Was this started from a computer then led to a call?

That's how it usually starts but there are direct calls as well. I myself have received three calls and so has my elderly Mother. I've taught her not to entertain such calls and the dangers involved.

I picked lady up from her house took her to the bank waited a hour at the bank I went inside because was taking too long she assured me that she will pay me just to wait than she will need a ride to Walmart when we got to Walmart she got out and I see that she is upset and I over heard her telling her what to do with cash and not to speak to the driver or let any one know I asked if she was ok and she said yes and I said mam if ur sending money to some one it’s a scam at this point we were at Walmart and she explained to me that they were threatening her with jail time if she did not hand over that 27k in cash she pulled all her savings and she had a broken leg I said I’m not letting u get scammed there is a police station up the road and I’ll take u there so that’s what I did and cop could not believe it when he asked her to show him the cash cop explained to her that they don’t take people to jail she called me next day and thanked me again

These scams have been going on for so long I am surprized that people still fall for them.

Pretty much the only people that do are people who are mentally handicapped or so old they can't discern from real or fake calls. That's why I have no issue with handing out extreme punishments for scammers since their work is entirely built on taking advantage of the vulnerable and the poor

People with dementia are not able to learn. The scammers know exactly how to push the right buttons to get the money.

She needs to get ahold of her bank and make sure she uninstalls any programs they put on her phone or computer. I hope she got the help she needed beyond this. Great job!

Scammers are quickly becoming one of the biggest dangers to average folks. Identity theft, skimming, outright scams and deceptions, etc. Sadly it recieves far less resources than it should.

In Canada, when I had a scammer call, I baffled him with BS to the point he hung up. So I kept calling him back until he told me not to call back anymore and promised to take me off the list. That was in 2017. Never had a call again. He did not know that I was a tax specialist. Too funny! There should be a "Beware" program offered to seniors to make them aware.

The fact that nothing ever gets done to the people that make these calls is sickening.
I can only assume that they are from out of country and that the officials in their country won’t do anything to prevent this (or the officials get a cut) ?
I get 1-2 calls daily, mix of texts about ‘my undelivered packages’ or ‘to reset my pin because of unusual activity’, or calls from some extremely angry Chinese lady (which is really a waste since I don’t understand Chinese so couldn’t fall into the scam).
But it’s really just a fricken nuisance!

There are a lot of such things originating from India. There are lots of thugs being taught English "with the right accent" to work in such call centres. They make a vulgar amount of money too every single day!

Up until recently I'd always had the false assumption that people cannot be extradited to the USA for crimes like this...but sure enough it's happened already(Nigerians...not sure if country matters).
They need to do it more... it'll get the scammers to think twice hopefully.
