I'm an Elvis Costello diehard fan. I think he's one of the greatest writers in music. He started putting music out in the late 70's and still puts out music today. There are so many great songs but if you could listen to Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter from the Look Now CD (2018), God Give Me Strength from Painted From Memory (1998 With Burt Bacharach). He's collaborated with Paul McCarntney. The man is a wordsmith and a musical genius. People either love him or they hate him.

How fun! I have not heard that song in years. Elvis Costello and other groups like him were part of we called the New Wave music. It was really unique and only lasted for a few years late 70's to early 80's then the sounds were kind of incorporated into mainstream music of the 80's. This music really popular when I was in high school. Disco was on its way out and people were looking for something new. Punk rock was also big at the time. Punk rock was very and aggressive and in your face, where as New Wave had some of the same vibe, but was not as hard edged. It was really big in LA where I was growing up. Other New Wave groups were Devo, and B52's. They also had a unique style with the tight, British cuts suits and narrow ties. It was sure a fun time for music so much variety.

Declan Patrick Macmanus. From his first album, my aim is true, till the middle 80's, him and the clash were my main players. Elvis would come out with an album about every 6 months and they were all fantastic. Intense and full of anger, hatred, and sexual frustration. The music was pure energy. Hardly ever would a song last more than 3 minutes. It was so layered and he seemed to mix several melodies into the same song. It was insane. And the bizarre thing was, even though he was one of my favs from this time, I would hate every new album when it first came out. I had to play it several times before it won me over. Just so intense and powerful. Great great stuff.

Ahhh Elvis Costello. Another rabbit hole worth exploring. Very original British rocker whose heyday was the late 1970s through the 1980s, though he is still making music today. Some great EC songs to explore:
    Alison
    Accidents Will Happen
    Oliver's Army
(What's So Funny ;bout) Peace Love and Understanding
    Radio Radio.
He did a recording with the Brodsky Quartet that was unusual but cool in (I believe) the early 1990s which featured the great song:
    Jackson's Monk and Rowe

Real name Declan McManus, got signed after playing outside a music-biz convention or something. They hijacked Huey Lewis' band the Clovers, who'd all gone to England with high hopes, to play on Elvis' first album 'My Aim is True'. Huey schlepped back stateside, almost crushed, put the News together, ended up ok.
Elvis assembled one the rockingest bands ever, the Attractions, and followed up with 'This Year's Model', then record after record of exquisite songcraft.
More? 'Accidents Will Happen', 'Radio Radio', 'Alison', 'Oliver's Army', 'What's So Funny About....', 'Watching the Detectives', 'I Wanna Be Loved' (watch the video -awww - lol), 'Mystery Dance'-banger.
About a decade ago he had a show called 'Spectacle' co-produced by Sir Elton's hubby, David Furnish, and Elton was the first guest. An hour of musical lore and riches, like his(Elton's) debt to Nina Simone and Long John Baldry, who also mentored Rod Stewart. See LJB's 'Don't Try to Lay No Boogie-Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll' and 'A Thrill's A Thrill'. You're welcome. Mos def unwrap that one.
A buddy's mum/mom saw the cover of 'My aim...' back in the day and reacted, "oh, that poor boy". She saw his stance and thought he had polio or something. Mums...pure heart. D
When this came out I was in Vancouver hanging with early punks and new wavers like DOA, the Young Canadians, Pointed Sticks, and well, you gotta check out Art Bergmann: 'Empty House', 'The Final Cliche', 'Bound for Vegas', 'Our Little Secret', and just for you, 'Hawaii'.

If you're a lyrics-conscious person you can't fail to become a fan of Elvis Costello. But - I also think of him as one of the last capital-S Songwriters, people whose music really is reducible to the very basics of notes words and chords. Some people carry on about his punk-ish/pub-rock-ish stuff from 1976-78, but to really get what he's about, musically speaking, you have to immerse yourself in albums like Imperial Bedroom, Mighty Like A Rose and National Ransom. (Not forgetting King of America, The Juliet Letters and All This Useless Beauty,...and many more).
Oh, and before anyone else mentions it, "everyone knows that drunk talk that doesn't mean anything...that kind of talk is meant to stay in the bar, it's not meant to be reported to the newspapers"

I don’t know why the difference, but in England, pissed = drunk; in America, pissed = angry.

By the way- this song is 44 years old. From 1978. One of his songs that is so appropriate for the time is What’s so Funny Bout Peace Love and Understanding.

Hi Shawn and Mel. As you liked this you need to hear Watching the detectives. From the same era The Undertones - Teenage Kicks. Ian Dury & the Blockheads - Reasons to be cheerful part 3 . Another rabbit hole.

Listen to this 2004 performance of Pump It Up, from “Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Live in Memphis.” The energy is definitely pumped up and their commitment to the delivering to this small, up close crowd, takes it up even a few notches. This is one of the finest live documents of my all-time favorite musical artist and his great band.

Elvis Costello is great! If you want to try a jazz reaction I suggest his wife Diana Krall's music...they're a super talented pair :)
