GREAT informative video. I found this VERY helpful. Me and the fam (wife and 3 kids) are moving to PR in a few weeks. Definitely need a 3 row SUV. William Sims Thanks for watching. I’m glad it helped. For some reasonAWD is hard to come by here on the states. I just recently tried to trade in my Rogue that I brought from the states for a 3 row SUV. Couldn’t find one that had all wheel drive. And the few that did were way higher in price than I wanted to spend. Just make sure you check about the taxes. I have a link in the description where you can put the car info and /or VIN# to get tax numbers.
May I ask how did they come out with the values for the cars? Purchased a used car here and 2.5 years in I’m considering importing. Realized fast the used cars here are often rebuilt imported cars. You did it correct by bringing the cars, now I’m trying to understand how I can make it make financial sense to bring the car I have back in Annapolis. For example, it seem arbitrary and a percentage of what they’re actually charge. Your videos taught me a lot, if your ever want to check out Palmas Del Mar let me know!
Just checked my 2017 BMW X4 will cost just in taxes 12k 😱 not including any other fees…thanks for the sites , think I’ll sell here and buy used on the island
Hi I’m moving back to PR next summer and I’m trying to get the must information I can. Thanks for this video. How was the process to register a financial vehicle in Puerto Rico
Thanks for the heads up because I payed with my credit card on last Tuesday and still has not cleared I have called and no one picks up the phone next car I will pay with a check
Thank You for this video. It was very helpful with important info and it opened my mind to this topic. I am contemplating moving to PR and having an RV Van. Did a quick math and it could cost me around $17K to buy and ship an RV to PR. I could go both ways. Ship to PR or buy in PR for around the same price $17K
I see you said the taxes for the Nissan was 4500 so what was the value of the car, I have a 2016 mustang valued at 19,200 over there so I was wondering around how much my taxes would be
We moved from maryland to PR also..until the hurricanes. We shipped our car. Getting your car there is easy. If you decide to leave..theyve created a rediculous process of red tape & fees. They make getting your car out ALMOST impossible. Good luck
@@ChasingCoquis Yeah man..i5 wasnt easy at all..so difficult that we considered just leaving our 2 vehicles there..which im sure is what the PR gov wants..keep em in the local economy. We moved to georgia after the 2 storms & 5 months without electricity..bought a house here..moved in..got hurricaned again.. Take care & stay safe. PS..it is an awesome place though. Great generous ppl..beautiful beaches & mountains everywhere delicious food. Enjoy bro
Typically new cars here cost between $5-10k more than in the US. Depends on type of car you're buying of course. An example on an extra $5k would be a basic Toyota. So I think you your choice was still much cheaper.
10k!! Wow! We've been looking at moving to PR for sometime and whether or not to bring our cars.. 2013 Ram and 2019 civic. I can only imagine what they'd try to hit me with for the ram. I can't handle another Pennsylvania winter, it's too brutal. I grew up in Aguadilla and have been trying to move back for 30 years... and just when I thought we were close a pandemic hits! Digging the videos.. are you guys affected by the drought? PR can't catch a break.
You will pay more for the civic because its almost new. Im thinking about re moving back to cabo rojo. But hacienda will charge me arond 10K for a tacoma and a Si
For us the pandemic actually moved things along faster. Luckily we were not affected by the drought and as of now the reservoirs here are back to normal levels.
Just found out how much it'll cost me.. door to port. About 1,000 per vehicle. Then the tax comes!! $4,900 for a 2019 honda civic and $2,900 for a 2013 Ram 1500. DAMN! Is there no door to door shippers or no matter what you have to pick up at San Juan port? I know you can get door to door for furniture and other stuff.. just seems odd they won't/can't offer vehicle door to door.. regardless, probably gonna have to sell them bad boys.
Chad Crane I have not heard of any Door to Door services. Yea the taxes are a killer. But just make sure before you sell, you look at the cost of a car you would be here on the island. Remember cars cost more here. Have to do the math and see what makes sense for you. Let me know if you have any other questions, glad to help.
