Lex giggling and smiling when she likes a song , is the greatest thing.
Wish you could bottle that energy and good vibe :)
Yeah, her personality kind of reminds me of Luanne from King of the Hill lol
Brad actually smiled to.
love you guys it's a pleaure
Lexi is a born rocker...her reactions are unrestrained, pure enthusiasm.
Elvis Costello is one of the greatest lyricists of all time, full of double entendres, insight and venom. The guy takes no prisoners. There is definitely a punk influence in his early work, but later he branches off into all kinds of genres ... psychedelic, acid, jazz, country. But he certainly still knows how to ROCK. The man is just a sensational talent.
You can read wikipedia congratulations
Graham Maby on bass
@@oreally8605 no, Graham Maby played with Joe Jackson, this was Bruce Thomas on bass
I think he used 'Punk' as a way of getting noticed and once he realized they were going to make it he quickly discarded the whole Punk thing. Their first 3 albums indicated how versatile they were and Punk was way below them.
@@xaspirate8060- Except for The Clash! They started out full-on punk, but by the time of London Calling (masterpiece!) and Combat Rock, they pretty much played whatever genre they wanted. I do *adore* Elvis and the Attractions. So versatile! Sorry about the tangent!
Lex was right in saying that this song is "slightly punk". Elvis Costello and his band came to prominence in the UK just as punk was commercialising into "New Wave", and he was part of that scene. Costello is a great songwriter and a clever lyricist. I recommend "Oliver's army", "Watching the detectives" and "Alison" if you want to react to more of his songs.
I would throw in there "Deep Dark Truthful Mirror" (showcase for his voice and also great piano by Allen Toussaint), "Veronica," "So Like Candy," "Pads, Paws & Claws," and "Other Side of Summer" for a different sort of vibe,
"Watching the detectives" is superb! For about 20 years all I had was a mono tape recording and got used to how it sounded, thinking the distorted drums were down to my recording. I now know that's how they really sound! The live versions are more spirited but nowhere near as spooky.
Pretty much can't go wrong with Elvis Costello. He goes into so many different vibes over the years, and it's just him being himself. Absolutely my songwriting Hero.
Yeah, there are so many great Elvis Costello songs they could spend weeks reacting to them all. Brad would probably like Alison.
New Amsterdam
This is my Elvis. There is no other Elvis for me.
Lex is right, he's a bit punk, but is really a unique entity. He would have been considered post punk or new wave for most of his career; but always had that anti-authority, rebellious thing going. One of my all time favs and was lucky enough to see him in '91 & '02. A great wordsmith and has a knack for writing super catchy hooks. This LP (his second) is one of his best & This Year's Girl is another banger from it ✌
Always loved Lipstick Vogue, too. What an absolute banger.
His later work is a bit different from the 70s and 80s. The Juliet Letters is a good example. He is such a great song writer too. A class act.
Lucky enough to have seen Elvis 4 times. Great stuff. Love him so much
Yeah i guess it's punk/post-punk, or even power-pop, but he sprinkles everything with that old-school greasy haired rock'n'roll too. Rockabilly even.
It’s a rap song!
This man is a genius. So many great tracks, one in particular is "Watching The Detectives". Such a catchy punk Reggae sound.
“It’s a little punk.” 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 No joke, Lex is the most insightful music reactor I’ve seen.
My favorite artist for over 40 years now
"Radio, Radio". "Peace, Love, and Understanding"
Haven't heard this song in years! It's still a total banger.
On my play list, and love it. Oliver's Army, What's So Funny about Peace Love and Understating, Everyday I Write Book, Allison...all good ones. The song has one of my very favorite lyrics..."She's like a chemical, though I try to stop it, she's like a narcotic.
"A little bit punk" -- nailed it. Elvis Costello emerged in the UK while punk was at its peak, and the various streams of "new wave" were just beginning to form. For future Elvis Costello reactions, find videos with the lyrics -- because his songwriting is rich with subtle wordplay.
Applause is right Lex!
Elvis Costello is a modern musical genius. You could mine his stuff for a year and never run out of great, surprising music.
