I live in the United States. I started as an order puller when I was 17 years old. A couple of years later I got a job as a forklift driver. I went back to school at a community college at the age of 28. I got an associates degree in logistics and supply chain management. Once I got my degree I worked as a customer service rep/order processor. I recently just got a job as an assistant logistics manager, making 20k MORE per year than my previous position!
My suggestion: start somewhere in this industry. (Order puller, inbound/outbound, forklift, dock worker, etc..). Get an associates in business/logistics/supply chain. Find a better paying job. Then work on your bachelors online while working full-time. Then when you get your bachelor's, try to move up!
Yes.. it's a grind. But it's worth it!
Great to hear your story and well done! Yes, start somewhere...........and move up.
Thank you

Getting a Job in Supply Chain and Logistics. Please do share your own tips below! Let's help those who are looking.
Hey! Love the content of the channel. I'm very interested in jobs that could potentially become a remote position in the supply chain area. Could you make a vid on that?
That's an interesting area. So many Supply Chain jobs became work from home in the last few years. Particularly roles like planning.
thanks for the video sir, iam new to this. industry hope i can go far with this to make my future better
Best of luck!
Hi Rob, nice video. Would you consider doing a video on tips to get a job in Australia specifically. Perhaps naming the courses or networking events.
Sure. I might get one of the leading Industry Associations and a recruiter involved in that.
Looking fwd to it.
This is excellent. I am australian so even more helpful. I want to get into an admin related role in the logistics supply chain industry. There are entry level roles but even they are hard to get into. I would like to start at the bottom in the meantime like you suggested, although most warehouseing roles require heavy lifting and as a small female thats me out straight away ! Im not sure how else i could get my foot in the door though?
There are many warehousing roles, such as order picking that do not involve heavy lifting.
Thank you for the video :-)
My pleasure!
Thank you for your valuable advices mr Rob!!!! Probably you can also make a topic on how to get first internship in logistics branch? Because I am 19 years old young specialist, who study 2nd course logistics of procurement and distribution in Poland. I have motivation to find it, but I can not do that😞. I study really good (average point 4.95/5 in University), know at least 4 different languages, have attractive cv and always write motivation lists to companies I apply in. But the problem is that I have no result. If it is possible, can you advice me something in comments or make a video about that problem. Again, thank you for your great videos!
Just be persistent and don’t take rejection personally. Keep at it!
Hello Sir. I follow your channel for the great content. Can you do a video on supply chain consulting challenges and tips?
I'm not sure that really fits with our content strategy, but let me think about it.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hello, and thank you very much for the advice. I have a question regarding the industry as we're sort of / kind of coming out of the pandemic. As of today, how impacted is the logistics and supply chain industry by the pandemic for someone, like me, who's looking to get into this field on the side? I have a current job transcribing audio interviews in various industries, and supply chain and logistics has come up a lot, which made me interested in the first place. Will I encounter difficulty in getting my foot in the door in this current time?
I think the Pandemic has thrown the spotlight on Supply Chain in a very positive way. It's now getting a lot more attention and remains a great long term career.
Also please consider doing a video on soft skills required to enter the field. Like the importance of excel or sap or cargo wise. I am a former Chef currently in my first warehouse job and I ve come to realise the importance of excel. And as a chef I barely used excel. So time to upskill. Please suggest more short soft skills. Thanks and again, great work.
Great idea. I might get some of my team together on a group video........
Excel is easy-mainly learn WMS.
What made you leave the cooking industry?

Hi Rob. Thank you for the video. I would be graduating soon with MSc in SCM and PM from University of Wollongong sydney campus. I have got 4 years of experience in customer facing role of supply chain . Could you please let me know what are the hot skills for a supply chain graduate in australia ?
I would suggest data modelling and dynamic forecasting.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello...thank you for the video that's really amazing. Great appreciation. I would like to know whether having banking experience in international trading and master's degree will be suitable to switch the career to supply chain ?. Your reply means a lot to me.thanks again.
It will help, but I would add some Supply Chain related education if you can. Even some short courses.
Hi sir, thanks for sharing this video. I was one of those jobseeker who struggle with unemployment, life, jobs, etc. I used to be unemployed for quite some time. I came from a Science background(Biology). In my country, jobs for science graduate are not that many (but the graduates are getting more & more), even if there is, it requires experience to apply. Then i work for odd jobs here & there, as cashier, barista, factory operator, etc. I can't afford to restart my education background to get another costly degree. Its really frustrating. After applying to so many jobs & industries, luckily, i got a logistics related job. Its like a lifesaving moment for me when so many industries rejected me, but the Supply Chain industry accepted me. Now, its been years working & i plan to get a CMILT qualification. Btw I just realized that the CEO of the company that I work, was of Science background(Neurobiology). He is Frank Appel. I really want to be like him 1 day. Sorry for the long writing haha
Best of luck to you!
How did you step into the door of supply chain. Do you think it is a good idea to start as a warehouse operator picker and packer, if there is no other choice ?
Hey! Can I ask what is the starting position did you get? I am looking to get started also. Thank you

Rob, what i meant by hot skills for example - Sales force is for CRM , SAP ERP SAP S& D and other facets of SAP are a part of supply chain. For australia at the moment for 2021-2022 which skills recruiters are looking in the candidates profile for a supply chain graduate