Great video, thanks for the info. I’m currently in the process of shipping 2 cars (2019 GLI and 2016 Outlander). Hacienda calculator doesn’t have the GLI 35th on their records so I’m not able to see how much taxes will I have to pay. Would you say that cars value in PR is 10k more than mainland? What do they take into consideration when valuing a car? Was your car tax approximation the same, less or more than the website calculator showed. I’m trying to figure out a “close” number on how much I’d have to pay. It’s a lot of money to be honest, but I really want to move back.
Hola!! Thanks for watching!! I had the same issue with my 2019 Nissan Rogue that you are having with your GLI. 10k is a good ball park estimate of what you will pay more here for cars. The hacienda comes up with there own evaluation for the cars. I am not sure how they do it. But it is very inflated. The amount that the hacienda website showed for my Chrysler 300 was almost exact to what I paid when I got to the island. As for my rogue. Since I was having the same issue you are having. I went online and found a 2018 rogue with similar features and used the VIN from that car to input into Hacienda calculator in order to get an idea of what my car would cost Just do the math about how much is the total cost to ship the cars versus selling and buying new cars. I just posted another video about registering the cars there as well. Let me know if I can help in any way
@@ChasingCoquis Question: Did you have problems with any of the Lien Holders? So for me, VW Credit said NO, even tho my account is in good standing they don't allow shipping cars overseas. Any tips?
Joel Vega we had one vehicle with capital one and one vehicle with navy fcu. Navy fcu gave us no hassle. However capital one take forever to get the paperwork. If VW doesn’t allow it. I can say either sell it or refinance with a bank that will allow you to send it. Sometimes just getting in tough with a different customer service rep might be able to assist you better
I am employed as a Senior Financial Analyst at a large company in Miami, FL. I get paid for managing my employer’s finances. We are retiring to Puerto Rico, and shipping items from Miami to Puerto Rico. It makes no sense to ship vehicles from the States to Puerto Rico. Here is why. Car dealerships in the States and Puerto Rico pay the same amount for vehicles. Car dealerships in PR add on the cost of shipping the vehicle to PR. If you ship a vehicle to PR, you are paying the cost of shipping the vehicle. In my experience that’s a wash. What you pay to ship the vehicle is the same as the dealerships add on for shipping the vehicle to PR. But you paid sales tax on your vehicle when you purchased it in the States. And when your vehicle arrives in PR it will be taxed at 11% of its retail value. So, let’s make this assumption: You just purchased a new vehicle in the States. The cost of shipping the vehicle to PR is the same as the dealerships add on for shipping the vehicle to PR. You just paid sales tax on the vehicle in the State, and you will be paying another 11% sales tax in PR. Shipping a vehicle to PR makes no financial sense. This guy made a big mistake shipping vehicle to PR. If you are considering moving to PR and shipping vehicles to PR. I hope that you won’t make the same mistake.
@@russellgilbert2297 hola! Thanks for watching. Everyone’s financial situation is different. It really depends on the value of the vehicles, amount owed on the loan (if any) and the out of pocket cost of shipping and taxes. We did the math and compared the overall cost of selling the vehicles we own and buying new versus shipping. For us it made sense to ship. But that is not the case for everyone. Anyone thinking about shipping a car to the island needs to do the math and make sure it’s a wise choice to do so. Good luck with your move and congratulations on your upcoming retirement!
George Velez Hola !! Thanks for watching. If you check the description of this video at the bottom is the link for Hacienda. It will allow you to enter the VIN for your truck and get an estimate on the tax liability. My estimate was almost exact to what i actually paid.
Depends on the price difference and what’s going on in your life at the time of shipping. For us it made sense financially and timing wise to go through Jacksonville. At the time we were also considering Philadelphia as an option as well.