This song sounds like 7:45 pm on a Friday night after working 50 hours of overtime that week. Love it.
i bodyguarded him in my home town liverpool before the first lockdown, really nice fella
Elvis Costello was marketed as "new wave" back in the late seventies, but his songs often evoked the greats from the fifties and sixties. You could spend quite a lot of time digging into the Elvis Costello catalog as follow up to "Pump It Up" -- "Radio Radio", "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes", "Watching the Detectives", "(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea", "Less Than Zero", "Pay It Back", "What's So Funny ('Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding)?", "Accidents Will Happen", "Oliver's Army", "I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down", "Brilliant Mistake", "I Hope You're Happy Now", "I Want You", "Veronica" and so many others.
Good job Mike! You have mentioned the ones that I love the most from EC. Oh hold on -- gotta have "This Years Girl" in there.
Mike nails it...
For "I Want You" a good version to do would be the live version with Fiona Apple. She goes all in. Absolutely devastating.
About damn time they did Elvis Costello! 😆 He was the nerdy version of Iggy Pop, lot of swag and humor. They were definitely punk new wave. Early new wave.
Hell yeah !!!
an anthem about self pleasuring
This song and "Watching the Detectives" was in constant play during my time in Art School (the late 70s).
Watching the Detectives is an amazing song and plenty of lyrics to decipher.
CHOON!
Love Elvis Costello! He is so versatile!
Every highschool party had to have this song! Nobody cared what the lyrics meant; it was just a fun song to dance and sing along. Elivis Costello was at the top of everybody's "favorite bands" list.
Brad & Lex, you'll love his "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding", "Alison"(softer), and "Watching The Detectives" !! He's has some of the best late 70s, early 80s 'new wave' !!
More Elvis Costello, never fails
Elvis Costello is such a cool, down to earth guy. I used to work in a bar/restaurant in Toronto's airport. There was an airport shuttle bus driver that used to come in sometimes for his lunch. He came in on a break and was so excited. He knew I loved music so told me Elvis Costello used the bus to transfer from his flight to the terminal and the driver recognized him, while chatting said he was a fan but most of his albums were destroyed in a fire. Elvis took his name and address. About five weeks later the bus driver came into my work freaking out. Elvis had his inter discography sent to his home with all the albums signed. He even sent as many 45's as were available. Freaking Legend!
See him in concert and your cheek muscles ache from grinning ear to ear. He has a Wheel of Fortune thing at his shows, but instead of money they have all his hit songs. Whatever the wheel stops at is what he plays next. I just love him.
Peace Love and Understanding is also a classic
And not out of fashion, sadly.
Yes, I agree! peace love and understanding is a great song. Actually a cover though. Written by Nick Lowe.
The part that Lexi likes is my fav, too - sounds almost like the music is playing in reverse.
One of my favorite songs just ever
One of my favorite songs from my teenage years in the late 70s, early 80s. Still love Elvis!
LOVE LOVE LOVE Elvis Costello 🥰
Lex, my all time favorite reaction!!! Wow, pure joy and delight at hearing a song for the first time. It was beautiful, thanks for letting me relive what its like to experience hearing a unique classic like this through anothers eyes. Made me smile n made my day.
Elvis Costello is awesome. Besides his own music, he has done so much for up and coming musicians, without much fanfare.
Love this song!
Such a great song. Can't help dancing like him every time it is on. Regardless if it destroys your ankles!
Yes he was going for the Buddy Hollie retro themed punk sound
Been a fan of Costello since the late 70s. Definitely punk vibe, as he came out big during the first wave of British punk. He's definitely an awesome artist.
Oh my God. Lex is right on the money...Again! She hit the nail on the head when she said it sounded a little punk. Elvis was at the start of punk at this point. His music is great. Great song writer, and great performer. Lex, you are batting 1000. And you are so cute when you get all into the music. Love it...and you.
Finally! Some good stuff! And yes, he was at the forefront of Punk!
Elvis Costello is essential listening - great catchy hooks, good beat, totally danceable - with punk + slimmed-down late '50's, early 60's "mod" vibes. Wonderful stuff!
Just watching Lex bopping along to the song with such delight made this one of the most enjoyable reaction videos I've ever watched !!! .. Totally gorgeous .. As for the song, well I absolutely love Elvis Costello's music, and this is just one of his many great ones .. He is a unique artist who deserves a deep dive into his wide repertoire .. Cheers, Wayne
OMFG. I was just listening to EC. Amazing catalogue.
