Thanks so much for this video! I was able to remove the knob fairly easily by using your method, allowing me access to change the light bulb for my gear shift indicator. Thanks again!
Definitely pull and twist if you're having trouble, it wont twist much at all, but enough to flex the plastic inside the knob. Once you have the knob off, you can see on the steel post that there's a lip that locks the knob into place. In order to coax that corresponding plastic lip inside the knob past the steel post lip, you need to twist the knob while pulling like a mtrfkr, being careful not to break ur own jaw in the process. 😄😄
This worked great for me. I think the reverse grip plus the twist givies you more leverage. I tried the straddle and tug method with no success. This worked on the second pull.
@@gotdrift8 there wasn’t any side movement in mine either. Twisting as you pull was the only way mine came off. I guess it depends how many times someone’s taken it off. Maybe it gets easier? 🤷🏼♂️
I got excited when I saw how simple it is to remove the 2 or 4 wheel drive. I have a 1984 J10Jeep Truck. the damn knob is threaded. When I try to unscrew counter clockwise or clock wise. I am attempting to remove the engine and place a new engine in. When I twist the knob counter clockwise all it does is click.
Great video as always CPO. Do you have any videos on removing the whole center console? I have to remove mine and I’ve heard it’s a real pain. Thanks. Keep the videos coming!!
Apparently I'm not strong enough. I've almost pulled a muscle trying to get it out. I'm replacing so I don't even care if it gets damaged. Just can't do it no matter which way I try.
Anyone know if the 2010’s are any different? I pried down the bottom collar and pull as I might it won’t come... I also tried the adjustable wrench and hammer tap off and it won’t budge... any other tips?
that's really funny because you spent the better part of a whole minute telling everyone how to do it...... and hitting it underneath with a hammer when you are off to the side guarantees you don't smack yourself in the face....... PLUS...... I spent 5 minutes trying to do it YOUR way, and it was a no go on MY Jeep..... maybe your knob has been removed before, IDK, just wasn't happening with mine.
Sorry you couldn't get it to work. I bought my Jeep with fresh off the dealer lot, and I can assure you I was the firsrt to remove that knob. I've removed it several times since then as well... I'm glad you got yours off okay... Oh.. and it's not MY way... is the Jeep Factory Service Manual way... "Slide the shift lever back towards the seat and pull the shift knob in an upward motion with a "quick" snap to remove."
Yours came off too easily. I would say it’s been off before. I am strong strong and I couldn’t move ours. I even stood up with the top off and pulled and it got no where. I will be buying a strap wrench or a piece of 2x4 to beat it with
Well ... I called it a "transfer case shifter knob" in the first 10 seconds of the video, and in the description refer to it as a "transfer case shifter knob". That, is actually what it's called. Try finding a "transfer case knob" that doesn't have the word "shift" or "shifter" in it. So I will argue my terminology is correct. It's the knob on the shifter for the transfer case. Btw... loved you in Fight Club.
Put a small flathead screwdriver in the crack between the black and silver parts. Twist the screwdriver to pop it free. Then gently pry up the 4 plastic tabs. Pull it off gently with only one hand.
And what crazy is the amount of other video where people are using wenches and pry bars to get them off, they also say things like it the only way to get them off or you can’t save them. This video here showed them 😂😂

YOUR METHOD WORKED!!! thanks!! After the knob was off changing the light under the shift indicator was easy!! You Rock!!

Worked for me, after using my dremmel on it trying to relieve pressure on it...It's all about the angle, and leverage...Thanks...!
Guess you need a LOT more upper body strength than I have because the darn things wouldn't even budge!
Thanks for the info. I guess I’m going to need another bowl of Wheaties!! I tried for an hour yesterday. Still won’t come off.
I don’t care how strong you are. It’s all about the twisting back and forth as you pull...
I was about to use heavy tools and destroy the knob....but this comment saved my life and of my jeep LOL
I found this to be false. This knob had zero side to side twist movements. It took a straight had pull, and, POP! Off she came

100% couldn't get mine till twisted alot then came right off
It works!! 10 minutes to set up, remove and install new knob. Thanks for the video.
I’ve had the toughest of men try to get this off. It won’t come off. Unbelievable!!!
Thanks brotha the leg thing did the trick

It’s not hard it just pops apart once that shifter he just removed is done it’s the hardest part.
Great video. I got it off with no major problem.
Thank you for this quick save.
Just wanted to say, Thank you Sir!!!
Is the shift knob the same way?
Thanks for showing me this
Worked perfectly 👍👍
Worked on second pull! Thanks!
I used a oil filter strap to remove the knob.
PERFECT !! Thank You ...... it worked PERFECT !
What stereo upgrade brand is that?
thank you
Dirty-minded comments about the part where I talk about when people "come down here and they start tugging on it..." coming in 3....2....1....
Joe Stacks haha. When I was editing this, I was like...there is no way this is going unnoticed.
o3djeeps [ OVERCLOCK3D Jeeps ] LMAO!!!!!!!
Check out the AJT Design shifter knobs. Very cool mod.
Good video and you made me laugh!
Can you link that dash display?

I'm already sweating trying to pull that thing

How did you manage in the end? 2010's appear to be different. Nothing is working for me so far.
Its the twist while pulling is the secret..
It won’t budge
rag around transfer case lever, adjustable wrench around rag, hit upward with 18 oz. hammer, it's off in 3 seconds......
kopperhed lol...you just added three times the complexity and three times the time...

sorry ....my mistake....... you didn't actually remove the knob until 2 MINUTES into your video.......
almost forgot.... LOL !

What is that stereo unit you have in there?

It does not work and is not easy
Hasn't worked for me
Transfer case knob not shift knob... Practically you’re right

I wish I watched this. I almost knocked myself out
2018 JK. It just won’t come off. No matter what.
Mine either
Convinced mine is welded on
Symbol on the forehead 😂😂😂
My forehead thanks you
Hahaha!
How do u take off the other one
Shouldn't need to unless you're replacing it. Probably the same way.
