    Perpetual Change is my favorite song off of 'The Yes Album.' It's so beautiful and melodic, but soooo advanced musically. The middle part where were they pan into 1 ear is so incredibly interesting. Musically speaking, the riff they are playing is in 7/8 and they fade that into 1 ear..... all the while, they bring back the introduction riff which is in 7/4 into the opposite ear. The 2 riffs layer over the top of each other beautifully - AND they were able to replicate this live. Absolutely amazing!

      The faster section which pans to the left channel is indeed 7/8. The new section comes in on the right in what I count as a cycle of 14 beats in quarter time subdivided one bar of 6 and one of 8. The latter has also been interpreted as 3/4 with a downbeat on the 15th beat, an extra beat which I don't hear. Even more impressive on Yessongs and House of Blues.

      To each his own I suppose, but Starship trooper seems to me to the best, song, one thing, however , the whole Album is one of the best Prog rock ever...

      @JohnBrooking4 Рік тому +3

      I prefer to count that slow part as 7/2. Give the half note the beat, and the phrase starts over again every 7 half-note beats, 3+4. But at a certain point it’s just a matter of interpretation and preference.

      I went to see Yes about 10 years ago, with Jon Davidson singing. I loved this album, growing up, but a lot of the magic went, with my hearing. So far, through the show, I was just watching a bunch of old men relive their glory years, when that middle section hit. That's when the magic struck me. The pity was that they were only played two more albums.

    Growing up, I listened to a lot of Yes, especially those early albums. Yes has always been in my top five bands, but over the years, I've realized just how great they are, especially compaing them to what's come out in the last 20+ years. For playing and song-writing skills, they're second to none. All are virtuosos with amazingly adept skill at composing brilliant musical works of art. Bravsisimo

    So I was 14 in 1971 and bought this album on cassette tape and played it on my Bell and Howell stereo. That was 51 yrs ago and YES has been my favorite band ever since. Enjoy your reviews and seeing young people enjoy this timeless music. “In the Presence” from Magnification would be a nice addition to your YES reviews.

    When I purchased my first stereo hifi turntable (in 1971) the first record I played on it was The Yes Album. Since then, whenever I have bought a new turntable, or hi fi system, or CD player, the first thing that has to be played is The Yes Album. Am I strange? The tradition has lasted 51 years and will continue as this album changed my life. Love it! NicknLex, have you reacted to 'I've seen all good people ' yet off this album? If you have I've missed it, if not you must do it. Thanks for a great reaction as always xx

    The problem with the "spotify" world is that if you just download the latest song from an artist you will miss out on the deep cuts or songs that are growers (need multiple listens). Thats why albums were so good. You put a side on and listened to the whole thing. Back in the 70s my friends talked about our favorite albums, not just songs from an artist.

    I had to laugh when you paused it just before the middle and mentioned that it was not as chaotic as some of their songs. I was like “no, you just haven’t HEARD the chaotic part yet!”
    My math brain is fascinated by that middle part. The initial guitar part is a fast 7/8, then the theme that is re-introduced from the beginning is a slow 7/2 (I would call it), so they get out of sync after a few 7/8 measures and come back into sync every 4 of those measures. Then the third voice that comes in last just sounds completely random, yet they ultimately bring it all together. That they can play it without getting confused, especially live, is a testament to what excellent musicians they are! I remember one time in college, a friend of mine and I tried to sing those two parts together, and failed miserably. (Yes, math rock fan, guilty as charged.)

    The fading to one ear and introducing something new in the other comes a bit from the fact that this was still the early days of stereo and producers liked to play with it creatively. Some modern listeners find it corny but at the time it was revolutionary. This was a fun listen. 🎉❤

    • @kevinlakeman5043
      @kevinlakeman5043 Рік тому +1

      I've never met anyone, in the 70's or among 'modern listeners' who find any of this 'corny'. Is that really the word for it? What company are you keeping? Sounds like they're on the dim side, or just have little concept of time and context for this music.

    Hi Guys, hysterical opening. We all had a feeling of Deja' Vu....so funny. Love "The Yes Album". It was the 1st album of theirs I bought....It's long overdue to listen to tracks from the live album "Yessongs" which is now remastered....Tracks "Long Distant Runaround / The Fish", with Chris Squires incredible bass solo to blow you away. It's one track !! & " Excerpts from The Six Wives of Henry VIII " with the amazing Rick Wakeman solo. These two need to be heard to be believed. Considering this was in 1973 it still sounds as incredible now. I hope it wont be too long before you say "Yes". 🤪Byeee Jim X

    Okay, I know everybody loves Rick Wakeman, and rightly so…but Tony Kaye sure goes out with a bang here, doesn't he?
    (And of course, he comes back later.)
    Love that Nick's blooper took you both by surprise :). Happy New Year!

    Hopefully you can watch other documentaries/interviews with Yes. Jon A came up with a lot of the lyrics and would sing the music he wanted to other members which is amazing having that in your head when you don't read music. Shows the technical knowledge isn't the end all and be all of things. Still, being able to read music was helpful to me when I joined a choir that didn't require it. It's all good. I've seen them open several concerts with "Perpetual Change," inc. with current singer Jon Davison when he first joined the band.

    Perpetual Change is quite an amazing tune and, for an extended experience, listen to the live version off of Yessongs which features a Bill Bruford drum solo - I believe it is the only song on the album that has Bruford playing on it. This was the tour where Bruford left and White took over. I think the live version of this song shows the band as the well oiled machine they were as a performing band. Also, Nick mentioned George Benson when how begins playing the octaves; to hear a direct influence on Howe, listen to the great Wes Montgomery who brought that technique into "popularity." Great stuff all the way around.

    There was a scene in Shawshank Redemption where Andy put on these female Italian opera singers over the prison loudspeakers. The prisoners all stopped in their tracks to listen. Red says, "I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing something so beautiful that it can't be expressed in words..." This is exactly how I feel about Jon Anderson. I have no idea what he's singing about but it sure does sound nice, yes?

    Hola, muy feliz 2023!!!
    Chicos, me encanta ver como reaccionan (especialmente a Yes), pero les aseguro que si escuchan la versión del disco Yessongs no lo van a poder creer. Lo mismo para Yours is no disgrace, esas versiones en vivo son infinitamente superiores a las de estudio. Hagan la prueba, reaccionen a esos lives que no se van a arrepentir.

    Can’t believe you guys haven’t heard this! I love this album and this is one of my favorite songs from it. If you want to hear some amazing guitar work listen to The Clap. Can we please do some more Todd Rundgren? You need to do some of his more “proggy” stuff. Anything off of Initiation or Ra by Utopia.

    The YES album is a great first YES record to get into the band. Every song is a golden nugget. Easy to digest. Doesn't require the disciplined ear of the more progressive stuff.

    Yeah, the Yessongs version is worth a listen. In fact, I think you've done all the relevant studio versions, so it's definitely time to do the whole of Yessongs. Perhaps some of the poise and perfection of the studio versions are lost, but the energy and drive are phenomenal, maybe down to Alan White who is drumming on original Bill Bruford tracks (except for Long Distance Runaround, The Fish and Perpetual Change).

    I recall a story told by Chris Squire of one night talking to the first black man he had ever met in his life, who was the guitar player for some band who he had watched rehearsing and didn't think much of. It turned out this band was replacing the band he thought Yes was opening for. While in the first song of his set, he realized the audience included members of the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Who and Eric Clapton...all his music heroes...only to learn later they were all there for that black man, Jimi Hendrix.