Fashioned his image after Buddy Holly. Dope song. He's married to jazz great, Diana Krall. "Alison" was a huge hit for him.
Very talented and versatile artist. Dig in! Love Lex's enthusiasm.
I loved Elvis Costello and the Attractions in my youth. Huge catalog with a great deal of variation and always interesting lyrics. Loved his breakthrough debut album and with his second album he added his longtime backup band the Attractions and I loved it so much more - they add so many wonderful little touches. One of my favorite albums of theirs is one called "Get Happy" which has 20something popping little ditties. You can find it on UA-cam and if you hit play, I think you won't want to hit stop. Don't worry about not being then able to use such songs for the channel, there is so much else to choose from. He can really belt out a song when he wants to. When I saw them live, he did an acapella encore and it was wonderful. Back in the day he was thought of as kinda punk also, but their skill level was just way above punk bands. He deserves a deep dive.
"Get Happy" is my favorite album by him. Every song is a little gem.
@@rickyconner6782 I went out an grabbed that one as soon as it was released based on ROlling Stone's advert for it = "Writing songs faster than most can listen to them!"
Get Happy is the result of the archaic practice of suits deciding that UK and American versions of the same LP had to have different track listings. That’s the only reason it exists, it’s merely all the extra songs from his British LPs to that point + B sides. Both Rhino and Rykodisc attempted to reconcile the two with their reissues. BUT - I bought it when it came out and absolutely love it! I don’t listen to vinyl - but I’ve got a never opened copy of it in my closet. ☮️
@@unrulysimian3897 No, but that is true of Taking Liberties - which is also quite good so, so what.
@@dano9008 You're absolutely correct!!! My old brain mixed up the two. Here I am pontificating incorrectly. 😎
His dad sang the R Whites lemonade song in the adverts and Elvis did the backing vocals.
I'm a secret lemonade drinker!
Woo! Danced my ass off to this song back in the day. Watching the Detectives, Alison, & The Angels Wanna Wear my Red Shoes also great songs
Great song. Love his work. In high school, I loved the song "Veronica" until I found out what the song was about. Now, I get a little teary eyed when I hear it.
This Elvis is the true King. Definitely has punk, Ska, post punk credentials as part of his resume. He is also a tremendous music producer. Check out "Watching the Detectives" by Costello
Had no idea this was Elvis Costello.
Other great songs of his: I Don't Wanna Go to Chelsea, Radio Radio, What's So Funny Bout Peace Love and Understanding, Less Than Zero, Oliver's Army.
Specifically, there's an iconic performance of his from SNL where they started playing one song - Less Than Zero - then stop and launch into Radio Radio instead.
Speaking of being a punk, that move he made on SNL got him banned. Bet they were sorry they banned him later on. He’s had a monster career. “If It Ain’t Stiff, It Ain’t Worth A F@ck” - Stiff Records
Oh boy I bought this 7 inch single when it came out and still have it to this day. Elvis Costello remains one of my favourites and he has a very eclectic and varied catalogue that spans from 1977 to this day. His latest album (The Boy Named If) is fantastic.
Try any of the following songs....Watching the Detectives, I Don't Want to Go To Chelsea, Accidents Will Happen, High Fidleity, Alison, Radio Radio, Ship Building, Oliver's Army, Veronica (written with Paul McCartney)...there are many more . That said I think his biggest hit was a cover of "She" with Burt Bacharach for the soundtrack of the film Notting Hill.
Elvis is Great!!!!!
Lex's beautiful reactions and insights of EC's punk and likes the 50s & 20s are great. So lovely to see her first-time spirit to music I came to love music through. As others have said, I recommend "Alison" and "Watching the Detectives" and so many of EC's lyrics. Beautiful to see that music still stirring such pure giggles and dance moves.
Can't help bouncing to this one 😃. After all of the songs these two have done now, and it's a lot, it's great to see Lex still discovering new artists that make her do her couch dance!!
Elvis is awesome! Such an amazing performer
One of the best things about this song are the Bass lines laid down by Bruce Thomas. Absolutely killer riffs.
