  • Anna, her story / produced by Stark-Films.
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Film Collection, item no. 171922.
    Date: 1950.
    Creator: Stark-Films (Firm)
    Extent: 1 film reel (141 ft., 4 min.) : sd., b&w ; 16 mm. print.
Description: This pro-animal research short centers on a dog named Anna that was used in the laboratory research and development of an operation to correct tetralogy of fallot, a congenital heart defect sometimes referred to as "blue baby" syndrome. The film was produced on short notice to be aired on local television prior to the Baltimore Dog Referendum vote on Election Day, November 7, 1950. The proposed referendum, which was defeated by Baltimore voters, would have created a commission to prevent the use of stray dogs in medical research and teaching.
The film points out that dogs were used in the development of the artificial kidney, artificial bladder, and in diabetes research; that in 8 months, 900 dogs from the Baltimore city pound were used in research while in the same period, the pound destroyed more than 8,000 dogs.
Voice-over narration is delivered over footage of newspaper clippings telling of the world-wide sensation the operation created and scenes of two former "blue babies" playing with Anna and feeding her an ice cream cone. The narrator urges the viewer to join with his physician in speaking out for the use of pound dogs in medical research.

Very informative film and it’s still important for the use of animals to be used in medical research today. I wonder how many of those who disagree would be the first to raise their hand and volunteer for research to be done on them? Probably none!

Since it is proved, that animals and humans are not so compatible one cellular level, I would gladly opt for usinge murderers as research animals. Win-win situation

That's funny. You're making exactly that point. Why don't we do those experiments on you instead of in someone else? Someone else should die, not me, I'm special. It's funny you think you're making the opposite argument.
