What's you favourite way to treat pianos? I find distortion is a great way to get pianos heard as an EQ alternative, how about you?
I would definitely say distorting it with a bit of a 670 fairchild compression before the distortion
This is like having a music production tutor for free. Thank you very much Sara. You are a blessing. I love your calm clear voice also.
You're so welcome!
Thank you so much for these EQ-videos, Sara! You break the topic down in such a clear way and the "why" perspective is invaluable. 😊
You are so welcome!
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing can you do video how to mix song Just Piano and Vocal song with Lead Vocal and BGV Vocal
Well I know what I’m doing for the next hour or so! These videos are great. Also, if anyone is thinking of buying Sara’s masterclass, just do it. Totally worth it! I have learned so much about work flow! Keep up the great work Sara!
Yay! Thank you!
Thanks Sara. Really helpful for me as piano is always a key part of my mixes. Your videos are getting even better. Just the right balance of theory, principles and practice.
Happy to hear that! Thank you
Sara you are amazing. your approach to explaining things is so refreshing
Thank you so much!
Boosting 1k on a piano: I didn't ever dare until now, but this was eye-opening - again. Thanks!
Excellent!
More stuff to use in our actual remake of an old song, that needs better mixing! Thank you!
Really enjoy your videos, concise and clearly explained .
Once again, an excellent video. Thanks so much Sara.
You are so welcome!
This series has helped me understand alot about eq. Thank you Sara
I’m so pleased!
Immensely helpful stuff Sara... Really looking forward for future releases... 🤓 You are the best..!!!

Thanks so much Sara! Your timing is perfect. Recording grand piano the past few days with a multi mike setup.
Ooh nice!
Thank you, Sara! Your vids are gold! 😎🤙
Glad you like them!
These courses are pure gold. I'm looking this How to... series together with Mixing Rock Masterclass, complement each other nicely.
Great to hear!
Thank you Sara, hell of a subject to take on, so helpful though as always. Keep doing it. Take care. ❤
Thank you! You too!
Great video, subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
Great video. The tip for listening to the other instruments around the one you’ve applied eq to to see if that sound changes is gold. Literally ever thought of that, even though it’s quite obvious now I think about it. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Sara.
You are so welcome!
Very helpful Sara
I'm so glad!
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Although I use Cubase but your video is helpful for me and every one.I am speaking from Bangladesh.
I bloody love you lady. I've watched and applied so much of your teaching and it's helped me MASSIVELY. I just wanted to send you a virtual hug Nd say THAK YOU SO SO MUCH. You are my fav
Wow, thank you!
Best teaching on EQ’ing an instrument in a dense mix I’ve seen/heard to date. You have a fantastic teaching style! Thanks for the video!
Bought your deep dive rock course based on this video! Looking forward to it!
Wow, thanks!
Thanks so much for this. Really useful. I do mainly piano stuff and find this really hard to get right - especially across different speaker systems. I either get mud or harshness, but will focus on the frequency ranges you suggest.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent workshop. I would love to see a similar one on how to eq/compress guitars when you’re trying to get an Americana or alt country sort of mix. (Ryan Adams, Son Volt, Jason Isbell etc). These artists are fairly guitar forward, but not super distorted or heavy and I struggle with making them sound full, while not veering into heavy rock land.
Great suggestion!
Compressing and eqing piano is honestly my biggest issue left lol
Prof Sarah is back, hurray 🎉🎉🎉
Indeed I am!
I put mid frequency instruments to a bus and side chain the vocal to the Focusrite Reveal plugin which is a frequency dependent Ducker and you control ducking with percent. Works like a hot damn. I like using sateration on almost all mid range instruments I want to stick out. I've got too many saturators now it's hard to choose. Whoops!
Great tip!
I like to take them on days out and a nice meal. Nice vid. Thanks
😃 Thanks
I really appreciate these series of videos you've been making. Piano is my main instrument, having played for over 30 yrs now and yet I find it the trickiest to mix. I think that's because it's both melodic, percussive and also fills the entire frequency spectrum. Controlling all those spikes and resonances is always a challenge. Would be interested to know if you typically use additional processing on Pianos, such as compression or saturation? Or whether you tend to keep it natural. Thanks again!
After EQ I tend to use gentle compression using an optical compressor, usually an LA2A plugin, then go from there. Distortion does a good job of helping the ear latch on to it, so I use that in busier mixes or when trying to mix it with guitars and synths.
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing Thank you so much!
Is that your nails on the keys or an acoustic guitar I’m hearing or the acoustics of the electric?
great video! Question:
You touch briefly on the 3-5k range being where the vocals are. Because of this, I'm always timid about boosting other instruments in this range, because I'm afraid of masking with the presence range of the vocal. Any advice for reconciling this?
My current go-to method is dynamic eq. If a guitar/piano/synth has any kind of presence boosting in 3-5k, I put in a gentle dynamic eq cut in that range to trigger when the vocal comes in. Any other tips or principles to address this? Many thanks!
What I do, is sidechain with vcls so that when I need it, the piano leave space to my vcls, and when vcls are not there, the piano has its presence.
@@guglielmonigro that's what I mean. I use a sidechain into a dynamic eq
The side chaining method is a good one, another is to boost only the sides using mid-side EQ on a stereo piano, dip the mid a dB or two to make room for the vocal. If it's mono, I tend to pan away from centre and that seems to work for me.
@@SaraCarterSimplyMixing thank you kindly for the reply! Lately I've been doing mono checks as I mix, so that I know the mix is under control in mono, but the dynamic eq method seems to hold up better in mono because, honestly, all the advanced techniques with comb filtering and delay to work the sides in stereo to keep them happy in mono...a little above my pay grade lol.
Perhaps in a future video you can talk about more advanced techniques in stereo-mono compatibility? I've always wanted to wrap my head around that.
@@YourFavouriteColor yes, Mid/side mixing is always a great theme.
I really like the vibe of this song. Who is the artist and what is the song title? Thanks.
The links are in the description for both tracks used. Are you referring to the modern classical track or the rock track?
Getting the piano to fit with the instrumentation isn't to bad until the vocal stomps all over it.
When I play live I hate playing with pianos more than humbuckered rhythm guitarists and my bass disappears at times.
In recordings I just high-pass like a guitar and remove mud.
Interesting, I tend to add a mid boost to bass in the same zone as the piano but offset the frequencies if masking occurs.
Not sure why this ended up on my recommended feed, added to the playlist nonetheless, maybe it's the british accent.
Hope you like it :)
I am not confident that there will be an election.
Just record the instrument correctly and you won't NEEED "EQ".

Way too much talking for a short tutorial video. No flow in delivery and long drawn out tangents of discussion. If it’s a tutorial keep it concise and on point for the title. We aren’t clicking this for philosophies on piano mixing