Lex never fails to make me smile.
Great reaction to Elvis Costello! His catalog is immense, and he is deserving of many more reactions! Try "What's so funny about peace, love, and understanding"!
Elvis Costello is a great songwriter. He wrote Girl's Talk for Dave Edmunds. Also Oliver's Army
Brad is f*****d without a lyric video and Lex is like loving the riff and f**k the lyrics!🤣🤣
A great time for British music.
Elvis is BRILLIANT
Lexi was right! Elvis Costello was his stage name and his swagger was punk and 50s combined!
Named himself after Elvis and took his look from Buddy Holly.
His dad was TV wrestler Mick McManus. Infamous in the sixties
@@keithjoyce6798 interesting
Elvis Costello was so important in that transition from post-punk the whatever came next and he had so many great hits on those first few albums. If you find a playlist for his early Greatest Hits, every song on there is amazing. And he's actually a really amazing singer as well when he does more melodic stuff. In later days he collaborated with Burt Bacharach and so forth on Old School melodic stuff. Also, I think what might be triggering the 50s and 60s reference is at farfisa organ on there, that was a Hallmark of a lot of pop songs from back then.
When this song hit the airwaves in '78, there were SO many genres happening or about to happen all at once. Disco (dying but alive), punk, arena rock, prog, new wave, metal...
Insane time for music in the late 70's.
My wife and I have both loved EC for years - but the funniest things was our eldest sons reaction - before he was borne - when every anyone one of his songs would play he would always start dancing and booging inside my wife tummy!
Elvis Costello is definitely one of a kind, I love his music, and he is a great lyricist. I would suggest reacting to Alison, Watching the detectives, every day I write the book, And many others you can definitely dive into a rabbit hole with him
fun fact: for recording this album, Elvis needed a band (that band's singer didn't play on this album, obviously). The one he hired, called Clover, went on to become a band called The News, and the singer that didn't work on the Elvis Costello album? Huey Lewis.
The opening bass line on this song is sooooo good.👍🔥
"Just a little punk". Yep, that's Costello to a "T". He & the Attractions (his band) were very popular with punks in the UK around '78 til '80 ish.
Great song, Elvis Costello rocks. He's got plenty of good songs. Timeless, his songs don't age.
Yeah Brad & Lex. I LOVE this song and I never saw anyone react to it. This is what got me into Elvis. He has a really wide range and a huge catalog.
Thank you.
Check out "She" for a totally different sound from him.
I suggested this song a week or so ago. Its one of my favorite songs--it makes me happy.
"Radio Radio" and "watchin the detectives".....great elvis tunes also
The Attractions -- keyboardist Steve Nieve, drummer Pete Thomas, and bassist Bruce Thomas -- were one of the best backing bands of all time. Their tight chemistry was the perfect rhythmic and melodic foundation for Elvis Costello's genius lyrics.
EC is a great artist and this is almost 45 years old! Post Punk but a big old school R and Roll influence. You can tell his look is dedicated to Buddy Holly. Lots of great stuff that can be VERY different over the years. Even has a country album and another with a string quartet or another with songwriter Burt Bacharach. Still making music. Try out some more old stuff like Watching the Detective or Alison from his first album. Or Two Little Hitlers; If you like EC try Joe Jackson from same period. I'm The Man, Fools in Love, Everything Gives You Cancer.
One of my first serious purchases was King Of America. Back in the day. It lives with me. I can't tell you why I like it.
It's hard to imagine that 45 years have passed by thanks for making me feel OLD 🤪 where am I?
Who are you?
Could someone please turn the gramophone down i can't hear where I am
Not really "post-punk," because it was contemporaneous with punk's impact on culture. But that is just one aspect of his music, as you note so well.
Lex’s makes me feel like I’m discovering these tunes again for the first time! You’re a star Lex 👍🤣
Such a Diverse Artist. Another Who reinvents himself frequently.
Wow, what a groove - perfect!
He had some beautiful ballads too, Alison being one of them. The story of love lost and the two have never been happy since.
Tear jerkers, like Veronica, written about his grandmother who was losing her battle with Alzheimer's. Veronica is an upbeat song, but with mournful lyrics. Another great Ballad is "She." It's a killer.
