I am so emotionally invested in BCDG! I live in the city; never lived on a farm or managed a ranch. I'm not even sure how I got here, but I know more about goats than anyone I know and can probably be hired on the spot because I know all your systems and procedures... I love you, BCDG!! hahahah :)
The pig palace looks nice. It’s unbelievable how you guys milk and feed all the animals in an hour. Team work makes the dreams work.

I’ve never understood how some people feel the need to bash others for doing what works best for them. Every farm has its own needs and ways of doing things. You will always have change.
Dink has come so far. It’s so wonderful to see her go from a happy healthy baby to a frozen kid to a happy healthy kid again. Perhaps she maybe large enough to breed come fall. What a journey that will be.
Safe travels Derek, remember that nothing is more important than making it back home to your beautiful wife and kids.

Great video! It was great to see the whole family together again on video. I was missing Derek and all the other animals. BE STILL MY HEART - got to see Lucky and the other bucks...was really missing them too. Happy to see you comment to someone else that Derek would be documenting his travel and delivery of the babies. Derek: seems all is under control & the goats/kids are doing fine. The pigs seem to be quite happy with their new palace. BTW it looks as if Lydi is going to end up being a dominant type doe as she is already overseeing her herd as the feed.

Oh wow! Too funny, our oldest (now 24) ran a district cc meet and about a 1/4 of the way into race, lost one show and ran rest without it! And still ran excellently 😃

You can water glass eggs to preserve them to eat in the winter when the hens aren't laying. Search water glassing eggs on you tube for a " How to". Its really easy.
I totally enjoyed this! I see now just how everything is done. Conveniency is what it’s all about, works great! What I find pretty amazing is...3 people can get all this done with no worries. I really doubt too many goat farms have it this down pat. Or, the farm hires more people. I just feel you all have beat the system so to speak. Well done y’all!!

I 💖 how even though yal have an established herd yal are still always trying to figure out ways to make things easier & smoother! Alot of channels once they get to a point they dont make many changes & I always see ways that would make it easier for em.

Sunkin garden beds, not raised. Use the dirt you dig out to make the berms (preferably on contour). Fill them with mulch, or goat pen clean out. If you can try to direct your house or shed rain run off into the bed for water. You'll be much happier.

That would help, in normal years. But, please bear in mind that the total average precipitation for Tucson is just over 13 inches a year. (I couldn't get good info for Benson.) In 2020, they got just 4.2 inches. Very hard to sustain any garden on that runoff, not to mention the record breaking heat. Another thing to bear in mind is just how hard the soil can be, especially if they have caliche. Digging the lowered beds might not be feasible... (There is a reason that there aren't many basements in AZ.)
@@melissajarvis4829 I did it for 10+ years in Las Vegas. (I was always so jealous of how much water you all got in AZ.) There's lots of other water farming tricks and techniques you can apply too; ollas, wicking beds, choosing desert variety perennial edibles, and medicinals, planting heavily in the fall/winter/spring, utilizing the north side of your home and trees, I already mentioned heavy mulching above. Farm the water first, you'll find a way.
@@manorton6709 Yes. Those things all help. I do want to point out that 2020 saw brutal, record breaking heat in AZ, not just drought. (They weren't exaggerating.)
I'm not sure why they didn't do more of a fall/winter garden this year. Probably because their focus right now is still on animal infrastructure? But, you're right, with a little more planning, funds, and effort, they can work on adding some of what you mentioned in, as well. (Ex: add gutters on the pig palace that drain into a rain barrel. I'm not sure if they are already using their grey water, but that would be a good start, too, if not.)
Also, in case you didn't know, they have experimented with more native crops. In 2019? they grew amaranth. I think they may have mentioned Native Seed. (If not, someone in their comments may have told me.) It is an organization based in Tucson that makes seeds available for sale that are either native or more adapted to the Southwest.
Yes, I know I'm water spoiled, comparative to some places. I'm in Phoenix, on a flood irrigated lot... But, it's all relative. I watch a lot of other southern homesteaders in North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Arkansas (and Al in New Hampshire and a few others in the N East). Talk about water spoiled! Streams, springs and swamps! Almost daily rain... Yeah. Water envy! But, they get humidity, too. Yuk...
@@manorton6709 I have some questions: Do you have some recommended sources for more info on ollas? I researched ollas a couple of years ago, including some dyi ones, but they didn't really seem doable. And the real ones are so expensive. Do they work for larger plots? To me, they seemed expensive, but ideal for using with only individual plants with high water needs.
By wicking bed, are you referring to an inground system? Or, raised bed or even container style? I've had several different commercial container ones, with varying successes.
