shiny new ones from Hammer Audio to play with! What's the best way to get in touch I've been trying email with no luck.
From his collection Royer up close and an Atlantis in Omni in the room would be lovely. The M201 up close and royer in the room would be a nice dark sound too or just the DP47 for a classic jazz sound
I store all of my microphones in the bags, boxes, or cases they came with. A few mics that are almost always left out on stands have dust covers on them. With ribbon mics that have long non-rigid ribbons I store them in their cases standing vertical so the ribbon doesn't sag over time.
$160 for a mic clip?!? User Tip - If you add scotch tape to the inside of the mic clip (or around the mic itself while installing then remove once the clip passes over), in many cases you avoid the scratching/marking up on the mics.
Just curious if you've ever tried either the Townsend Labs Sphere l22 or the UA Sphere DLX since they acquired Townsend Labs? What's your take on those mics. I was considering that or the Lauten Atlantis.
If you're in a situation where you need 1 or 2 mics that will cover all of your recording needs the UA Sphere system is a fantastic option that will deliver a wide variety of sounds with a quality result. If you're like me and many others, we need a sizeable collection of mics just to capture large instruments, like drums, as well as entire bands at one time. In my case the UA Sphere would be an extra tool in the box, but it wouldn't make or break any sessions as I already have many of the key mics it's replicating and often times I have at least 2 of each. In needing a sizable collection, I already have many of the go-to options people might consider for their main vocal mic.
Good call. They are great and unique! It’s like the best aspects of dynamic and condenser in one mic. Mine got stolen but I use a Neumann KSM104 which is the closest thing I’ve found to it and cheaper. Both fabulous.
Good video! I always get lucky watching these types of videos. I would be the happiest person if someone gave me just one microphone to keep me motivated and keep going; For many years, I have been writing music now, but without music accessories or going to the studio.
OK, for once I kinda wanted to hear... "Oh, this is a Radio Shack RS-1000, I bought in 1990, I tried on over heads, - it sucked, tried on guitar cabs - it sucked, tried it on vocals with a cloud lifter, it sucked. Never buy this mic!"
SM7Bs are medeocre in my opinion. People can't hear past the hype, they're basically a fashion accessory. One must be seen with this mic on YT etc. and they're clumsy looking, which people cannot seem to stop playing with, adjusting. They're clealy poorly designed, a poor concept with that pigtail and all. My sonic problem is with this bass influence, it's muddy and sort of rough sounding, poor quality, unrefined. And people often have them set where it is completely oversaturated. There's a general obsession with bass for spoken word, which is annoying in itself.
I am a network radio radio program producer. I have used the SM7b frequently for promos and other VOs. For my voice, I like the bass flat setting with the presence boost employed. If the mic distance is worked properly it sounds great. Depending upon how the voice track is used, like most mics, some post EQ in the DAW along with some processing gets the best out of this mic. For the record, I also use a TLM103, a Shure KSM32 and an MKH 416. The SM7b is in good company. All of these mics have unique sonic signatures. No one mic is best for all applications expect maybe the Lauten Atlantis , which I have yet to use.
Hit 👍🏻 for overuse of the words “Very” and “Super” 😜😂

Love my Lauten 357!
Why didn’t you test the warm audio Wa 8000 ? I am very curious why? It’s their flagship mic at the moment and it sound damn good in my opinion.
I think a C414 would go nicely with ur collection I like it a Lot 💯
Whats your go-to for a drum kit setup? ie. Kick Snare, Toms etc.
I really want that Manley but it’s too damn expensive for me :/ That Eden is also a beautiful thing! I love everything made by Lauten Audio.

As a first mic for male vocals. Which mic would you go for, Manley Reference or the Lauten Atlantis?
My first for Rap vocals was an SM57 and after 8 years my decision aged pretty well.

it's crazy with all the mics in your possession, the vocal track on this video is pretty terrible. Have you heard it?

8:33... $160 for a fawkin mic clip???? What are they made out of?
Good question - the Audix DCLIP works for the km 184 ...$10 at Sweetwater
I came here to say this. The Audix D-Clip is fantastic and will work with a lot of small diaphragm pencil condensers.
So basically this is a Lauten Audio commercial with sprinkles of other microphones to not make it too obvious.