He's played with Burt Bacharach as well. A couple of songs that they did that really tugged at my heart strings were "I Still Have That Other Girl in my Head," and "God Give Me Strength." Elvis's unique voice really belted these out with so much heart wrenching pain, you can feel it.
Of course there's the other classics like Oliver's Army and Everyday I Write the Book.
Elvis is king. Check out "mystery dance" or "watching the detectives"
OMG, I love how much Lex gets into this. I'm over here just like her 'cuz I loved this song since the first day it came out.
1983 TKO Tour Streatham Ballroom in South London. Put on a great high-energy show. This was the encore. It was great to see a lot of gigs in the golden age of music.
I always play this song when getting ready for a night out. Really pumps me up!
Elvis Costello first album came out in 1977 at the height of punk and this track is from that time so you're spot on Lex.
Since then he's released 26 albums + a further 12 collaborative ones with other artists. As well as his own stuff he's also written and produce numerous hits for other bands/singers.
Over that time he's made songs with a great variety of styles and genres. A few I'd recommend are:
- Oliver's Army.
- This Year's Girl.
- She (which you may recognise).
- I Want You.
The last one? Well I don't want to give you any spoilers but if doesn't provoke a reaction then you're officially dead!🙂
This song has been following me around since i was a kid in the 70s love it
Look at photos of Buddy Holly to see where Elvis gets his inspiration
Loved this song back in the day... a transition from punk rock to new wave rock
When I was a teen there was a restaurant attached to my house. On the wall they had that green and yellow picture of him really big like 5 feet across.
Loved watching such a pure joyous reaction. Something magical about music when it’s so dope you have to laugh out of happiness.
Also fantastic: This Year’s Girl, Oliver’s Army, Green Shirt, I Don’t Want to Go to Chelsea
All the LP is great, one of this albums without a bad song. And the musicians nailed it, especially the bassist!! Amazing!
I love how this lights Lex up with giggles. Brad, Elvis Costello is one of the greatest lyricist of all time. You definitely need to check out the words in his songs. Check out anythingFrom the album blood and chocolate. I mean, any of his stuff is great, but that’s my personal favorite album.
when punk turned into New Wave. I was 16 and loved that song.
This song has the greatest little bass line running all the way through it. As well as all the rest of it.
Been a firm favourite of mine since the day it was released.
The band are absolutely *cooking* on this track! The drummer is taking no prisoners, that bassline is *filthy* and the organ swirls brilliantly.
Hell yeah! I remember coming across this song on a cd rom version of Encarta 95 encyclopedia when i was about 7 or 8 (im now 35). The first song i remember listening to and thinking, "This is what type of music i like"
Love seeing my people exploring different kinds of music. Classic song right there.
Love seein' you smile, Brad!!! And Lex, my dear, ALWAYS a bundle of enthusiasm!!! Great reaction, guys!!! Love you both...
You guys are absolutely right about people back in the late 70s (punks, in particular) having a lot of respect for the whole 50s / 60s aesthetic. They loved the styles and the rebellious side that went along with it. A lot of punks in the UK would emulate this to the extent of wearing drainpipe trousers and drape coats, just like the "teddy boys" or rockers of the 50s.
Part of punk was shaking off the highly produced and progressive rock of the 70s to go back to a basic garage band sound.
u sure bout that? i know they hated prog lol but i know a lot of them didn't like beatles and chuck berry etc. sex pistols and dead kennedys at least. ngl though i know those are the most popular punk bands, im not an expert on the scene.
Yeah, a good example of this is how The Clash based the cover of London Calling off of Elvis Presley from 1956.
@@FirstnameLastname-nd9wx Heh Sex Pistols and DK pretty much hated everybody, though.
@@FirstnameLastname-nd9wx Have you heard Sid Vicious' version of C'mon Everybody and Somethin' Else? Seen Johnny Rotten in his drape coat and creepers? Even The Rezillos pretty much built their entire image and musical style around 50's style extremes and schlock-horror themes. They loved all that stuff, they grew up with it. You are right about the anti-prog / hippy / bland shit that was going around back then, but even Rotten himself admitted one of his fave bands back before punk was kraut-rock band "Can", who were about as prog as you can get.