Hell no not many people understand how hard it is to sell a brand new car with out taking a major loss, then to buy a new car hell no ,good move im just nervous to do it with my cars because of other issues
I am so thankful that this video was helpful to you! The reality is cars are expensive everywhere. I understand that my situation can be different than others. If you are contemplating on sending your car to the island and are trying to get a more realistic sense on the cost. The Hacienda has a website where you can input your Vin # and get an estimate on the taxes that you would need to pay. The link is in the Bio for this video at the bottom. If you have any questions about moving to the island let me know and we will do our best to help you. Thanks for watching.
@@ChasingCoquis absolutely thanks so much for the help i will be checking the site now just to get an approximate cost of taxes ,thanks again i will be looking foward to more vids as there are many other channels but myself and wife have been looking for a family /couple that seem similar to us as a middle class hard wrking family ,thanks again.
Thanks for details of your experience. May I ask if the check you used to pay the import tax on the second car was from a mainland bank or a Puerto Rican bank?
Thanks for all the info you are helping a lot of people !. So …. My question , do I have to pay that amount of taxes if I buy a used vehicle in PR too ??
It's crazy to me that you pay tax again for the same vehicle. I would have transferred the vehicle as a visitor or some other loophole. My neighbor was thinking of buying a car here and shipping it so she would have something to drive there transferred renting a car. I am a dealer here. I do have access to Manheim in Puerto Rico. It may be more cost effective to purchase one there through the auction.
Thanks for watching. In certain circumstances you are right it might have been cheaper. But in my case since these were financed vehicles. If I was to sell them, and even if I was to break even, To buy 2 reliable cars here in Puerto Rico I still would have spent about the same amount of money or more.
Thank you so much for this much needed information. I applaud you and your family for taking this incredible step. I am in the beginning steps of thinking about relocating to Puerto Rico for retirement and came across your channel. I have a question about Unlimited Services, at what point did they become involve in the shipping process? My understanding is that you used Coastal Shipping-is that correct? Please advise at your earliest convenience, as I am going to need the full service assistance at the Port.
Hola! So we shipped two cars down to Puerto Rico back to back. The first one coastal auto shipping (who has contracts with Crowley) did the shipping. When the first car arrived that when unlimited services came into the picture. The office is in the parking lot at the Crowley pick up area. They completed the entire pick up process form payment of the taxes to all the documentation to actually getting the car. Once you have your shipping arrangement setup. I would go ahead and contact them to start the process of having them take care of picking up your car.
To ship my first car from US (Jacksonville port to San Juan) we used Coastal Auto Shipping. They are a third party contractor for Crowley. $1000 from port to port is about the regular price to the shipping. We are in the process of doing another shipment of a car and the price is almost the same. Let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for watching !!
I was going to import a car for 6k plus the value of the car. I realized it made no sense and bought a decent 2011 Mercedes E convertible in Caguas for $20k all said and done
I left PR a long time ago therefore I’m not a resident but I want to ship a vehicle do I have to have a local ID to be able to do registration and plates? I have information on the taxes I have to pay through the website. I’m more concern of being able to do paperwork without having a local ID
Stay tuned. We are actually in the process of doing exactly this for some family of ours. Once complete we will be uploading the video with our experience.
Question how about if I got the car honda civic 07 as a gift as it says on the title, how much you think it would be and how long it took to get to puerto rico from Jacksonville
The car took about a week to get to Puerto Rico and through the port. I would check with Hacienda about how much you would need to pay. I don’t think the fact you received the car as a gift is going to effect the tax amount.
Tanner Eskew Hola!! Thanks for watching. We have never done something like that ourselves. But a friend of ours did. They used a company called USHIP. Sent a container from the states to here.
How can i find out how much my tax will be? That link won't work in the description, I wanted to bring a 2011 Mercedes that's worth $7k on the mainland. Shipping doesn't look that crazy expensive but that tax situation looks scary. Roughly how long did it take?
Hi my name is alex i am currently financing a 22camry trd and i plan on going bck to my island next yr, once i refinance the vehicle to take it what do i need to do? I am with Toyota Financial Services right now. The hacienda taxes that you said do you have that at the spot?
