This is kinda horrific
The surgical procedure for Tetra de Fallot (blue baby surgery) was rightly renamed the Blalock-Thomas-Taussig procedure and the shunt is called the Block-Thomas-Taussig Shunt.
This made such a difference in making the United States' medicine an advanced science. He helped us leap from primitive to front line in record time.
My brother Harold Paul had open heart on at John Hopkins in July 1945 but did not survive the surgery I was born a month later with a heart defect. My mom would tell me about Vivien Thomas and Dr. Blalock. They definitely come a long way since.
I nursed in Australia in the 1970s and things really weren't much different!
This was DuMont, not ABC.
Correct, this originally aired on the Dumont Television Network. The reference to ABC-TV was accidentally copied from another video description and has been removed.
Great videos! #1 spot to increase your channel's engagement 'PromoSM'!!
I found articles from 1902 regarding a Professor Welch of John Hopkins University who confidently announced at a medical congress in london his discovery of a "virus" that promised to cure and prevent every disease known to man by the inoculations with this, said, virus. He was quoted as saying, anyone inoculated "would never catch anything". Can someone explain?
You have to pump
Pump the heart
I'm going to find someone to pump I have to pump the heart
It's very good to come to heart
You have to pump the heart to get it to pump
Three basic questions...Giant of medicine vision

What a joy to hear first hand knowledge of Dr. Vivien Thomas and his great skill.
gosh, seems everyone is now for Thomas and less appreciative of Blalock. I guess that there is that feeling that he was held back by both racism and by poverty from getting his due though he made a tremendous contribution to medicine working with Blalock.
@@rlkinnard He was held back by racism and the Great Depression. A contributor to heart surgery who was hidden in the background of the medical field and lost an opportunity to live his life long dream of becoming a medical doctor. Blalock on the other hand was heralded in his field, toured the world lecturing and teaching, and winning almost every major medical award there was. His accomplishment, though great, would not be a reality without Thomas' experimentation and tool building. There's a reason he had to stand behind Blalock instructing him on almost 200 surgeries.
@@gnewt75 Thomas got to be a member of a team that made a great contribution. And post-humously, he is getting lots of credit and Blalock is paying for his sins.
@@rlkinnard His sin isn't what you're making it out to be. He's a product of his time and ignorance. To herald Thomas doesn't mean Blalock loses anything. The movie shows Thomas was forgotten. As he was. Today he isn't. And should be remembered. Thomas even mentioned that others stole his research and never gave him any academic credit. This isn't a statement about Blalock. It's his statement about another member of this team he was part of.
@@gnewt75 The movie did not make it out that he was forgotten. He gets a lot of credit today to make up for the credit that he was due in 1948.
John Barry’s book “The Great Influenza” brought me here.
Me too! Hehe
Same here.
Very informative film and it’s still important for the use of animals to be used in medical research today. I wonder how many of those who disagree would be the first to raise their hand and volunteer for research to be done on them? Probably none!
PETA is in the way of medical research and the meat industry.
Since it is proved, that animals and humans are not so compatible one cellular level, I would gladly opt for usinge murderers as research animals. Win-win situation
@@kasiafoksinska2143 - Particularly child molesters!!
That's funny. You're making exactly that point. Why don't we do those experiments on you instead of in someone else? Someone else should die, not me, I'm special. It's funny you think you're making the opposite argument.
The element of being a doctor is giving a diagnose for findings to providing treatment. Very interesting, that the course of knowing what is wrong with a patient should be the fundamental element for practicing medicine. Practicing medicine for diagnosing diseases should be free for universal health.
Record of epidemics found in the Bible, the beginning of the time is the origin of disease agents, a disease for epidermic maybe sometimes associate with a sinner in a particular region and can be transported to another region or other country by a traveler.
wish it properly scanned! the blue peeking through is an interesting side effect of the telecine..
Shame on the medical community, only 55 people (Drs) have visited this video. The grate McGehee.
Its a cancer cell i think?
I would have been more proud to have a photo taken with Vivian Thomas instead of a Dog... that goes to show how far race relations where in those days... but then again ive seen people offended by a comment on dog fighting. Violence towards humans is less offensive...

I love these old medical films, very interesting to see how far we've come and what we may still do after so much time
Doctors of tomorrow listen and listen close. Do not become a doctor for the money do not become a doctor for the coat the only reason you've become a doctor is you are inspired by what to cure and answers. Otherwise it is just a job and nobody needs a doctor that has a job. Because a real doctor his job never ends. These young doctors are detached and they're taught that detach. Know if you can't mentally handle it don't f****** do it
Technology might've evolved but stupidity and seeing things at its best is below cavemen days. Doctors can't even think for themselves outside to test. Sad world you guys are going to grow up in

ohhhhh... this is sooo cool!!!!!
What are these dark granules within the fibroblast cytoplasm?
In the description, Warren Lewis (the filmmaker and researcher) only describes them as "dark, fat, globules". I am not a physician or expert on cell culture, but my sense is that it is fluid from the surrounding medium that was ingested in the cell via pinocytosis. This other film by Lewis describes it better: ua-cam.com/video/7qUCTgJ8C8s/v-deo.html
Excellent documentary! Watching this documentary makes you realize how much more we know about medicine compared to 1947! Puffing a cigarette calmly in the hospital in the company of other doctors with no idea of it's side effects!
surprising pixar never touched on this concept.
Great documentary!

James Jude, CPR Hero for Human RIP, Dr.
+7AmProject Dr. Jude lived to see the 50th anniversary of CPR's development. He saved many lives through his work in developing the procedure.
My father, Dr. James R. Jude, was one of the co-developers of CPR. He died today, July 28, 2015. We will miss him but know that he left a legacy that is enabling many people who suffer Sudden Cardiac Arrest to live. May he rest in peace.
+Cecilia Prahl your father saved many lives through his research in developing cardiac massage. His work fifty-five years ago is saving lives today. People who faced certain death got a second chance. The procedure also opened the door for paramedic programs providing advanced emergency care on our streets and in our homes. A 1961 film submitted by Medical Archives, "External Cardiac Massage", shows your father outlining resuscitation steps for doctors. God bless Dr. Jude and God bless you and your family.
+K “kturner” Turner Thank you for your kind remarks about my father! God bless you!
Your father's work and the work of his colleagues will always be a blessing to us all. Their work helped save my life in the past. May your father forever rest in peace in God's kingdom.
Amazing that they're doing real compressions on what is probably a volunteer. Pretty cool too.
If they are done well, there is no danger, real compressions can be done so the procedure looks better.
According to the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation guidelines, CPR involves chest compressions at least 5 cm (2 in) deep and at a rate of at least 100 per minute in an effort to create artificial circulation by manually pumping blood through the heart and thus the body.
This is a very old film, but still very informal.
When was this originally made?
Best guess is 1939-40, when the Lewises published two papers with Drs. Rich and Wintrobe.
can I know the type of the used microscope ?
THIS IS SO COOL!!! I am such a nerd for loving this but... I DON'T CARE! XD