Hello , i am one of the those who really like your videos and watching them , thank you for the professional explanations, BUT as i am working for NGO which is non profit organization, do you have any videos in this regards.
An NGO Supply Chain and Logistics operates in just the same way. With a focus on maintaining good service and reducing costs.
As always very precisely explained.
But Sir, only 1 question. Networking is no doubt one of the strongest links in a Job Hunt.
But how not be presented as a job beggar, how do preserve self-respect? As most people treat it as doing an obligatory favor for job seekers.
Networking is not about self promotion. It's just about meeting people. And maybe casually mention the type of job you are looking for. Maybe ask for some advice?
What's a good leap from scheduling and planning in an unrelated industry? I manage both resource and tasks to meet deadlines for an end to end process. I'm already in a senior position though my salary is low - around 28k. Can I jump in sideways or will I still have to start at the bottom?
Generally you should be able to jump 'sideways' to a different industry. Many do.
I'm starting up a trucking company. Who do I speak with within a company to haul their goods ?

Thank you very much for your suggestions. but for a experienced logistics manager with more than 10 years of experience in field of Logistics and Supply chain in Iran, unfortunately we have not a wide range of companies who know about the importance of knowledge and experience in this field. and when your knowledge and experience pushes you( to be an immigrant to other countries) to know more and make more values for the world, unfortunately a Stop Sign comes up and say, NO, You Are IRANIAN- you can not Enter, We do not supply you to have Working VISA. for more than 4 years I tried to change my region and after more than 100 application I have sent with cover letters, there is no acceptance for the first online interview.

Hi Rob. I have been binge watching your videos. Great content! I have been in supply chain for about 10 years and am looking for advancement. I agree with everything you mentioned, except a networking networking in my experience, is the biggest waste of time. There’s absolutely no guarantee that you will ever get results in my personal anecdotal experience networking has been a large expenditure of energy with little to no results. Think of it this way if you’re not qualified, no matter how good your networking is, you’re not going to get the position. Instead, focus on qualifications certifications experience, then whether you have network power or not, you are a strong candidate.
I would agree, that if you are not qualified, networking may not be as useful. But if you are not qualified for a role, any job hunting strategy will be tougher. I still maintain, that networking is one of the most powerful ways to secure a job. At least in the countries I have worked in. UK, Australia.
Where in Canada is the best place to get a job in Supply chain? I am looking into schools there to do a 1 years supply chain management program and I would also like to live there afterwards

Very hard to advise with a detailed knowledge of each University, the current programs, and how they are regarded by industry. I would pick the course and University that 'feels' right for you. What's in the program, the location, all of it. Re Bachelor v Masters? Most would do Bachelor first, get some experience and then do Masters. I am going to college for a 4 year business admin degree. I am currently debating on focusing on supply chain management.
In America I’ve discovered the software SAP Materials management is huge for this line of work. It has given me the impression though that this line of work will be a lot of screen time doing data entry in the SAP software system.
Is this true for entry level positions?
After promotion to a supply chain manager, in general how much do you think they spend in the SAP software? Or whatever software it would be.
It seems like an exiting career in that you are involved in a wide aspect of the business.
Thanks for your time!
I think most 'management' jobs involve a lot of screen time these days. It's a large part of how we communicate and monitor the business. Don't overthink entry level positions though. Things and your interests will change during your career. Getting started is the key. (SAP is only one of the popular systems used)
#1 go to school and get a certificate or degree on supply chain.
Yep, that certainly helps. But some ground floor experience will help too
I really don't understand why everyone sees influence over talent. Many talented people might not have influence or network. I believe they should be given a chance to prove themselves but they end up getting an automated email from the company.
Yes, it's really tough isn't it? I have to say when I advertise a position, 90% of the applicants don't meet the clear criteria as advertised. that can be a bit frustrating for the employer too. But I think common courtesy requires a decent reply! (not an automated one). Regarding talent / influence / network, I still maintain that networking is really important. It's about making 'connections' in the industry, not really influence.
@@supplychainsecrets I agreee on networking, but a lot of people are really not willing to help, they would not reply as people don't have any connections. I have 900+ connections in linkedIn still people would not reply to a post when I say I need a job. Some of them are international though.

@@supplychainsecrets ok thanks
NOW IT IS ALL ABOUT CONNECTIONS, QUALIFICATIONS DOES NOT COUNT EVEN IN LARGE ENTERPRISES AND FIRMS, this is the fact and reality.
I would say that qualifications help you get the interview and get shortlisted. And relevant experience of course. But networking helps you find out about jobs before they are even advertised.
I m MBA in supply chain form India..can I get job in Canada or Australia?
Thanks rob
You really need to get professional Visa advice. It's hard. Please understand there are thousands of locals in those countries already with the same qualification.
I want to talk with u if u can?
Feel free to reach out via LinkedIn. Though I can't help with finding jobs, sorry. I get a lot of requests for that!
And need a little bit luck:)
Very true!
You forget references.
I'm a bit 50/50 about references. Any references that a Candidate provides, will be good ones. I tend to use my own network to find other references...
Thanks
hope it helped......