Do you know if the car needs to be registered and insured to ship it to PR? I bought a car from an auction and want to ship it so I have a car out there
I recommend looking at third party sites like Expedia and Priceline for pricing. But book directly through the rental company. When the rental car companies are short inventory they cancel reservations from third party websites first.
Thank you so much. One of the things that sucks about moving to PR is that information is scarce. My question for you is, is it ultimately better to just go to Hacienda and pay them in person or would you still go through SURI?
Alejandro Bendana Hola! Thanks for watching. We haven’t had the need to go to hacienda for anything else. If you are going to buy a company to complete the process for you (like we did) its obvious to just let them handle it. But if you are planning on doing everything yourself, I have to assume that it will be better to go hacienda directly in order to make sure things get done right.
Hey thanks for sharing! I got a quote from Crowley and they quoted a little over 1300 for a smaller car. Did you end up paying less than you were quoted?
Mike Allaway Hola!! Thanks for watching. Crowley was about $1500 per car when i got my quotes. They are usually a bit more expensive because they are including a mandatory insurance policy. But you can find third party companies that have contracts with Crowley and it should be cheaper. The only one I have experience with from the mainland is Coastal Auto Shipping. We shipped a car with them for about $950. Insurance was optional since my mainland insurance policy covered my car while it was being transported. This was a different transaction than the ones discussed in this video. The link for this company is below. My experience with them was great. Don’t forget to check out your tax liability. The website link is at the bottom of the description for this video. Let us know if we can help further. Good Luck! coastalautoshipping.com
@@ChasingCoquis Gracias por la ayuda y todo hermano! I spoke to Costal and the quote was much lower. Thanks again for the detailed video, it has helped a lot!
Hola. We did get PR plates. But it took a few weeks since everything at that time was closed. Now everything is open, so you should be able to get everything taken care of sooner. In regards to renewing your plates, I would say if they are still going to be valid for sometime after you arrive on the island then dont need to renew them, save the money. As far as getting the car shipped, one option is to drive it yourself to Jacksonville and drop off at the port, or do a door to port pickup where your shipping company will pick the car up from your house and ship it for you. For us once the cars arrived, It was much easier for us to use and expediter to pay the taxes, complete title change and get plates. We used unlimited services. Their office is right at the port.
Thanks for this informative video. I didn't get what exactly did Unlimited Services for you. Can you please tell me?
Great video; thank you for taking the time to make it.
Thanks for watching!! Let us know if you have any questions
@@ChasingCoquis aloha, you did good on video. What is an old tacoma ova there? Like 2005-2010 ish?
Not tax, one in the paper or side of rd?

Just checked my 2017 BMW X4 will cost just in taxes 12k 😱 not including any other fees…thanks for the sites , think I’ll sell here and buy used on the island
Hi I’m moving back to PR next summer and I’m trying to get the must information I can. Thanks for this video. How was the process to register a financial vehicle in Puerto Rico
This is so helpful! Thank you. We will have our Jeep paid off this year and we are still on the fence to sell or ship.
Thank you for watching. We hope this helps.
Good job, thanks for all that info. Waiting for the next video. I'd like to know about registration , marbete, insurance, etc... Thanks!
Thank you for watching. That video will be coming out hopefully this weekend. I will send you the link once I have posted it.
@@ChasingCoquis Awesome, thanks!
I needed this.. Thank you!!!
Hola!! You are very welcome. Glad this information helped.
Thanks for the heads up because I payed with my credit card on last Tuesday and still has not cleared I have called and no one picks up the phone next car I will pay with a check
What insurance company did you use to ship out the cars. That’s if you need one ofc. I’m having issues trying to find one.
It’s all about value. Everyone’s situation is different. We hope this video helped. Thanks for watching !!
I see you said the taxes for the Nissan was 4500 so what was the value of the car, I have a 2016 mustang valued at 19,200 over there so I was wondering around how much my taxes would be
Bro,great info video thank you sir.
