In a normal scenario, I hate her interview style, constant pushing, but you can see the joy in her eyes interviewing him, you can see how excited she is.
yes indeed... the company and environment suits the approach, they are both having a good time interacting. this is so much different than what we see most of the times on US tv/interviews, a departure from ultra scripted conversations -even when there's no script if that makes sense :). this feels like the opposite of artificial...
This is one of the best interviews of an artist describing what is being done and the limitations that come along with time. Hugh Laurie is very patient with the lady who is interviewing him and remains thoughtful throughout.
I like it. It feels like it could go wrong, but he seems to do what’s she trying to get him to do. Which is getting into his perceptions of these greater contexts that we see as people watching. This wouldn’t work if they weren’t both participating. If they both weren’t British either. As an American who appreciates dialogue, it’s actually pretty nice. British can talk. I think they can dance around a conversation in a way few Americans could match.
The interviewer has done a lot of research. I notice that most of her questions are closed-requiring yes or no answers. This makes it challenging for the guest to respond. Hugh Laurie does a great job at unwinding an answer.
"Hugh Laurie listens to his interviewer talk about Hugh Laurie and her assumptions about him, at occasion being rudely interrupted by Hugh Laurie amidst her incoherent ramblings about Hugh Laurie." A more appropriate title for this video
Very well said! As wonderful as it is to hear interruped snippets of Hugh Laurie speaking, it would've been far better to actually hear him develop his thoughts. Instead we get to hear the interviewer pontificating and making idiotic assumptions.
Dear Hugh luck has nothing to do with it, your ability and intuition has opened doors and placed you in your position of a highly skilled artist. To put it subtly, you're just the best. All the best from the Antipodes.
What little you know, it may be in some sort o extended cut but Hugh Laurie's desire and passion is jazz, which was very nicely placed in the TV show House. Acting and comedy is something he is simply good at. One person, along with Stephen Fry who I genuinely would like to know. Laurie being the closest being a neighbor for a few years...when he was filming House so was rarely there haha...sad face
She seems to think she is talking to a mortal. Hugh is a rare creature whom should just be let lose. This woman is trying to share his moment. Shut up.
I never believed I'd see an interview where Mariella Frostrup was so starstruck that she made such a pigs ear of it. It's dire. You can see Hugh turn off and go on to autopilot after 2 minutes. Give it to Parkinson. Soupy twist!
I gotta say having been born baptized and raised in Presbyterian household ( in America) I can definitely relate to everything he has said regarding our mutual religious upbringing. To bad the church at least in this country has lost its way in the past few decades.
the church has always been a bit* sideways... a few decades ago they were holding meetings and radio shows counting how many god has punished in the last week thru AIDS, just as an example... *a lot actually. i'm not saying everyone's mental, but the loonies always manage to get a hold of the whole assembly even if just temporarily. you know what i mean? we don't have doctors 'overrun' by psychos or firemen lead by arsonists, teachers under the leadership of child predators, etc. but we kind of see that happening w/ the church at regular intervals unfortunately.
But it was, House is very well written. At least I find it funny, every episode, at least somewhere they sneak in a joke. It has its drama bits for the sake of a soap, but come on, Laurie is a genius of comedy, he just gets on screen and you will definitely laugh in the next hour.
Surprised to learn that Hugh did Archaeology and Anthropology at Cambridge. It was well known to be the subject for guys who went to Cambridge as sportsmen and 'organ scholars' and who lacked the intellectual capacity to do 'proper' degrees. That's not how I see Hugh at all - as this interview makes clear.
Universal to all English speaking countries: I’m going to excel in my craft in my home country and then go to America. (Naturally, this doesn’t apply to Americans by reason of location.)

Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry in Blackadder are comedy gold meant to be!
This is one of the best interviews of an artist describing what is being done and the limitations that come along with time. Hugh Laurie is very patient with the lady who is interviewing him and remains thoughtful throughout.
I started watching this and was inspired to comment; asking the interviewer to shut up and let Laurie talk. But many commenters beat me to it.
My thoughts entirely!!!
@@tineditmarunnerup9513 Hugh didn't mind
Yes, same thing for me - she talked too much. We all wanted to hear more of Hugh Laurie.
Good lord, why does she keep interrupting him so frequently?
Agree.. such an insecure person.
He rambles a bit.
She seems to want to upstage him. Somebody needs to tell her that we are here for him…not her.

I thought she was excellent. Conversations need to feel organic

Good one. I was going to make a similar comment, but you beat me to it and I don't think mine would have been as facetious and risible.
@@thormusique It's what happens, usually, when interviewers try to steer an interview along their agenda.

Mariella Frostbite's ever so good. shame we don't see her much anymore.
she got frostbite unfortunately

3:10 there's also ROE as in cod roe.
Brilliant.Humble.
Is it me or is this interviewer inept? Trying to show how clever you are while doing an interview detracts . Laurie was very gracious
She seems to think she is talking to a mortal. Hugh is a rare creature whom should just be let lose. This woman is trying to share his moment. Shut up.
English Hugh Laurie speaking in an American accent on British television in Scotland. I think this gets the transatlantic totally covered.
I never believed I'd see an interview where Mariella Frostrup was so starstruck that she made such a pigs ear of it. It's dire. You can see Hugh turn off and go on to autopilot after 2 minutes. Give it to Parkinson. Soupy twist!
Why do interviewers think we want to hear them speak? She’s painful.
Is she directing High Laurie?
Im one minute in to it and she cuts him off mid answer to slice another tripped over question in has infuriated me

Whats that....dry wit?
You think a country in which all pleasure and enjoyment is relentlessly repressed would be good?

i wish House had been a comedy. Hugh was hilarious with fry in the 90s.

She’s interviewing herself
Can we hear Hugh talk. She wont let the guest talk
MF prefers the sound of her own voice to Hugh's or any other interviewee.
She's in love with herself; the ideal charistic for an interviewer.

Boy is she annoying... let him talk without interrupting and scooting on to the next topic on her chest sheet
Pity the interviewer isn't that good. Too present. Too eager to say funny stuff. Interrupts Hugh Laurie as he's about to say something great.
1980s comedy had to emulate Monty Python but we still find the original best. Mel Smith was good too

This interviewer talks too much.
Why can't she ask the question and then shut up!
She is a very bad interviewer. And she should smoke less.
Bit late now. In her day Mariella was the go-to well-spoken posh party animal. Think the vocal damage has been done.
Reporter please stop talking
You're not lucky Hugh your talented with a side of luck!
The interviewer does a great job here playfully cajoling him along. It's more of a conversation it's great viewing.
Oh haha, it seems you're quite on your own there, everyone else hates her for this style.
Not an interviewer. A tedious, longwinded interrupter - interviewing only herself.
You still fancy her though.......
The interviewer is quite annoying