Thanks for watching!! Let us know if you have any other questions.
solid video bro
We moved from maryland to PR also..until the hurricanes. We shipped our car. Getting your car there is easy. If you decide to leave..theyve created a rediculous process of red tape & fees. They make getting your car out ALMOST impossible. Good luck
J Brock Thank you! Unfortunately the systems in PR for many things are flawed, I’m sure the exporting car process isn’t easy either. 🤦🏽♀️
@@ChasingCoquis Yeah man..i5 wasnt easy at all..so difficult that we considered just leaving our 2 vehicles there..which im sure is what the PR gov wants..keep em in the local economy. My wife is from vieques..we lived in PR for 8 yrs..its harder living for sure.
Thanks for the video!!!!!!
Do they inspect and search the vehicles for illigal items ?
Thanks for the video, great info 👍
Hey buddy “
Great video’ just wanted to know what you think of Puerto Rico Car Transport/?
I personally don’t have experience with them. But I have heard good things about them.
Great Video and info. I’m going to need to find out more info about a RHD Suzuki Samurai.
Ten Fe hello. Thanks for watching. Wish you the best. The Samurai here is a very popular vehicle.
I've used "ROSA DEL MONTE" several times and they NEVER DISSAPPOINTED ME.
Great video thank you!!!!
Thank you for watching !!!
I went online and found a 2018 rogue with similar features and used the VIN from that car to input into Hacienda calculator in order to get an idea of what my car would cost
Just do the math about how much is the total cost to ship the cars versus selling and buying new cars.
So, let’s make this assumption:
You just purchased a new vehicle in the States.
Awesome info bro im thinking of shipping my truck from ny its old 2007 but i hope they dont value it like if its new.
George Velez Hola !! Thanks for watching. If you check the description of this video at the bottom is the link for Hacienda. It will allow you to enter the VIN for your truck and get an estimate on the tax liability. My estimate was almost exact to what i actually paid.
Good afternoon Sir i wonder what is more better send car thru TX port or Jax,FL port from NV ?
Depends on the price difference and what’s going on in your life at the time of shipping. For us it made sense financially and timing wise to go through Jacksonville. At the time we were also considering Philadelphia as an option as well.
Great info thanks
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for this info!
Hola!! Your a very welcome. Please let us know if you have any questions. Happy to help.
What company did you use to ship from FL to PR ?
Julito II we haven’t found many other “middle classers”. Hopefully you all can make the move happen!
Alot of $ brother. But i understand you. Thanks for sharing your stories
I'm interested in shipping a small car from Morristown TN to Philadelphia PA & then to San Juan PR. Any suggestions!?
Thanks for the info bro .
I would love to know what company you used because $1000 a good price I’m ready to ship my car right now.
Do you have any information on shipping a fully loaded 40 foot container?
Do i have to have already the new plates from PR and also The PR Driver License to be able to Pickup my car at the port ?
No, you have up to 30 days to switch your car tag once it arrives at the port. You can drive with your license.
Do you know if the car needs to be registered and insured to ship it to PR? I bought a car from an auction and want to ship it so I have a car out there
The phone number for Unlimited Services is invalid.
great info
Hello! By any chance do you know where I can rent a cheap car in Puerto Rico for 5 days?
Do you know how accurate the estimate is they give you on the website ??
Thank you for watching. For us the tax estimate was almost exact. I think only off a few dollars.
hey did you have to pay the taxes all in one go , or is there a payment option? thank you in advance
Thanks for watching! We had to pay all at once. There is no payment plan option.
Is there any other port besides Jacksonville to PR?
Miami
Thank you!
So what form of payment would be the BEST when paying for the excise tax? (Obviously not credit card)
Hola! Using your banks account number and routing number. That was the fastest way for me once the issue was resolved.
I spent around $200 food gas & all driving from New jersey to florida Amtrak too expensive
Hola. I agree if you could drive down it is much cheaper. For us at the time it just wasn’t an option.
Good Luck!

Hola! I plan on moving in about a month. My car will be coming from Nebraska... I haven’t renewed my plates. Do I need to? Do you have PR plates?
And amtrak isn’t for Nebraska area. Any other suggestions?
